Duh! Think about it--they obviously could've made it that way. But, if they did, and there were other customers in the bank, he'd be trapped in there with them until the cops arrived. Do you think you could possibly create a more likely hostage situation?

Ok, let me reform my statement. How about this: super high tech motion sensers determine if there are any people in the store other than the robber. If there are none then it locks.

Think about safety (and liability). A sensor that could determine if there was anyone else anywhere else in the customer area (including little people or children) would be very expensive. Second an accomplice would defeat it. Third, if it became known that that might happen, people might start dragging innocent people in with them to prevent it from arming. Accidental triggering, potential fires, lawsuits--completely impractical.

Yeah, I know it would be expensive. My thought was more of a hypothetical "it would be cool" thought; like it would be cool if we all had one million dollar Vipers. And the sensors don't have to be for just one robber. If it sees more than one person with guns it wouldn't count those as hostages. I understand the third point. It was just an idea...
