I love the part where Butch is trying to talk to the bandidos in Spanish.

When Butch tries to say "Leave the money and go away" ("Dejar el dinero y se van"), what he actually says is "Dejen el dinero y vayanese" (leave and the money will go). Then the confused Mexican replies "Que dejemos el dinero nos vayamos?" ( "We leave, and the money will go with us?).

Then Butch tells them in Spanish "We don't need the money", to which the Mexican replies "We don't need it either!"

Funny as hell.

My favorite line in the movie. Redford's face is priceless.

Yeah, and Strother Martin is a great metaphor for the turning point, because he has the kind of job and easy going manner that they could picture themselves becoming as they grow old. But then they see him get killed by people doing the very same thing they used to do, except the bandidos are indifferent about using lethal force. Then Butch and Sundance have to use lethal force to stop the bandidos. Definitely a wake up call. The chase scene with the distant torches also foreshadows a lot.

@korgri - Exactly. The brilliance of this film is that it's actually a profound tragedy beautifully cloaked in a sugary comedy. The two main characters are doomed from the start, and all they can do is march inevitably toward their ultimate fate, which they can see coming toward them all the while.

@MrMytvc15 Yeah, and you only learn that their good fellowship and joking is just a kind of gallows humor that loses it's edge once Etta (their audience) leaves. They regain it briefly only right before they actually die. I always wondered what it was that mollified Harvey Logan after he recovered from being kicked in the balls. I mean, Butch only punched him once really hard once Harvey was 'immobilized'. That was enough to prevent Harvey from reversing the stunt and killing Butch in his sleep?

great fuckin edit. one of the heaviest moments in the movie is when Butch realizes that he's killed someone, for him that's the end of the road, and Newman nailed it.

great edit, better timed for dumping the smith jones scene where they help strother load up the mules.

@korgri - Thanks. I had to cut the sequence down to below ten minutes for Youtube, but I think the scene actually plays a bit better my way anyway. This is my favorite moment of the film because up to this point it's all been fun and games for Butch and Sundance...and us. But having to kill all those men is a real wake up call to them, and reminds them of just how bloody they too will probably end up. Very sad in a way.
