Look at this man act! You just don't see opera singers giving monologues like this anymore! His voice is so heavy and thick! It has edge and hotness! Yet, it has that extension and ping and somehow remains an even, bright tone throughout his range. A fan, I am.
Subjective, of course, but I simply can't warm to his voice - hooty, played with, and overly twanged/brightened to make up for lack of resonance. About as high as he goes without cracking - makes it somewhat exciting, though, seeing if he cracks or not!!
Puh-leeze. I've heard this argument ad naseum. Surely, Placido does not deliver his B4s with the same abandon as his A4s, but they are good B's. He's even delivered fine C5's. Yes, he's not know for a thrilling high resgister, but the man IS a tenor. He is also fearless. He has taught the world with his 129 role repertoire, and the half dozen (and counting) or so operas he's recorded but not performed. So good in French and German, too. Corelli this, De Monaco that, Giacomini etc. Bah!
I didn't say he wasn't/isn't a hard worker, smart, or hadn't had a stunning career. They are observable facts, of course. I'm saying that personally I can't warm to his voice, and explaining the technical reasons why. Have a look at some of the spectral analysis in Miller's books - these show quantitatively the resonance issues I am talking about. However, if you like the guy more than Corelli or whoever, you go for it! I prefer a more 'open', balanced resonant sound (e.g. Pav, Florez).
Great comment. More than assuring his voice is this or that you are talking of your preference and I think this is what we should always say instead of trying to impose our tastes to others. I really like Placido's voice, but I would never say he is the best just because I like him the most.

¿Y qué pasó con la "mezzo voce" de "me tradia" (3:50-3:57)? ¡Patético!

There are three tenors who sing this aria very best of all Carlo Bergonzi, Jose Carreras and Placido Domingo.

I love him. For me, he is the best opera singer ever.
