You can't video tape in a controlled or restricted area, but the gate is in sight of the public and a gate guard has no say so of what a civilian does outside of its exclusive or concurrent juristiction. However if you are in the military they can control every aspect of your life, and if your entire chain of command is filled with cowardly douches they will try.

Yeah Filming Any kind of Military Gate Ops are considered A threat to National Security... We Give the people an oportunity to Erase the tape, or pictures, Or we confiscate the stuff.. But we are Basically Military police too.. They might run things different in Annapolis..We don't confiscate alot though, Cuz people just don't know that they can't have video or pics.. At Air Force bases, on the flight line, there is a red line that non authorized people must not cross, and they've got their guards (don't remember what they called them) who just LIVE for the moment somebody crosses the line. They pull out all the stops and make it extrememly embarrassing/demeaning for the perpetrator, I'm talking legs spread, face down, getting yelled at with a weapon aimed in the general direction.
