Though Beverly Sills was an adorable Rossina with a voice of an indisputable beauty, I remain with Cecilia Bartoli, due to the incomparable coloratura of her voice, her interpretive force and her look, which they transmit an indescribable emotion capable of perforating even the most insensitive of the hearts.
This is so lovely. Thanks to whomever is responsible for posting it. What a wonderful memory. I started to enjoy opera because of Ms. Sills and her appearances on t.v. talk shows in the 1970s. She was a great New Yorker and will be missed so very much. But what a life - truly a life well-lived. She gave so much to us.
A true vocal technician, she embodied the very meaning of being a true professional in every sense and will be deeply missed throughout the music world. There will never be another like her.
She is not supposed to be Callas. Two totally different voices! Callas is Callas, ans Sills is Sills! She sounded so good when she retired, and even better for someone who had cancer. GIVE HER A BREAK! She is FAB!!!
My God, even though she is retired in this video she sounds so good. She amazes me every single time, and I will forever love her voice, beauty, and wonderful acting skills!
I think the quality her instrument due to whatever reason began to lessen but only in her sustained phrases. I think she realized this and wanted to go out on top. A little bit wobble began to set in. But she is amazing none the less!!!
of course she'd still sound good, she was only what, 49 maybe 50? Do any of you think she would have sung a lot longer if her children didn't have the problems they had? I wonder...
The length of her career had nothing to do with the disabilities of her children, but rather the roles she chose to sing, such as Queen Elizabeth and Anna Bolena. While hugely successful in these roles, Sills admitted that her intense interpretation and committed to the scores shorten her career at least by 10 years.
With that said, she sacrificed her international career by limiting her engagements only to the brief breaks and holidays Muffy received from school.
There are now three different performances of Sills singing "Una Voce Poco Fa" available for comparison. This new addition of the famous aria, is taken from a 1979 concert performance in Indianapolis.
Sills is in splendid form, even though she retired 12 months later!
Thanks for keeping on. Operatubes subscription list has over 60 members uploading a dozen plus opera videos everyday. It's opera shock and awe. So much good stuff, never enough time.
Forever Beverly!
