I like this performance very much. the images that come to mind of his interpretation: in Lyrical Passages - he produces long lines through the complex changes and subtleties of chopin with the melodic line as if always SUSPENDED in the air...in the fuller passages , it's very robust as if he's DIGGING DEEP into the Earth. I think it's wonderful. Chopin of the World of Dreams and Chopin of the Earthly Drama. But Both tied as one world: Chopin's. A very RARE combination in a performance.

Thanks for posting this. Based on this, Brailowsky was unfairly maligned by some commentators.

This is good Chopin playing and good piano playing. Nice tone. Strong sense of time. Ability to phrase long lines.

In my humble option, the worst thing that could have happened to Brailowsky's reputation was for him to sign a contract with Columbia in the early sixties and record huge chunks of Chopin when he was long past his prime. There are many quite beautiful performances from the thirties and even early forties. It's sad, and not at all uncommon, for people not to know when it's best to hang up the spurs.

I remember in the Fifties when I was studying piano, people didn't regard Brailowsky very highly. He was criticized for being mediocre. Well, it's time for a reevaluation. I just listened to the first movement of the Chopin Sonata and what a stunning performance it is. It what I would call "real" Chopin, alive and spirited, con anima.

Gorgeous performance...Brailowsky was one of the best ones..overall in chopin's interpretations.
