I know exactly what your talking about Shawn. I'm 37, and it's really sad to see all the stores closing that I grew up with. One of my favorite things to do was fishing through the stacks of records and movies to find hidden jems. T'was so much fun. It is so sad that future generations will never get to experience that. Half the fun was the actual trip to the stores and the shopping for my movies and music.
Here's a few of my favorites over the years: Sam Goodies, Galaxy of Sound, Toones "Independent store", Record Town, Wall of Sound, Camelot, Circuit City, Two Guys, The Wall, Waves, Woolworths, Suncoast Video and my favorite place to rent videos was West Coast Video!!
I remember Camelot, Sam Goody, and Suncoast. When a Circuit City opened up in my city, I stopped shopping at these places. MY reason for doing this was because Circuit City sold a majority of their cds at $10.88. Why was I going to pay 20 to 25 bucks for one cd, when I could get it for 11 bucks!
Remember when you used to be able to rent videos from the grocery store? I had a weird dream lately that I was in an old obscure grocery store and I was looking at videos to rent. Very inexplicable. I don't see any grocery stores renting movies anymore though but I do see them selling DVD's on racks everywhere and I'm always wondering who the hell buys DVD's at a grocery store and why they bother carryign them. Oh well.
There was both an FYE and Coconuts near where I currently live that were across the street from each other and they both had similar selections of music and movies. Now the FYE is gone and the Coconuts is still there. I thought it would've been the other way around.
my favorite music and movies store is ameoba music in hollywood, their store is two stories of music, movies, posters and vinyl etc.im so glad their still around.
Going back a way, I remember Licorice Pizza on Wilshire Blvd in West Los Angeles.... And of course now in Ventura there is Salzers.... In this area now, N.C.S.D. there is dook. Just Best Buy and Fry's... FYE is closing at the end of January.
I loved Suncoast and Sam Goody. Never really bought much there. I do remember buying the Special Edition of the first Jurassic Park on DVD for $35 when it was released. Now you can buy the blu-ray trilogy set for $40, lol...
I remember Night Owl Video in Miami Fl. I'd rent movies there with my parents all the time. It was kind of seedy and family owned. They had that porn section in the back I could never go to, but this of course was before Blockbuster. I used to rent NES games there and whenever a new game came out. I'd be excited to rent it. So I'd ask the store owner where is the new Zelda game is? He'd say, we got in, but my son is playing it first. So you'll have to wait a few days. Yes, I shit you not.
i could deepthroat your your cock while licking your balls, you ever seen that trick? anyways, i'd really love for you to jerk off into a dvd box and then pour it into my gaping open asshole as i can spout it back out like a whale's blowhole. i would also like to suck on your toes, maybe dip them in bbq sauce then duck then clean. i'm more than happy to fuck you, your friends, your brothers and neighbors if you'd like or you could lock me up in a basement and waterboard me in your urine. <3

Awesome video! I often get nostalgic about the old video and music stores too. Where I am, we had Suncoast, Camelot, Waves, National Record Mart and Media Play. I spent *so* much time in those places. I really miss the experience of just walking around and finding new things. It was fun to sometimes buy a CD or VHS/DVD just based on the cover art or synopsis on the back! I used to work at Hollywood Video and they definitely had a better selection than Blockbuster, especially horror.
media play was my all time fav, you could find anyyything there. they had the weirdest dvds and tons of good sales. i was bummed when they closed several years ago and FYE took over. FYE closed as well so now there is really just Best Buy around here
I worked at a Wisconsin Media Play during high school 2000 - 2001. Media Play was apart of Musicland which umbrellaed it, Sam Goody and Suncoast. At the time it was essentially Best Buy without the electronics in exchange for a much larger software & video game section, a movie section that dwarfed Best Buy's (they used to have a very minimum movie section), comparable CD section, and a very large book section to boot. We would special order any DVD request and get many rarer DVD releases.
Our discount could be applied to any Musicland store and I remember tracking down a rare DVD tin release of Evil Dead 2 to Suncoast at our mall which became one of my first DVD purchases; 27,074 of 50,000 (just pulled it to check for kicks). Any way, Musicland ended up hitting hard-times, and not a lot of people know this but Best Buy bought Musicland during this period--around 2001. As an insider (part-time working the software/video floor...) I observed this as a conspiracy.
Best Buy bought Musicland to run them, especially their Media Play store, into the ground and eliminate them as competition. All of our prices went up, our massive sections shrunk to or below Best Buy's, and the entire serving niche requests philosophy was buried. Then came the shady Best Buy practices and we were transformed from laid-back easy-going honest Media Play employees to unscrupulous Best Buy crooks when they required us to push things for commission with quotas. I immediately quit.
I love this new series man. I can relate to a few of your choices as well. I loved hollywood video especially because they put their movies in genres which i find easier when looking for my faves. We only have Family video left in my town and I buy from them now instead of rent in case THEY want to close on me too. Sam Goody and Waldenbooks were easily the best places to go in my mall. I don't mind shopping online for things but it WAS nice to be able to actually go out and look.
I remember Applause Video. It was one of the first rental stores I can remember. This is back in the early 80's. It closed around 1988. Then came Blockbuster.
MORE IMPORTANTLY - Thank you for having that amazing "Suburban Commando" poster behind you. This was one I used to always watch in my childhood but completely forgot about. Do you own the DVD?
@DoseOneIsJesus Cool. I acually think its a different blow out video though then the one in florida and new york. I remember reading that a while back.
i love going to the great mom and pop video stores their is a great mom n' pop video store where i live that still sell classic vhs for $5 bucks that i like going too ...what are some of your favorite family owned video store from the past shawn ?
@jamminmusicman I remember going to a family owned video store called Voice of Video. I remember in the 5th grade renting Return of the living dead their.
A few I remember that were all in walking distance were Saturn Video, Take Three Video, Best Video, Bridgeport Video, WestCoast Video, Blockbuster and a video section in the Dominicks grocery store. Seemed like every corner had a video store. All of them are gone now except for the Blockbuster.
I use to love going to Media Play, they had everything. We use also have a huge Hollywood Video that not only rented video, but sold videos, games and cds. I miss them as well. Cool video.
I enjoyed this one a lot! I miss the old independent video stores. We still have a Blockbuster which I'm happy about. My husband worked at a suncoast for a short time ;)
@coolduder On Cue had a ton of music CDs and Cassettes. They also sold books and VHS videos and some other odd things like collectible action figures and stuff like that, if I remember correctly. I don't know if it was a big chain store or a regional thing because I had only been inside the one in a local mall. They closed a long time ago, probably before DVDs were even sold widely in stores. They had predominantly VHS movies. It was a really cool store and was pretty big; like a big FYE store.
@Spottedfeather Minor roles in no-budget films every few months does not qualify as a "job" in my book, that's a hobby. A job allows you to support yourself. I always get a kick out of it when people ask him acting or movie making questions as if he has made it to the big time... the dude is almost 30, lives with his parents and makes youtube videos.
@xdexhumanizex Getting a job and moving out of your parents house when you're creeping up on 30 years old isn't important? That's way more important than discussing failed video/music stores.
@aztr0zombie I have been in a number of way bigger films. You have no clue what you talking about. Im one of the leads in the new danny trejo film Haunted high for syfy. Ive worked hard to do what Ive done.
@coolduder You're right, I don't know you, or what I'm talking about when it comes to your life. I apologize for what I wrote. I went back and read my comments and I came off as a total prick. Good luck to you and I enjoy your DVD updates. YouTube needs less negativity, I'm sorry.
@aztr0zombie STFU troll why are you even here???? you said you always see people asking him questions so that means youre a pathetic, NO LIFE loser who keeps watching videos of someone you hate????? GTFO you beyond dumb prick
@DanRKO815 I enjoy his DVD updates, I don't hate him, and you're right I was being a dumb prick. I apologized to him. I have no right making comments like that and I feel ashamed for making them. Sorry.
Some stores I remember are: Camelot Music, Suncoast, Tape World, Sam Goody, Musicland, and Hastings. I'm located in the mid-west and don't recall any Hastings near me, but would always go to one when I would visit New Mexico. I'm pretty sure all of these except for Hastings are out of business unfortunately. I always enjoyed these stores and it's strange seeing them all gone.
I like mckay used books and cds :) Heh heh. For bargain music cd's. 25 cents to 95 cents and you won't believe the things I've found. They've got movies and games and books too. I bet if you worked at one of those places you would get even better stuff.
Where I live, we have this great store called Dimple Records! They have DVD, blu ray, VHS, Records, video games, magazines! It's the last store I know of like it. They have great prices too!
One place I love to go for used DVDs is Hastings, there's a ton of locations where I live, but I don't know where else they are. Then in of my malls I think there was a Suncoast and a Sam Goody, but the Suncoast closed, but the Sam Goody is still there. Then at a mall across town has an F.Y.E.
Suncoast still has an original store in Glenbrook Square Mall here in Ft Wayne, IN. It sucks now though because it is nothing like it use to be. They sell a lot of used DVD's, and even used the prices are still too high.
my first dvd was Contact with Jodie Foster :) 1997... there was only 20 to choose from and the dvd player cost 300 bucks... i also remember i bought a cd record/burner that was 400 bucks!!!!
Am I the only one that finds it sad that some 40 year old man got the top comment and he is basically just being a little bitch because he doesn't think being a child in the 80's counts as "experiencing it". Idk I just find it annoying when older people can't have mutual respect for younger generations.
@huhhhhhhhhhhhh09 I find it hard when someone refers to their glory days from the age of birth to 4 years old. You are not being intellectually honest with yourself if you believe someone thinks that period of their life is the most vivid and conscious memories of their past.
@HelloWalterSobchak Personally I don't try to judge how other people experience consciousness, I tend to believe having never been that person I have no say in how they judge portions of their life. I feel you shouldn't assume so much about another individual and mostly I feel insulting someone for a belief that in no way harms you or another isn't as great of a thing that the anonymity of the internet makes it appear to be.
@huhhhhhhhhhhhh09 You say people shouldn't assume, or insult due to internet anonymity.Yet, you called me a "40year old bitch". I'm 32, not 40. I left a sarcastic comment making fun, in a completely non-abrasive manner, about how Shawn was 4 years old when the 80's ended. I enjoy Shawns video, and he is one of the few channels I look forward to with his new videos. You guys need to stop being so sensitive. In Shawns videos, he constantly poke fun at people in a non offenive way
@HelloWalterSobchak Yeah I insulted you but you instigated it, your talk came out of nothing, I was simply trying to defend Shawn and just so you know talking about how someone is shitting themselves does come across as demeaning regardless of age, Shawn obviously agreed with me. I'm tired of people giving him so much shit, if you like him as much as you claim you do youd stop because it is obvious it bothers him. I'm done arguing with you, say what you want to say, you aren't changing your mind
@huhhhhhhhhhhhh09 Yes Sir Galahad. We are done. You did your royal duty and came to the aid of a youtuber who was butthurt over being accused of being too young to talk about the 80's, like someone born in the 70's. You're a shining example of the Knights of the Round Table, and have demonstrated your duty of defending youtubers whom you have sworn allegiance to. You're a brave warrior, that even Merlin the Magician, and King Arthur, would be proud of. I Knight thee...Douchebag
@coolduder plus what was cool about disc jockey was they would let u get cds off the shelves and listen to them to determine if u wanted to purchase them
@coolduder I remember long ago when I was a kid on the college campus here in ky they had a rental place I think it was called back door video and if u really wasn't looking ud miss it but it was like in a basement of a wharehouse and it was dark and they had tons of vhs movies a lot of rare and hard to find ones too I love those little hole in the wall places. Plus we had a disc jockey in the mall long ago and they had cd listening stations with featured artists playing in them
The best place that I have ever gone to I discovered this year. It is called "Zia Records" and they are in Las Vegas and Arizona. They have the largest selection on new and used blu-rays by far. They also carry video games from NES to PS3 and Xbox 360. They also have a cool rewards card, where you get points to get half off of an item (saving my points to use on a box set right now). If you are near one go check it out.
@HelloWalterSobchak Mostly MJ. Like in that video of them seeing Take Me Home Tonight, he was like "oh I felt like I was taken home."...but you're right, he probably remembers nothing.
I never thought I'd say it but I really do miss Borders. Also, here in New England there were two other chain stores, one called Strawberry's and the other Coconuts (no joke). I think they may have been bought out by f.y.e. Now all of them are gone.
I recall in the mid-80's Turtles' Records and Tapes in the Atlanta,Ga. area that transitioned to include VHS rentals, the chain was bought buy BBust. Nearly all the art house movie theaters are gone from Atlanta as I've noticed from visiting there.
Shawn, you spend at least 70% of your videos talking about how much better movies/tv shows/music/malls/EVERYTHING was when you were a kid. I don't think you've ever visited a mall without complaining about how much better it was in the 80s. Have you ever thought about spending some time looking FORWARD? Sure some things were better in the 80s -- some things were better in the 90s. Some things were better in the 2000s, and a LOT of things are better now, in the 2010s.
@MidnightSunglasses Well with movies mostly everyone pretty much agrees films were better and with horror the best movies come from the last 70s and early 80s. Im not always looking back as much as I use to though when I was with mj he did that alot more then I do. Also sometimes i dont have much to talk about in the around the towns and just talk about when ever I can. And looking forward I will say ive done more with my life in the last 2 years so the best memories are more from now.
@MidnightSunglasses That's all opinion based, some people just really love nostalgia, my self included.
I didn't grow up in the 80s, but I think we can all agree the whole experience of buying movies isn't nearly as great as it used to be. Looking forward, it's not getting much more interesting, just easier.
@MidnightSunglasses so the world being in economic disaster, and the american government trying to control the internet and imprison people without trial is better than what was going on in the 80s and 90s?
@MidnightSunglasses What's better now than it was in the 80s ? The malls today have no style. They all pretty much look the same with horrible, overpriced stores that also have no real style to them. The 80s malls were colourful and had great designs.
@MidnightSunglasses Any avid movie collector can understand what Shawn is talking about. Now that u can easily buy virtually any title ever made by simply doing a quick google search takes the fun out of everything. Back in the 80s & 90s there was way more video stores & theres something beautiful about getting out there & digging through movies untill u find that hidden gem youve always been lookin for. Why would he b lookin forward when the whole point of the vid is lookin back.Hence the title
In Wisconsin there's a place called Family Video were you can rent, buy and order movies. I always order movies from the store or off the internet. I dont know if its anywere else.
I remember waxie maxie, u took me back with that name, im 27 and I remember alot of these places. Do u remember the wiz or erol's video? My mom used to work at an erols video store so I spent alot of time there. Nice post.
No physical copy = HORRIBLE

@coolduder On Cue had a ton of music CDs and Cassettes. They also sold books and VHS videos and some other odd things like collectible action figures and stuff like that, if I remember correctly. I don't know if it was a big chain store or a regional thing because I had only been inside the one in a local mall. They closed a long time ago, probably before DVDs were even sold widely in stores. They had predominantly VHS movies. It was a really cool store and was pretty big; like a big FYE store.

aztr0zombie 2 months ago
@aztr0zombie Acting isn't a job ? Huh. It was the last time I checked.
Spottedfeather 2 months ago
@Spottedfeather Minor roles in no-budget films every few months does not qualify as a "job" in my book, that's a hobby. A job allows you to support yourself. I always get a kick out of it when people ask him acting or movie making questions as if he has made it to the big time... the dude is almost 30, lives with his parents and makes youtube videos.

xdexhumanizex 2 months ago
@xdexhumanizex Getting a job and moving out of your parents house when you're creeping up on 30 years old isn't important? That's way more important than discussing failed video/music stores.

Am I the only one that finds it sad that some 40 year old man got the top comment and he is basically just being a little bitch because he doesn't think being a child in the 80's counts as "experiencing it". Idk I just find it annoying when older people can't have mutual respect for younger generations.
huhhhhhhhhhhhh09 2 months ago 3
@huhhhhhhhhhhhh09 Ya I agree and removed that comment. Totally have great memories from being a kid.
coolduder 2 months ago
@huhhhhhhhhhhhh09 I find it hard when someone refers to their glory days from the age of birth to 4 years old. You are not being intellectually honest with yourself if you believe someone thinks that period of their life is the most vivid and conscious memories of their past.
HelloWalterSobchak 2 months ago
@HelloWalterSobchak Personally I don't try to judge how other people experience consciousness, I tend to believe having never been that person I have no say in how they judge portions of their life. I feel you shouldn't assume so much about another individual and mostly I feel insulting someone for a belief that in no way harms you or another isn't as great of a thing that the anonymity of the internet makes it appear to be.
huhhhhhhhhhhhh09 2 months ago
@huhhhhhhhhhhhh09 You say people shouldn't assume, or insult due to internet anonymity.Yet, you called me a "40year old bitch". I'm 32, not 40. I left a sarcastic comment making fun, in a completely non-abrasive manner, about how Shawn was 4 years old when the 80's ended. I enjoy Shawns video, and he is one of the few channels I look forward to with his new videos. You guys need to stop being so sensitive. In Shawns videos, he constantly poke fun at people in a non offenive way
HelloWalterSobchak 2 months ago
@HelloWalterSobchak Yeah I insulted you but you instigated it, your talk came out of nothing, I was simply trying to defend Shawn and just so you know talking about how someone is shitting themselves does come across as demeaning regardless of age, Shawn obviously agreed with me. I'm tired of people giving him so much shit, if you like him as much as you claim you do youd stop because it is obvious it bothers him. I'm done arguing with you, say what you want to say, you aren't changing your mind
huhhhhhhhhhhhh09 2 months ago 2
@huhhhhhhhhhhhh09 Yes Sir Galahad. We are done. You did your royal duty and came to the aid of a youtuber who was butthurt over being accused of being too young to talk about the 80's, like someone born in the 70's. You're a shining example of the Knights of the Round Table, and have demonstrated your duty of defending youtubers whom you have sworn allegiance to. You're a brave warrior, that even Merlin the Magician, and King Arthur, would be proud of. I Knight thee...Douchebag

Plus we had a disc jockey in the mall long ago and they had cd listening stations with featured artists playing in them
ben7930 2 months ago
The best place that I have ever gone to I discovered this year. It is called "Zia Records" and they are in Las Vegas and Arizona. They have the largest selection on new and used blu-rays by far. They also carry video games from NES to PS3 and Xbox 360. They also have a cool rewards card, where you get points to get half off of an item (saving my points to use on a box set right now). If you are near one go check it out.

redvitaminblue 2 months ago
I recall in the mid-80's Turtles' Records and Tapes in the Atlanta,Ga. area that transitioned to include VHS rentals, the chain was bought buy BBust. Nearly all the art house movie theaters are gone from Atlanta as I've noticed from visiting there.
193and 2 months ago
Shawn, you spend at least 70% of your videos talking about how much better movies/tv shows/music/malls/EVERYTHING was when you were a kid. I don't think you've ever visited a mall without complaining about how much better it was in the 80s. Have you ever thought about spending some time looking FORWARD? Sure some things were better in the 80s -- some things were better in the 90s. Some things were better in the 2000s, and a LOT of things are better now, in the 2010s.
MidnightSunglasses 2 months ago 11
@MidnightSunglasses Well with movies mostly everyone pretty much agrees films were better and with horror the best movies come from the last 70s and early 80s. Im not always looking back as much as I use to though when I was with mj he did that alot more then I do. Also sometimes i dont have much to talk about in the around the towns and just talk about when ever I can. And looking forward I will say ive done more with my life in the last 2 years so the best memories are more from now.
coolduder 2 months ago
@MidnightSunglasses I disagree
blackheart103 2 months ago
@MidnightSunglasses That's all opinion based, some people just really love nostalgia, my self included.
I didn't grow up in the 80s, but I think we can all agree the whole experience of buying movies isn't nearly as great as it used to be. Looking forward, it's not getting much more interesting, just easier.
LeMunson 2 months ago
@MidnightSunglasses so the world being in economic disaster, and the american government trying to control the internet and imprison people without trial is better than what was going on in the 80s and 90s?

@MrSean677 that stuff started in the 80s with Reagan. Reaganomics
HelloWalterSobchak 2 months ago
