@JillBattleSlut Most public buildings in most western nations have those mandates. The problem is that most people don't have the knowledge to eliminate electrical fire hazards. For example, some people like to cut the third ground prong off power cords for some reason.
@MIKON8ERISBACK this is true but the real risk is not with public buildings it is small offices like this one as they often don't have the funds for sprinklers and a linked fire alarm system. my advice is to follow these steps.
1. at the end of the day turn of sockets and lighting at the consumer unit this way you won't miss any sockets.
2. know your buisness if this was to happen to you what could you do to keep operating could you work from home do you have backups of digital and paper data.

To put it simple, the farther down that smoke goes, the harder it will be to find clean, breathable air. Even the light smoke can cause respiratory problems, and even choking under some conditions, and opening a window will only create more oxygen fuel for the fire.
That void area above the ceiling is a perfect tunnel for the heat to radiate to other parts of the structure... so a small fire even if brought under control by the fire personal coula have started another fire somewhere else in the building and can go unnoticed for a long time.
What are examples of this occurring?I know one is careless smoking.

@firelert The North American "NEMA connectors" have neither switches that come with the sockets nor fuse protection on the power cords.

notice that the smoke slowly descends downwards.
