  • This album definitely changed my life for the better BOOM!

  • Awesome after a couple listens

  • It's sounds just like the pink Floyd of this era, like atom heart mother pink floyd

  • Comment removed

  • i hope Foster the People make something similar to Congratulations

  • it sucked.

  • I agree that it's acquired taste but I think it's a more consistent and enjoyable listen than oracular spectacular, which kinda goes flat after the first 5 tracks

  • lol id love to do acid with god and go to a lazar beam concert

  • this album is one of those special ones that my kids will listen to one day and tell me i was lucky to be there when it came out :)

  • I didn't know you liked this cd too!

  • Great review.. Cant wait until I see MGMT live for the first time. By the way, Congratulations was miles ahead of Oracular Spectacular.

  • i love i found a whistle anybody else? ?

  • what's the song he always ends with?

  • @NintendoDevil What about the album was shit. You say the album is shit but you don't say why. This is in no way "hipster rock". If anything were hipster, it would be their first album. "Kids" screams hipster.

  • @MrCalemFilms listen to it more, and one day it's genius will hit you

  • What you said from 3:39 to 3:55 is what you think of music. You suck just thought I would let you know.

  • Worst reviewer ever! Like record labels only likes hits lol, douche!

  • wow. Really great review. Guy knows what he is talking about. Doesn't talk bullshit or do any of that pretentious act that most Youtube personalities do.

  • I don't think MGMT completely left their sound at Oracular Spectacular. If you think about the songs more towards the end of the album (4th dimensional transition, future reflections), they are a bit closer to the psych rock in congratulations, which also explains why they're the best songs on the album ;P Awesome album though, anyone who doesn't really like Congrats should try to take a few more listens. It totally grows on you, it's been my favorite ever since it came out.

  • dude when you said it wasnt imediate, thats what i have been telling everyone who loved the first album but didnt like this one since the day it came out. i notice in soooo many of your videos you have the same thoughts about albums that i do and im just like YES thank you for saying that! but for real, love you man. you should write for rolling stone

  • This is one of my favourite albums of all time! I think it's just incredible start to finish. It's hands down in my top 10. I find it much better than their first album, because the first album was less consistent, it had great singles and some weaker songs in between. But THIS one is perfect start to finish. Really clean too. Love it.

  • 'The first red flag for me that this record was going to be a hot steamy turd was when I heard they have gotten Sonic Boom from Spacemen 3 to produced it. Great idea getting the dude from Spacemen 3 that tours only with a Casio keyboard and a delay pedal. Wouldn’t wanna get the dude who wrote all the rad songs in Spacemen 3 and went on to make a stack of killer albums under the moniker of Spiritualized" TMK best critique

  • this is my favorite album ever ... it gives me hope that good music still exists and siberian breaks... aahhhhhh, i fall in love everytime i listen to that masterpiece!

  • Way preferred Oracular Spectacular , like its my fav album of all time, so this was a real big disappointment for me. :(

  • @happyfrankie what was wrong with it for you?

  • @happyfrankie I hate how people like a couple songs on albums.

  • Siberian Breaks is one of my favorite songs of all time, and Lady Dada's Nightmare is very underrated.

  • I didn't like this album at all. Surprising review. I'd give it a 4/10

  • i liked this album soo much better siberian breaks my fav song its just so good and i think its a ver underratted album and this album sounds much more muture than orecule spectacular

  • Good comparison there. MGMT really does remind me a lot of The Beatles from their psychedelic and experimental eras.

  • You guys fucking SUCK if you say this album sucks! Stop being so goddamn close minded, and accept the fact that MGMT didn't want their sound to be "mainstream", there new album is just more underground sounding, that's all, something I guess not many of you people are use to. So get that through your THICK ogre heads. This album was beautiful and I applaud it<3

  • @bvba6gir So you say other people should stop being closed minded, and yet anyone who doesn't like this album "fucking sucks"?

I love this album, but I think you might have missed the message.

  • TOTAL shit compared the first album. Changing direction is great at all but now they sound no different from any other hipster rock shit. Oracular Spectacular was amazing.

  • @NintendoDevil Nooo wayyy they're second album sounds NOTHING like any of the "hipster rock shit out" there. There new sound has more of a psychedelic rock 60s sound to it. If anything, there first album is more "upground" than Congratulations. Congratulations is more underground because it isn't very typical sounding and it's sounds A LOT like the other underground psychedelic rock out there. <3 It's very eccentric. Not typical or mainstream at all.

  • @NintendoDevil Kids, Time To Pretend and Electric Feel define 'hipster' in my opinion, but whats wrong with hipsters? Let's leep an open mind here people. MGMT!

  • M...G...M...T....... CONBWAHBALAS

  • this was a pretty terrible record. the only memorable (and tolerable) songs are it's working, congratulations and someone's missing. the rest is basically garbage

  • @blinkziggy calling Siberian Breaks garbage. an hero

  • Oracular Spectacular is like a 6.5/10 for me. Congratulations is like a 9/10 for me.

  • @xDeadMisfitsx Oracular Spectular would be a fairly close second. That album is also very good... but Congratulations is mental and I agree with you on it being better than their previous album.

  • this is probably my favorite album ever. seriously. I have listened to it so many times. it just make me feel so great when I listen to it. But when I do I listen to it from start to finish.

    You should try it.

  • I loved the album :D

  • I saw them live when they played with beck, they seemed pretty good

  • so sad how if it doesnt sound like whats on the radio it sucks like he said many of these songs do not conform to a pop song structure. open your minds and open your ears so many of my friends who loved the kids song heard the new album and said they suck now ..are u effin kiddin me ? just listen to the crap on the radio and leave the good bands for people who can appreciate good music plz

  • 8.5, flash delerium is great

  • I hate how people say congratulations is completely different from oracular spectacular because it really isn't, the people that say that probably have only heard kids, electric feel, or time to pretend. The rest of the songs like of birds moons and monsters, future reflections, and pieces of what are very similar to the ones on congratulations

  • Both 'Oracular Spectacular' and 'Congratulations' are great in their own way. Each is a different experience, but both are very much worth the journey they take you on--as different as they may be. I think that's a testament to how talented these two guys are as song writers.

  • Thank You for doing what you do!

    great review!

  • Just give this man a tv show. Good review as always.

  • @TheQwerty92x I would love to see that tv show... but, his head... is just fuckin.. wow. What a fuck head. I dont understand. just a fucking puts of a man. I LOVE his reviews.. But such a fucking maggot

  • lmfaoooo congratulation !!!!!

  • Although I don't know why ... when I hit around 3:40 I suddenly had to take a shit.

    That was weird.

  • Oracular Spectacular is better... I acctually liked it a lot (not for the singles but for every and each one of the songs) and Congratulations was kind of a turn off for me... I didn't find it interesting... And actually thought they had too much drugs and surf and too little music... HOWEVER, I do need to give it a third listen... I closer one too... A very patien listen... because I really don't want to discard a band I liked so much.

  • could you please review Kendric Lamars Ep and O.D albums/Mixtape

  • mgmt is the sexiest band ever! i love congradulations

  • I love MGMT's long songs, what trips they are

  • i prefer 'congratulations' over 'oracular spectacular'

  • I think their first album is very good but this album is very bad.I'll compare it to how I compare brain wilsons SMILE to the album he put out right before SMILE .the album brain wilson put out before SMILE was music for dead people ,literally grave yard music.but again in 2008 brain got it right again with THAT LUCKY OLD SUN.ok I just made this about brain wilson & not MGMGT.by the way the few songs I do like on this album are beach boys inspired .

  • For a guy who likes MGMT because of his essence, he hates this album. I hate.

  • em gee em te congragulations

  • Lol @ the intro =D

  • love it!

  • Best album of the 21st Century in my opinion

  • Finally, people who like this album. Everyone I know hated it. I love it!

  • Congratulations!!

  • Fans of the title song might like Mount Palomar by Soft Hearted Scientists, here on YT.

  • Hit the nail right on the head. Your criticisms are concise, yet wonderfully imaginative. You "get it." You "understand" the music biz. Your insights cut through any pretense that may exist and present us with a cool, cold logic that defies explanation. I "get you." Unfortunately, there are a lot out there who do not. I've been looking over your comments here, and a lot of people find you are: idiotic, pompous, nerdy, self-important, wildly arrogant, ill-advised, pretentious (you?!), up-tight, u

  • @ConstantineRobbins ncool, gross, obnoxious, gay (I think not), conceited, self-conscious, stiff, in over your head, wholly out-of-touch, just another uppity talking head, idiotic. I don't think so. Give them time. They will learn. Let them evolve. We'll be waiting, with arms open. Kudos my friend, take heart.

  • i liked congrats way betta than oracular.

  • Honestly this album was only good when i was stoned off my tree but when sober it was a bit of a drag

  • 10/10. Each song is an adventure and you never get tired of them...at least to me. I've listened to all of them at least 100 times.

  • you said whoever thought congratulations was unexpected wasnt paying attention to the band. i say, whoever thought congratulations was new territory DIDNT EVEN LISTEN TO ALL OF ORACULAR SPECTACULAR. the youth, 4th dimensional transition, pieces of what, of moons birds and monsters, the handshake and future reflections are all trippy, experimental songs that stand in stark contrast to the electro pop sounds of kids, electric feel, time to pretend.

  • Best thing i have on vinyl!

  • @catboy20k

    me too.

also only thing i have on vynl, but yet the best shit ever.

  • Awesome review!!

    I love this album!!

    The first was too poppy...

I dare say they are now making music that will last decades

  • Review is spot on I would be saying strong 8 or light 9 because I keep going back to this LP!

  • i love i found a whistle. the build up is freaking lovely.

  • better than oracular spectacular, spot on your review

  • If you like albums like Pet Sounds or Sgt. Peppers, you have to like this album.

Also, Flash Delirium has one of the sickest hooks I've ever heard.

  • This CD is far superior to OS.

  • I really like it. Its very calming despite its noisy fastpaced parts like end of flash delirium, and Brian eno. I absolutely love the title track. Makes me be grateful to All i have and whats around me.

  • My favorite track is probably Flash Delirium. Love the sound.

  • My favorite album of 2010. I'm surprised so many people didn't see this coming. To me this is the sound of the second half of Oracular Spectacular, which I preferred to the single loaded and highly tiring front end of that album.

  • I LOVE this album.. best album of 2010, and definitely in my top 3 of favorite albums right now

  • Not a bad album, but my 3 fave tracks are the awesome "Congratulations" , "Someone's Missing" , and "Lady Dada's Nightmare". Nothing here sounds much like their fabuloso"Electric Feel", but overall this cd ain't bad.

  • i really like both albums but i like the raw taste of oracular because when they would perform such songs like of moons birds and monsters live it was so amazing and raw or even 4th dimensional transition which i didn't like the studio but the live version really kicks butt, so i prefer the first but i really loved congratulations

  • I personally liked Oracular Spectacular better. It had more catchy songs like "Weekend Wars" & "The Youth". Now on the other hand Congratulations, at least to me, sounded like the band's low. The songs reminded me of early britpop, wich i allways hated. Althought it's a low album, it's not horrible, it does have some good songs like "Congratulations", my favorite track. Nevertheless i still like MGMT and i personally think it's the new Pink Floid .

  • Jesus Christ on a Crutch... you remind of my brother... so much.. everything that comes out of your mouth is so annoying. Just like my bro :D

  • better album then their first one for sure, I'd give it an 8

  • this is far and away their best album

  • I like all 3 mgmt albums but congratulations is just the best in my opinion.

they left this track of easy catchy songs but now it's just a deep trip into the brain of mgmt. awesome!

  • i just love all of their songs!!!

  • HAY GUYS THIS MUSIC SUCKS AND IF YOU THINK ITS GOOD YOU HAVE AN OPINION

    BUT I SPEAK FACT

  • Look, this is how it is. This is music. That's what it is. You have to judge it based on how good the music is. It doesn't matter if there's a great homage to Brian Eno in one of the songs. You have been fooled into thinking the music in this album is good by how abstract and weird it is. You assume that makes it creative, but it doesn't. In fact, it's meaningless. It's layer upon layer of bullshit that is meant to hide the fact that there is not ONE good, memorable melody in there.

  • It was a horrible album. If you think it's good, you're lying to yourself, and looking at things that are totally peripheral to just how good the songs are. They sound like shit. They're dull, muddled, pointless. DO you know how hard it is to come up with highly defined, catchy melodies that are original and grab the attention of any listener? Harder than anything you've ever done in your whole life. That's what they achieved on their first album. It was their "Nevermind." They regressed hugely

  • @flightofthewalrus you do not understand what they were trying to do at ALL. They were trying to stay away from the media and all that shit. Why dont you shut the fuck up and do a little research on something you seem so confident about. They didnt want to make catchy poppy shit, just stuff they liked

  • Pedant twat.

  • Mgmt is absolutely my favorite band. This is my favorite album by them. Why? Because I discovered them and they were singing, Brian Eno, and Flash Delirium. I was into THAT music. Oracular Spectacular is great, too, but, this is my favorite.

  • U gave this album an 8 and Crystal

Castle singles a 5 on their singles. Unsubscribing NOW!

  • I'm not sure why some mgmt fans were put out by this album. Did they not listen to OS? Weekend wars, 4th dimensional transition, of moons birds and monsters, the handshake, future reflections, all these songs would have fit well on congratulations IMO. I love both lp's but I would say congratulations is my favorite, only barely, siberian breaks tips it over the edge.

  • @timeub32100 because they only heard the singles...

  • i don't like this guy AT ALL, but he's got a couple good ideas

  • should be a 10.

  • I like both of them just as much. I think they're the only band who can pull of going to different lengths considering their electric sounds already. Even in oracular spectacular many songs sounded different. They're an eclectic band which is what's gona draw people in

  • I definitely picked up this LP expecting to hear groovy beats and catchy vocals like in electric feel or kids, but when i sat down and put on the headphones to get to some "music appreciation hour" i was surprised to find an album that, although you cant dance to it, you can chill and have a more lasting spiritual experience with it. pleasantly surprised.

  • This album is amazing..

Really nice instrumentation/sound and amazing vocals

  • I wanna be like you, I mean you know so much.

  • I fucking love congratulations

  • Fuck Oracular Spectacular.

    Congratulations is boss.

  • much better than their last album. Definitely took a listen or two before I got it, but it grows on you almost instantaneously when it does. Love how old school these guys are with more modern mixing. I think it sounds more 70's than anything else, the backing vocals on "Its Working" reek of 50's.

  • @Danthemanhan it was a great album!

  • @Danthemanhan you are crap. lol sorry i am quite defensive of this album. just curious, why don't you like it?

  • @ClearThinkingLuz while I realize that all bands evolve and their sound changes and embrace that change in most bands I listen to, MGMT changed in a way that meant they no longer held my interest. They traded their funk for psychedelic nonsense, and that's something I'm just plain not interested in listening to.

  • @Danthemanhan Okay, fair enough. I can see how you feel that way, some of the songs on congratulations do not have that same energy as some of the ones on Oracular Spectacular. Nevertheless, i love the "psychedelic nonsense" on the new album, as you call it!

  • I like this album more more than the first, so fucking awesome. long live MGMT

  • @Darin847 YE MAN IT WAS A SICK ALBUM!!!

  • Comment removed

  • At first, I was like 'okay.' Then, I was like 'WHOA, this album is fun! Scooby Doo on Channel 2!' Then I wonder if they thought the last comment as they made Dan Treacy. *shrug* Anyway, when are you going to review Sun Airway? :/

  • I fucking love this album and I love how it burned all the people who thought mgmt was mainstream. and my favorite songs are in the middle

  • The way this album sounds is as much down to producer Pete Kember as the band, but you've overlooked that completely in your review.

Listen to his bands Spacemen 3, Spectrum and Experimental Audio Research and you'll see why.

Nice Anthony Ausgang picture in the background, by the way.

  • it was too crazy i started getting into psychedelic rock and stuff and found MGMT through a friend when he gave me OS and i loved it, i thought it was just too cool a new band with music like this, not too long later congratulations came out and i LOVE it and metanoia is so amazing...i like congratulations more than OS but i like old psychedelic soo

  • this album while frying is gooood times

  • Why do you wear a t shirt outside, but a sweater inside?

  • @tokillacatchersrye Yes, this is a fascinating question indeed, how long shall we have to wait for an answer!!

  • Comment removed

  • can't stand this band. really awful crap.

  • @sonofagunder fuck you dude, i'm pretty sure everyone will acquiesce

  • @whynotfish

chill dude it's just an opinion. if it makes you feel better, I really enjoyed Siberian Breaks

  • @sonofagunder Was a killer track. People don't usually get that far.

I personally think Congratulations is far more mature than the last one.

  • @sonofagunder fuck you dude, i'm pretty sure everyone will acquiesce when i say you have no taste in music what so ever. well that could not be true but i highly disagree with your opinion of this band

  • @sonofagunder wow, fuck you dude they are not terrible your opinions are just stupid

  • my first "weird" album got me into soooo many other bands ive listened to this at least a gazillion times

  • dude you are so right on i get 100% of what you said, you have a good taste in music

  • Your reviews butter my bread, bro.

  • Post Wave

  • I have very open ears. I listen to the most drawn out and esoteric music. so thats not a problem for me.. anyways, i just thought it was boring, really incredibly boring. with the exception of Siberian Breaks which was only entertaining.

  • what a terrible cover though...

  • Map props to this review. Check my concert vids.

  • Haha, I love the way you said congratulations.

  • Loved Oracular Spectacular, but always thought it had weak songs, specially compared with those awesome songs that are Kids or Time to pretend. Congratulations feels better for me, although the middle part is a bit thougher (Siberian Breaks). Yeah, it has something in common (although here is more radical ) with side B of Abbey Road, but I feel this isn´t really close to Bowie, maybe more to Floyd, or Jethro, or Beatles´s Strawberry Fields, or Roky Ericksson more psychodelic stuff.

  • Brian Eno!

    Brian Eno!

  • The album came out right around the time I got into OS. To me, it was a very immediate album, in the same sense California by Mr. Bungle was to me; You spend the first ten listens thinking "What the everloving fuck is this? I NEED to understand it!", and so you can't stop listening to it. Then, after a good few listens, the penny drops, and you can start to sing along. So maybe not a conventionally immediate album, but still one that didn't leave my stereo for around a month after purchase.

  • You rate out of eight, right?

  • @platypae333 No, he doesn't. I've seen him give an album a 9.

  • You really hit the nail on the head with this review. I do miss the sound they had on some of the singles on OS, however, those were the earliest tracks on that album and It is completely understandable that they would grow out of that. I actually find that more exciting because they are likely to continue to grow and keep us eagerly awaiting the release of every album to come!

  • OS was satisfying. Congrats is like a f**kin 60's acid trip of going to as beach and doing the monster mash. Better album than OS. Different, and better.

  • I'd give this album an 9 out of 10 absolutely fantastic

  • Congratulations TRIP video!!!

    /watch?v=Amcoztov_wo

    /watch?v=Amcoztov_wo

    /watch?v=Amcoztov_wo

    Peace

  • Obviously they were going for the throwback kind of album which I can wholly appreciate. The influence was their and you knew it, it was kind of weak in some parts. Some of the songs felt like they could have spent more time on them. But I liked it a lot and I think it's more of a preview of what's to come. They are growing closer and closer to what their true sound is going to be. I just love the surprises that they throw at us all the time.

  • I like this album better than Oracular Spectatcular. It feels like they are more themselves, doing a lot more experiments, all very successful, unless maybe the screaming on Lady dada's nightmare which in my opinion spoils the track a bit. I dont think it has less melodic quality than Oracular, actually, some of them you just have to find and uncover before they really catch.

  • I prefer Oracular Spectacular as a whole, the meoldies, including but not limited to the singles, were much stronger with a more memorable staying power than Congratulations which after several listens still feels unresolved melodically.

  • I've listened to it 20-30 times and I still don't understand it. Very amazing album. Picked it up over a month ago and haven't stopped listening to it since. I'd give it a 10. BUY IT NOW!!!!!!!!!!

  • i felt that this album was amazing.

what were the songs that you didnt like?

  • More fun superficial facts: I'm 29; what slightly embarrassed me about enjoying Time to Pretend and Kids so much is I could easily imagine sixteen year old girls going crazy for it. Not to be AGE-IST or anything, but had my musical tastes suddenly succumb to the sway of a 16 yr old girl's heartthrob? But Congratulations, by rocking to kingdom fucking come and back, gloriously vilified my taste in them. How...considerate! You know what else is a good album? Spacemen 3: Recurring. (Smirk.)

  • I admit to being somebody who only enjoyed the two main singles on Oracular Spectacular. I'd explain why, but this thing doesn't let me have enough characters. But the thing is having listened to Congratulations, I now like the non-singles (Of Moons, Birds, and Monsters) a lot more. Maybe it's because I mistook MGMT for a band without any substance. Like the song "Future Reflections" is A REALLY GREAT FUCKING SONG. I don't know why I didn't know that: Care to offer any insight, Anthony?

  • wth an 8? i would give it a 9 at least

  • Anyone else out there just call them Management?

  • I loved both OS and Congratulations, they're totally different and that is ok because both albums have great music!

  • Comment removed

  • @malz4ever agreed. i wish he'd cut out the pseudo intellectual pronunciation of words.

  • @malz4ever But you don't even know me as a person. Although, I can unarguably say you're pretty annoying as a commenter.

  • @theneedledrop kudos

  • @malz4ever

Everyone on the internet is annoying.

  • @malz4ever ZING!

  • I totally agree with everything that you have said in your review! I like OS because when it came out there was nobody really provdiding the same sound as that album and it was new, fresh and catchy. Now we have this new album from MGMT, Congratulations.. there was alot of hype about the release of this album however when it came out along with the reviews it was getting I dont thin many people who listened to the OC album had the patience to catch on to this new MGMT style.. 2fan types.
