That's a very good question. It's kinda hard to define it in american standards but to put it short there are varying degrees of politeness in Japanese. "Desu" is right in the middle so you're not overly polite and you're not being rude. I'd suggest looking it up to get a clear answer about "desu". hope this helps

thats what you say at the end of a japanese sentance like... daitai, hachiji han kara rokuji made desu. meaning;... around 8.30 to 5 o clock. but desu is not always used in a full sentance like when saying a question ^^
