Tbh, the reason Muslims fast is not really to empathize with poor people. There are plenty of poor and hungry Muslims in the world who still fast in Ramadan. The more legit reason is so that they can distance themselves from worldly desires, like food, water, sex, swearing, and purify themselves so they can get closer to God through extra worship and good deeds.
