I'm curious as to how long backer boards have been around. My house was built in 1960 with ceramic tile in the shower, were contractors using backer boards back then?
@drumspeak5 It was in rough shape. Punched a number of holes in it while removing the tiles. Also needed to put in a membrane liner so I needed to remove the bottom half of it to do it right.
Hello... Is there a way to attach cement boards directly to a brickwall? I was thinking "glueing" it with thinset, then securing with tapcons... Or should I go with furring strips
I would attach 1"x3" furring strips to the brick wall using tapcon anchors and liquid nails. I would then fasten the cement board to the furing strips with non-corrosive screws and liquid nails.
I want to do this with the shower in my 1949 house. But I am betting that removing the backer is not going to be as simple as easily removing screws.

@mcdavidhome100 To be honest I'm not sure, but I have used it for at least the last 15 years.

I am not sure why backer board was removed .There seems to be no water damage and looks structurally sound ?

My shower removal is much messier than shown. They used plain plywood behind the shower tiles.

can i use water resistant plasterboard, then tile over that?

Definetly not. Water will eventually wick through the grout to the water resistant paper and then through it.

good vid thanks. is the backer board a special material or is it just regular plasterboard?
2Calam 1 year ago
Backerboard is made out of a cement material with a screen imbedded into it.
