  • @jmpince Ya quisiera yo... All along the watchtower

  • Hey, thanks for the great video. I have one of these too, and wasn't getting what I wanted from it. But I have just messed around with the settings, as suggested and found much better clean and overdriven sounds. This amp gets some bad press, but actually several other amps have their valves in the same place without ventilation above. I have just recleaned the contacts on my valves and hey presto, just like new.

  • I had one of these....bought it the year they came out.

It did a "dirty-clean" REALLY REALLY well....crank the clean channel to 9-10 and you got THE best gain-y Brit invasion style rock tone.

the gain channell was a little too bright....fuzzy like a Muff at 3 o'clock.

BUT mine burnt up in 2008....litterally went poof, with plume of smoke and sparks and everything....looked like someone lit off a firecracker inside it....super sad day.

  • kick ass man

  • if it gets to hot, what happens? stuff gets burned or safety mechanism just drops volume?

if stuff gets burned, how expensive is that stuff?

  • most tubes are a few hundred.

  • what is that song at 1:03??? It sounds great! :)

Good playin man, and nice sound ;)

  • sounds like all along the watchtower

  • love your sound. would you mind sending me your settings on the jtm

  • Clean Channel. Bass all the way up, mid about 5, trebble about 4-5. Fender strat, neck pickup.

Parallel loop send and return connected, and parallel loop volume, up to 10. That way you get extra bass.

  • The volume of clean channel is about 7, and master about 3.

The EL84 tubes disrtor very soon, that's where the overdrive come from.

  • hi.there. love your sound. could your send me your settings

  • Played a JTM60 2x12 for about 5 years and never had any problems. Yes it gets HOT but that's when the notes literally jump off the fretboard. Never had an amp come close to doing that in the same way. Looking for another one right now...they are loud though, master at 6 will kill small farm animals.

  • @evanlikestoparty

    I have the jtm 60 Head ...

    Don't have that problem :) it's getting warm..but that's usual for tube amps, isn't it..but it's not too warm...

  • ive read that it is all to do with the covering on the back my mate had a marshall jcm 800 combo it never worked right couldnt figure it out marshall told us that its a basic design flaw nothing they can do i hope that kinda helps , just remove the back works great nw

  • i have a 1x15, which i have had since the mid 90s. i attached a baseboard booster from home depot to the bottom of the cage and have had no probs with overheating. this amp NEEDS to be pushed to do it justice. it gets a bad rap, but i love mine. les paul, cord, amp, is all you need.

  • I also read that...

I sold this amp a couple of weeks ago, just because I wanted to change, nothing wrong with this one.... I had it for about 9 year or so... Never had ANY problem with it.

Just a few tips: don't put it close to the wall. Let the valves breath. You can also remove the protection in the back, to let more air come in...

But I had it alway there, and never had any problem...

  • Vintage Guitar magazine just had a couple of articles in recent months on what a find the 30 and 60 were. They noted their problems, but I believe most have added a cooling fan and that solved the issues. I'm not sure if they have it on their website, but it might be worth looking.

  • @ociosu that's right it has quite bad reviews on websites, therefore it's really a good deal, I saw one for 400€ today, all retubed...

  • you must be the son of SRV !!

  • Ha ha...

    The clumsy one....

  • awesome, how much did you pay for it?

  • Excellent playing. Thank you for this vid. I've also got a JTM-622 and a JTM-600 Head. These are cool amps that are somewhat underrated. Rock on, brother

  • i use this amp. i play progressive metal, and with the master cranked, and the boost channel volume at like 40-50%, it's plenty loud to keep up with a drummer.

amazing clean tone, amazing light crunch, amazing medium crunch, and great heavier distortion too. i'm suprised this amp gets negative reviews on music sites. i've never had any trouble with mine. even the electro harmonix power tubes in mine produce plenty good of a sound

  • sounds like a cool little amp ! does it works well with pedals ?

  • Yeah it does. I use a Boss GT10 with it. sounds great!

  • Hows the clean headroom on this amp?

Loud enough to keep up with a drummer?

  • In its normal configuration, with EL34 it has much more than needed. With 928-PR, the power is reduced to half (about 25-30 watts). This way, there is power enough, although the amp master must be pushed up to 8-9. The clean channel is no clean anymore. There is a smooth and very nice distortion.

  • Hola te salieron muy caras las valvulas con los adaptadores?

  • sobre 80-90 euros, creo recordar...

  • absolutely incredible tone. They need to make an amp like this, but running el84's. It sounds so much better than the 1974x to me. Killer tones, thanks for posting.

  • Yeah, That's why Marshall pulled it after two years. Sounds like your bridge rectifier went and you might have to replace an internal fuse. When you get it back, clip on a small fan aimed at the el-34's. So far, so good for me. I'm a bit hesitant to use the Groove Tubes 928-PR adapter because it hacks the power in half and I gig with mine. Plus, these adapters will alter it tonally. I would image it's like using an attenuator.

  • You are right. They do alter the tone. Anyway, I think that in a good way. I love how it sounds now... It also makes the amp more responsive to pick attack when playing the clean channel. Regarding power, it is still loud enought to play with a drummer. You have to crank the amp up to 9-10, but you get a sweet distortion. I really like it. I also bought a cheap artec parametric equalizer I use between guitar and amp, to increase the bottom end. It is amazing how the sound is improved!

  • I have the 2x12 combo version and it really gave me alot of good years but has recently went down on me. Thank you for the infomation. It seems that these were finicky amps but to be honest I beleive it sounded bettter than my JCM 2000. It is possible that the preamp tubes went bad in mine because I have some work done to and after that it played great for one night and wnet down no noise or sound or anything. But anyway..... I still love both my marshalls.

  • Yes, they do sound great and I'm happy to have mine working again. If you no sound and the tubes don't fire up it is likely the bridge rectifier. This is the most common problem due to heat damage as a result of bad layout. It should cost you less than $100 at the amp guy. Despite the trouble I still love mine. Cheers!

  • If you get volume drop or cracking noises from this amp, clip on a small fan and aim it at the power tubes. Heat goes into the chasis and damages the bridge rectifier and several other components. I put a fan on mine and it plays like new! I came close to throwing it off a cliff.

  • Thanks for the tip.

I have never had any heating problem with the amp.

Now, with the Groove Tubes 928-PR I think it will be more difficult. The 928-PR is an adapter to be plugged into the valve connector, which also works as a heat isolator. I mean, the valves are now plugged into the adapters and the adapters are plugged into the valve connectors of the amp, reducing the heat transmitted

  • I was having exactly that problem with mine, until one day I "cranked" it up a bit and "POOF" it buzzed, squealed and smoked. Needless to say, it stopped working. I have had this amp repaired many times, and have recently read about modifications to ease the troubles with this thing. I guess its back to the shop....

  • tocas de puta madreeeeee! que salvaje! y tocas algo de Led Zeppelin?

  • what'S the song at 0:58?

  • All along the watchtower

  • Beautiful job sir.Really nice.*****

  • Thank you so much. I really appreciate those words coming from such a good player.

  • Don't know if it is your case, but regarding eq, beginners usually don't know that MID is the big point. If you cut mid to 0 you get a nasal tone. If you turn mid to 10 you get a crunchy tone. So, if you want a thrash metal sound, just put mids to zero and a use saturated distortion. If you want crunchy ACDC tone, just put mids about 7-8 and add some overdrive, if you want blues, put mids about 6... Then play with bass and treble to your taste...

  • The eq depends very much on the guitar or the amp I use, or if I play clean or not... But with this amp I usually set the bass about 7, the mids about 6 (the knob is broken so, not to much tweeking here), and the treble about 4... That is because as I said this amp is very trebly, and has little bottom end.

  • Thanks. You are right. The amp is on clean channel, and not, I am not using any effect, just the amp and a strat. The point is that the groove tubes are rated "2", what means that you get a very early distortion. As I said they are very sensitive to dynamics, so just picking a bit hard and you will get a nice overdrive. In any case, I set the volume knob of clean channel close to 8 or 9 in this video, that is the reason of the overdrive. I adjust the total volume with the master knob.

  • I am quite sure that the valves changed the sound of the amp radically. Much more dynamics and creamy tone than with the stock ones. With this valves, the power is reduced to half original power, and the amp works in class A. The Epiphone extension cabinet is also important. The amp speaker lacks bottom end, not too much bass. The bass come mainly from the extension cabinet.
