  • For me it would be interesting, how this pedal reacts with other pedals before it... so i think about plugging my Effectboard before the Blonde, then go right into my Audiointerface for recording.

    Would you recommend that?

Thank you for the great reviews! :)

  • hi guys...lets have a look to the pedal (yojo and/or harley benton) california, ac truetone and britisch. there are copys with the same sound and mutch pretty and low price...test it and you have a smiling face. regards

  • we love your videos.

  • Thanks for a great review. just bought one of these for using at small club gigs, but do you think they can go straight into the PA or do they need to go through a DI box?

  • how would you rate this next to the blackstar ht dual pedal? I'm trying to decide which one to get.I have a single channel amp that just has a clean channel

  • How does this pedal react to pick attack/volume knob changes?

  • This pedal has rendered my Dr Z Maz 18 virtually useless. I love my Maz but, as with any gigging band, volume is an issue. With the Blonde I get incredible tone with an amazing amount of volume control. My band now has the lowest stage volume around AND the best in-house mix. I get more compliments on my tone now than when I was using an actual amp. Probably because everything is heard properly and sits where it should. Now my board is a self contained tone center. I highly recommend this.

  • I'm stoked! Mine is currently on route, and will soon find it's home in my pedal board. I'm probably going to pick up a Liverpool as well (since I have the Brian May switching system on one of my guitars).

  • how i wonder what you think is better, this or the wampler black 65 for authentic blackface fender clean and dirty tones.... Thanks for all the "work" you have put into demoing all these pedals.

  • Why does Sadie sound English in this vid?

  • @kanirip She's having fun with putting on accents, as kids do.

  • Which character series pedal would you use for Skynyrd tones?

  • Cat Scratch Fever.........Great Tone .Dude!!!

  • OMG THIS IS AN INCREDIBLE VIDEO!!!!!!! YOU NAIL EVERY DREAMED OF TONE HOLY CRAP!!

  • @monorailsandwich Oh man..do I have to film it again now?

  • cool pedal - was thinking which one to get but o think this has sold it

  • @Burgerman666 i'm pretty sure this is cool for funk, isn't it? silly question, 'scuse me

  • Are you playing a strat on thsi one?

  • Is this one better than the AMT F1?

  • awesome sounding box

  • thanks for the awesome video man. how well does it work if i want to run the blonde after my effect pedals and straight into the PA compare to using a GT2? which would sound better? do both have preamp and DI? thanks.

  • This sounds like a very versatile effects pedal. You coaxed some very usable sounds from it. I do not hear any hum or other noise either. I'm torn between the OCD and the Blonde, Tough decision for me. I use a Tele, Les Paul and Strat. Does the Blonde work well with all? Thanks to you and the little blonde for the great demo videos.

  • @spyguys Yep, the Blonde is the #1 Character Series for me because it is just that - super versatile.

  • Does this little guy comprise an amp/mic simulation circuit as well?

    Really like all your clips!

    Thanks,

    Zack

  • Will this sound good with humbucker guitars??

  • @whiterex1 Just as good as with single coils. Maybe even better. :)

  • I'd like to try it plugged into my Fender champion 600 with external 12"cab

Did you compare with Catalinbread formula n°5 and Wampler black65'overdrive ?

  • I'm really digging your demos of these cool pedals. Would this be good to use for bass work as well? I don't want to lug around my '72 Bassman 100 head/cabinet anymore (and let's face it, I'm not getting any younger)!

  • @636117 Sure, you could run a bass through this or any of the T21 Character Series. You might want to have a look at the VT Bass pedal - it's basically an Ampeg SVT in a box. A damn side lighter than a '72 Bassman, too! Cheers, BK.

  • @636117 I got the tech 21 RBI it does SVT and bassman sounds pretty well. Sound quality is top notch and the di is amazing I don't mic anything anymore

  • @636117

This is 11 months later, but I'll answer you anyway. I have a Tech 21 Blonde and yes it sounds great for bass!

  • which do you prefer for clean-ish tones, this or the california? (or any of the other character pedals for that matter) thanks!

  • Great review--it convinced me to try it out. This is an essential pedal if you live in an apartment and like to record. I've been putting a compressor in front of it, and it gives you that squishy, glassy Deluxe sound. It's not perfect (if you really listen, you can hear a little fuzzbox, transistor distortion on the low end), but for getting a Fender sound in a box it's great! I also love how, in the Blackface and Silverface settings, you have to dial the bass down, like the real thing.

  • @mfuton Spot on! And thanks for the kind words. Yes, that Bass control is all important, particularly when using it live, as I have often. Cheers, BK.

  • OMG i was searching 4 a pedal that can deliver the joyfull sounds of the vintage fender amps, and i think i got a winner!! :))

  • Hi, nice video. Can this replicate the nasty overdriven bassman, kinda like buddy guy style in 'First time I met the blues'. Thanks

  • @ar48171 It's pretty hard to do an overdriven Bassman; I know because I own one. But this pedal can park right up next to it, along with the best.

  • Would you recommend the tech21 blond for blues players?

  • Enjoyed the Demo, as a blues player i'm wondering and considering getting a blond. Would the blond be suitable for blues guitar type stuff, chicago and texas blues?. Any recommendations?

  • hey man, you use logic pro for records, but which interfase do use?? dont have latency in sound or delay???

  • In your opinion, could this be a good solution to go at the end of a pedalboard signal chain (overdrives, effects, etc.), then direct to PA? Thanks in advance!

  • @GuitarLessonsLV Short answer: Yes.

  • Hi, I wonder do you prefer Classic over Blonde or British. Also I'd like to see clean samples (character below 10-9) settings of British. Does British can give a decent clean sound with a LesPaul guitar?

  • @bkaynar Hi, the Classic is great but is more a recording tool unless you want to set and forget it. But if you're after an instant amp flavour, then the Character Series are pretty unbeatable.

The British has a reasonable clean sound, yes. But if you want super clean then you're better off with the Blonde IMO. Cheers.

  • Had a chance to try one of these out in a local shop, they're apparently not selling so they've been discounted down to $75.

No way in hell I'm NOT gonna get one at that price. They're amazing little boxes.

  • Does this shop have any more this price?

  • They may still have a British or two, but unless you're in the Central Virginia area you don't have much chance of getting one, as far as I know they don't sell through the interwebz.

Did get the Blonde though, and have been loving it so much it's kinda ridiculous.

  • Excellent Demo! Could you do a comparison or a side-by-side demo of Ethos and Blonde? Do you hear a significant difference when going direct to PA or line recording?

  • Very nice. I might pick one of these up. You're using pretty much the same recording equipment as me as well.

  • Great, entertaining demos.

This vs. the Boss FBM 1?

How good with a solid state guitar amp for practise do you reckon?

And would this be your choice for a DI box into the PA at a live gig?

  • DI to PA? Yes. This or the Ethos. Big difference in price though - you can't really go wrong with one of these. ;)

Blonde v Boss FBM1? I'm sorry, I do not own any Boss pedals, nor have I tried any lately. So I can't be much help in that department.

It will work great with a SS amp. The quality would be beyond 'practise' level, I would think.

  • dude, i love your demos, theyre great.

which of the character pedals do you think would be best for playing stuff like ccr, the eagles, clapton and classic rock stuff?

  • Thanks! I reckon this one would do the trick, actually. Clean cleans. nice middy crunch tones and balls to the wall - they're all here. The Blonde is always my first choice out of the lot.

  • thanks for the reply. but i have yet another question. between the blonde and gt2, which do you prefer?

  • Sorry, I haven't tried the GT2. One day...

  • Very good demos! I got me the Blonde for direct recording and no regrets. It does not take a DIY germanium fuzz pedal (harsh high frequency grittyness and overloading), but I still don't mind, it's the best simulation I've heard yet.

If anything then a balanced out would be a nice addition to the pedal.

PODs and other digital stuff are total loss compared to this.

  • Very cool demos and good sound!! But what is that sound at 2:33 when you turn the Mid-Poti? Sounds like a buzz...?

  • I think I clipped Logic's input with too much Mid gain. It's easy to do with these pedals because they're so sensitive. You can see the meters on the input strip peak out at exactly that point.

  • Cooll...Thanks for the demos of sansamp character series

  • damn this thing as far as overdrive tones is unbeatible so many variations of gain sick sick pedal I want one really freaking bad

  • Can this pedal work like a d-i box--straight through a PA too? Can the pedal in phase one remain clean with their speaker emulator and then, when activated, achieve a dirtier sound? Just checking.

    PS. Nice playing!

  • This clip that you're listening to - it's direct to the computer. Just like it would be direct to a PA. That's what they're primarily designed for - Direct Injection. They work OK as stomp boxes too, but they EXCEL in direct applications. Thanks for the kind words! :)

  • I really appreciate your videos of the Tech 21 "Character" series. After watching I've decided to spring for the Blonde and Liverpool (Tech 21 should give you a commission). Also props on the playing, and Sadie is a natural. I'll expect to see her on the BBC one day.

  • Thanks! Actually, after this clip was done I did establish a relationship with Tech 21, resulting in the rest of the Character Series clips and few extra pedals for moi. :) Good fun it was, too. Thanks also for the kind words for Sadie. I have a feeling she's headed in that direction as she comes from a long line of showbiz types. :)

  • Thanks for the demo, I think I'm gonna get one!

    It sounds really cool

  • No probs. Enjoy it, I have no doubt you will. ;)

  • Thanks for throwing the snippet of Ted in there, that's the setting I wanted to hear!

  • Man, I grew up to Double Live Gonzo. I've got to find that on CD somewhere..

  • Awesome demo, even though i prefer british tones over american voiced tones, this pedal seriously made me rethink and dayum the cleans on are almost perfect to a Twin Rev.

  • Yep, the clean sounds are where I think it shines most, too. Although its dirty sounds are tight as well. Moreso than the extreme dirt in the California, actually..

  • well.. im sold on the profire 610!

  • Heheh. I haven't heard that one before. M-Audio will be pleased. :)

  • Nice one Burgs, I'll av one please. Cheers, Phil

  • Love these videos. They're really excellent demonstrations of the pedals and the sounds that they can achieve. Your daughter's a sweetie as well. Very cool!

  • Thanks! We'll be back in a couple of months after I recover from this blessed surgery. Take care. BK :)

  • Thank you for a wonderful demo. This is the best equipment demo I'v I've seen. You show what it can really do and what you get. This is the kind of thing I want to see when looking at new equipment. This is a great sounding device. This is true sound shaping, not digital amp modeling (I hate amp modeling).

  • Hey man. Great videos. You're real good at guitar and bass. Good touch having your daughter introduce them! I think clean this can come quite close to the tone of Stairway to heaven. Keep rockin!

  • Hey, all those on board for a PROGRAMMABLE RACKMOUNT VERSION of these pedals can contact the folks at Tech21 with your request. Go to the Tech21 website for contact info. Good luck! BTW thanks Burgerman666 for posting videos that actually do these pedals justice!

  • Well, it certainly sounds like a Fender amp. Not like those Boss bassman and FDR...

  • Excellent demo. The pedal sells itself .... with the right player at the helm! Best Rgds, Andrew B.

  • How does it sound with bass?

    Thanks for these, Burgerman

  • tech-21.audiofanzine com/videos/index,action,play,id_video,124.html

  • Looking forward to seeing if these pedals can deliver the trademark clean creamy screaming sustain of Gilmour, Santana and May !!!

I'll be going direct into Reaper with one of these !!!

    Thanks again, Burgerman....

  • I've just ordered the British pedal and cant wait to get it. Not played for a while as band split - so this will be used through my PC for fun. Tech21 make some great Kit.

  • Really nice sounding pedal. Particularly amazing as you start with the straight-to-soundcard sound and it is pretty nasty! (no offence). The character knob almost sounds like you're moving the mic across the cone. I have Tech21's Trademark combo and it's good, but not as good as this. It gives this Fender-esque sound on one channel but with half the gain range, then the other channel is more boogie-type overdrive.

  • Just letting you know that I'll be shooting videos for the entire Character Series in the next 3 weeks. If there's anything special you want me to show, let me know ASAP.

    Cheers,

    BK

  • what're you playing, a strat? definatly sounds like it, lol. oh also, awesome high gain sounds, the name really made me understimate it, but then you cranked out that Cat Scratch Fever and i was pretty amazed, lol, awesome demo!!!!

  • Yep, she's a Fender Clapton Strat. Nothing special about it except the pickups which are handwound vintage specs by Mick Brierley. Highly recommended. I'll be shooting the remainder of the the Character Series pedals in the coming weeks. Cheers, BK.

  • I've been waiting for someone to properly demo the entire Character Series. I'll look forward (in the next 3 weeks as you say) to your reviews...

  • If there's anything special you want me to show, let me know ASAP.

    Cheers, BK

    Burgerman, Here's a wish list...

Liverpool - Brian May's searing lead guitar tone and the great sounds of the Beatles

British - Some classic Hendrix tones and a whole lotta Zep

California - The silky smooth sustaining love of Santana's Boogie tone.

Since these are hard to come by in the stores your demos have been the only way to get a good feel for these much anticipated pedals...

    Cheers... !

  • Dayum! A man needs to be a demigod to cover all of that stuff!

    OK.

    :)

  • Again, thanks very much for taking the time to go through these pedals. I'm particularly interested in knowing which one can get that thick, ballsy Eric Johnson lead tone, going direct with no guitar amps. Thanks!

  • With a strat, no less!

  • Are you going to include the VT Bass?

  • Indeed I am sir. I'm a mediocre bass twanger at best but you'll get the idea. I've briefly tried that pedal with guitar too and it rips! Remember Get Yer Ya Yas Out? That's where I'm coming from. Me thinks the VT Bass might soon develop a 6 string following also. First videos go up this weekend. Thanks.

  • nice demo.

does the distortion cleans up when guitar volume rolled back?

    thanks.

  • I tried the California and thought it was garbage. I couldn't get one useable tone out of it other than clean. Any Gain setting was bad.

I was going for kind of a SRV thing, and it didn't come close.

  • Comment removed

  • Maybe that's because SRV didn't play a Boogie.

    Duh!

  • I didn't have a chance to deomo one but was told this pedal would giive me that tone.

  • he actually did play a boogie before. he used one for awhile and was going to use it to tour with Bowie. He orginally was interested in them because they looked like a Dumble ODS.

  • Very nice! Thanks for posting.

Hope you can/will test the rest of the character pedals the same way like this one and post them here.

Been looking for a decent sounding D.I. box or four. :-)

    Thanks!

  • Thank you! :) I wish I could test them all. See, the thing is, all of these pedals I've demoed, some 60-70 odd; I've PAID for them all. And it's getting expensive. I can't really afford any more! So your/my only hope is if Tech 21 see the sense in bestowing me with the other four. Then we'll all be happy. :)

  • Thanks for a great thorough demo ! I had kind of gravitated towards to the California- but your demo has definitely convinced me to to take another look at the Blonde. My take is it really does sound better direct than through the amp.

  • Funny you should talk about the Californian. It's the model I tried first and the clean sounds in it were stellar. Sadly though, the unit was pre-sold and I had to reluctantly give it back to the store owner who lent it to me to demo. But the message is to all of you guys who want to investigate these boxes for their clean sounds: Try the Californian too! And yes, I too think that they're far more effective run direct. Thanks for writing. :)

  • I saw a good price for the Blonde on eBay and went for it. I figured it most closely approximated the clean of the amps I'm using- JC-90, Roland Blues Cube, Fender Stage 112se, Fender Concert. I plan on lugging this to rehearsals instaed of a combo, and having it in the gigbag for a backup-- Thanks

  • What's your stage setup for the Blonde? Are you running a 1/4 " unbalanced cable from the Blonde to the board, or do you have a DI box mounted with the Blonde, and then run an XLR to the board?

  • Guitar > drive and mod pedals > Blonde > delay pedal > 1/4" unbalanced to DI > FOH board > back to monitor desk > wedges > rock :)

  • Which/what DI and FOH did you use?

Thanks again, really enjoy watching/hearing this demo, the best I've heard/seen.

  • Great stuff as usual Burgs. So versatile. Great Pedal. More Guitar shots please. Paul.

  • GREAT GREAT DEMO BRETT, I love the first setting, great pedal!

  • Great demo! How about a demo of into a guitar amp as well just so we know how it sounds there too?
