I grew up on Clinton St. and went to DeWitt Clinton School. My grandfather was the bridge operator and used to let me ring the bell (hand pull ropes then) and let me run the bridge controls. Lots of memories!
I was just saying back when I was a kid in Lockport the bridges went up, and there was a staircase you could walk up to cross across the brigde while in action.
