  • While Anthony is not my favorite of the Irish Tenors, I will (grudgingly) admit he IS the best singer of them all. I love his voice and pitch, and even though John McDermott is my favorite, none of them could have done as well with this song as Anthony does. His voice really makes these lyrics come alive.

  • Man, I love the Irish Tenors, especially when it was Anthony, Ronan, and Finbarr (Finbar?) and this is my all time favorite traditional Irish song :)

  • He is MUCH more handsome (and charming) than Charlie Sheen, for God's sake!!

  • He's not as famous as the likes as Pavarotti but that's not to say he isn't as good. Great singer and song lol

  • This is a truly heroic and tragic story, epic. Also tragic but not heroic is the selling out of this hard-won freedom to the European Union. It is hard to imagine a people who struggled so long and so valiantly, crawling into the EU and then spending themselves into oblivion. Almost as tragic as the United States of America selling our their heroes.

  • Awesome from Ireland

  • he looks like charlie sheen

  • looks like charlie sheen

  • The microphone was unnecessary for the "great tenors" of the Golden Period of Singing.

LISTEN to RICHARD CROOKS sing "The Holy City" or JOSEPH SCHMIDT - "Dein ist mein ganzes herz," on You Tube, just to mention a FEW real tenors of THAT era.

  • You are correct that the great tenors of the golden period needed no amplification for their voices to be heard in the theater. But this is also true of every tenor who sings in a professional opera house today. The technique allows the voice to be heard, without amplification, even with a large orchestra and chorus.

Anthony Kearns' microphone is not for the benefit of the audience in the hall in which he was singing. It is for OUR benefit! Without it we would not have this recording.

  • Anthony Kearns is going to be singing for a benefit concert on March 18th at St. Joseph's College, Patchogue, ny.!!!!!!!

  • this makes me cry every time I hear it, it,s so tragic, but a beautiful song

  • I think I forgot to post. I went to Willaimsport PA to see him in person. He missed his flight and was very ill but went on anyway. Didn't sing last verse of Oh Sola Mio that wasn't too bad but NO GRACE I though I would die. I'' try again when in Area.

  • Just came from concert in Williamsport PA. He wasen't feeling good and didn't sing Grace.Disaapponted but still great

  • i love all irish tenors they are all my favorites

  • Such a lovely song. Just a minor correction. Grace and Joseph were married in

Kilmainham Geol shortly before his exacution. I got to visit Kilmainham and had the

thrill of meeting Anthony of a street in Dublin a short time later.

  • This is unreal, what a voice. This is my favourite version of Grace. It is like Joseph Plunkett himself is singing.

  • Frank and Sean O'Meara wrote this beautiful song

  • Does anyone know who originally wrote the song?

  • @Vincenzo0786

Lyrics are by Frank and Sean O'Meara

  • Anthony is such a great story teller, with his voice he's hard to beat. this and his version of 'she moved through the fair' are my favorite irish tenor songs. thanks for puttin this up mach!

  • uu got that right

  • I think this song is so beautiful

  • Great singer indeed. He presents Ireland's struggle for freedoms so well.

This song is so fitting to all irish from north to south, east to west. It is a loved tune.

Unfortunatelly, the strugglr continues. Thank you Anthony!

  • I could lister to him sing all day - just great.

  • Why shouldn't he be knighted by the Queen, if you consider that a singer should be judged by his/her singing ability, not by his popularity or the amount of money he can make?

  • A great tenor of the highest calibre, combining talent with naturalness.

  • If you are not Irish this will escape you. You have to be Irish to really appreciate and understand the real meaning od this.

  • @akgwatts

I must be Irish (I know I was several generations ago) because I have felt this song in my soul ever since I first heard it.

  • Anthony appeared at Mechanics Hall, Worcester, MA and he was stunning. His voice is unequaled anywhere. It's been kissed by angels. And Anthony has himself kissed the Blarney Stone. A wonderful performer!

  • This Sunday come enjoy Anthony Kearns- The Irish Tenor.

Concert Cost $50.00 per adult, $30.00 for children 12 + under and seniors 65+.

    Meet and Greet reception-$25.00

Holy Cross Church on Genesee St in Dewitt NY proudly welcomes Anthony Kearns at 3pm April 25, 2010.

  • Absolutely stunning performance. I can't imagine anyone could hear this and not be moved.

  • Good on you Tony. Good on ya!

  • Thumbs up, 5 *****Anthony! Keep up the great old Irish Songs, and ofcourse carry on the Kearns name. God Bless. Long Live Ireland!!

  • Sorry Momntry Silence meant to give your comment the thumbs up not thumbs down. x

  • Grace Gifford perfectly understood what the cause of Irish freedom was about so the song is slightly wrong in intimating that she didn't. She remained to her dying day an Irish republican. Committed, strong and resolute. Ireland is lucky to have people like Plunkett and Grace Gifford. When one consider the self seekers running our country now it would sadden anyone but the most cynical. Beautiful song and wonderful woman......Grace Gifford.

  • Anthony's voice combined with the french horns and the true story behind it....I'm crying as I write this!

  • Galway Rose1: Anthony Kearns is great!!

A Blessed St. Patrick's Day to all on You Tube and everywhere.

  • I love this song. I never thought for a minute that it would be song in this way.

Really brings a tear to the eye.

    God Bless

  • Anthony truly FEELS this song... and those exquisite "grace notes" (no pun intended) ... how ineffably brilliant.

  • That is one of the best renditions of any song I've ever heard, anyone not moved by that aint human. Quite Brilliant

  • Breathtaking

  • i cry every time i hear this beautiful ballad - my favourite song of all time probably. heartbreakingly performed by kearns

  • That really was beautiful

  • Wonderfull and thought provoking.

    Louden.

  • What a Voice!!

  • Voices that make me cry, Bjoerling, Pavarotti, Kearns.

  • Brilliant video

  • I always felt that Anthony Kearns was the best of the three Irish tenors. He has a wonderfully smooth tone and is incredibly controlled and musical.

  • AMAZING

  • This was my grand parents wedding and funerals songs, 1son and daughter of Ireland. Never forgotten xxxxxxxx

  • Fabulous just fabulous, Anthony couldn't have done a better job, This man is so gifted, I could listen to him day an nite.

  • This song is great I agree a brings tears to the eyes. Anthony does a great job singing this song.

  • Anthony is one of the best tenors alive today!

  • Very beautiful song by a great singer that tell s a true story. Touches the heart!

    Tom in TN. USA

  • The first time I heard this was on PBS, and I called the station and actually spoke with John McDermott who told the that it was a true story. I stil love to hear Anthony sing it, even though I always cry.

  • Just listened to this again for the umpteenth time. Can never get enough of Athony Kearns and Grace. Thanks again Machree01.

  • Yes, this is a real tear jerker, knowing the story behind it. Kearns sings it in such a way that he pulls the heart strings of the listener. He's awesome...the sound is a tiny bit off from his lip movements...but this is a small thing. He's awesome and machree has done it again!

  • What can i say, its all been said, i never heard of Anthony Kearns, so I googled it, and ended up at the ,"Princes Grace of Monaco, irish music", + other sites of course, He is a true Irish singer, he might not be a favourite of the young ones of today, That was a tear jerker of a song.

    Thanks for uploading it.

  • Bravo Anthony! This man does not have the recognition he deserves.

  • So much meaning! So many Irish died, there was only a slim chance that they would come home

  • Another gem from Machree01. This song was written by Frank and Sean O'Meara - credit where credit is due.

  • poetry was never really my thing, but this song REALLY stresses the emotions held up in one desperate man in a sweet, beautiful, poetic song. It also helps that it was sung perfectly.

  • It's ALWAYS sung perfectly when HE sings it!!

  • Forgot to ask. Does anybody know how to enlarge this video into a full size? Thanks!

  • click the button on the bottom right of the video with the small square indented in a larger square.

  • good we would rather hear the irish tenors becuase they sing it more beutiful !!!!!!!!!!

  • What a stunning version of this emotional and emotive song. It brings a lump to my throat.

  • i think this is the most beautiful version of this song i have heard.i've heard several.he has a beautiful voice.he,ronan tynan, and john williams are best of the tenors.there have 5-6 singers who have sang in the group.

  • This is such a beautiful song

  • sad song, ppl should look up the story behind the song, then u will see how beautiful this song really is.

  • Good as ever.

  • I grew up listening to Mr. Kearns too. Been a huge fan since the first PBS special (And I;m only 19 right now)

He has such an amazing voice and is such a kind, down-to-earth person. A true Godsend, this song never fails to bring a tear to my eye. Greatest voice I've ever heard

(Praying for a long awaited solo cd now.)

I had the pleasure of hearing him sing this live in concert one time, it was an amazing treat!

    God bless you Mr. Kearns!

  • Anthony Kearns is the greatest singer I've heard in my lifetime and I still say he is the re-incarnation of Mario Lanza, only better so as if that was possible. I, as you are, am desperately waiting for a cd forthcoming. Having seen him many times in person, he's beautiful. His voice, his personna AND his face! Some people got it all!!

  • I too have been listening to him since i was young. I'd love to see him live. Thanks for posting this video :) if i had the concert on dvd rather than vhs i'd upload some more videos ;)

  • Robert White's version. No less beautiful. God Bless you, sleep peacefully, poet and hero.

  • I have been listening to Anthony since i was a little girl! all of his songs are soo beatiful, you can never get sick of them!

  • He came to my school two days ago, and he is even better in person! He sang Danny Boy, Alive, Alive, O, and a few other songs. Hearing him makes me wish I was a Tenor instead of a Bass!

  • Your a Fish???!?!? :O

  • absolutely beautiful. I wish i could sing.

  • This song and performance is Anthonys best.

  • One really beautiful version is Ciaran Sheehan's

    (The Phantom),in his CD "Ciaran".

  • Anthony does a beautiful rendition of this song. It did sound like it was based on a true story. Sad but powerful.

  • I don't want to hurt anybody's feeling, but he's my favorite Irish tenor (Ok, I did not hear all of Ireland's tenors).

  • your not hurting mine, anthony is great singer, thanks for the comment.

  • @machree01 Cannot thank you enough for this absolutely beautiful film of Anthony K. singing Grace. Makes me want to weep, every time I watch him and hear him sing. He's absolutely fantastic. Have heard other versions, but this is hands down the best. Thanks Machree01. Great job.

  • If you are lucky you can listen this song(and others) live in a dublin's pub!!! :D

  • The Pub is called The Celt in Talbot Street, he does a great version of Danny Boy in the Celt,

  • I love Irish music, & the Irish Tenors are among the very best.

  • Thanks Machree this is a beautiful version.

  • This is my favourite rendering of this song.Anthony Kearns voice suits it perfectly.

  • Brilliant man one man who does a cracking version apart from JimMcCann is Tommy Byrne of The Wolfetones.

I like Anthony Kearns version too pure genius.

    James

  • Beautiful version of the most poignant story to emerge from the aftermath of the 1916 Rising. My personal favourite though is that of the late great Derek McCormack (Barleycorn and The Fureys) RIP Derek.

  • Yes forgot about Derek had the pleasure of seen him singing Caven Girl live with the Fureys and of course Paul Furey who passed away too.

RIP to Derek too, I have loads of his cds from the Barleycorn days to his Legend Of Irish Folk cds.

    Missed too.

  • great version!

  • Thanks so much for this! The quintessential version of what has to be one of the most beautifully tragic stories ever! Unbelievably well done by Anthony Kearns! Wonderful!
