In my experience it seems as if condoms ARE the contraception of choice, but they aren't used as commonly with long-term couples. Two people hook up at a bar or something, condom. Two people have been dating for a year, condom -- but maybe not every time. Even so, condoms are far and away more popular than oral contraceptives, IUDs or patches/shots (not all of which are available over there).
I don't condemn anyone, but abortion is murder. Can't whitewash it or softsoap it. A child's life is extinquished because the woman/man did not want to deal with the consequences of their actions. American society is big on being responsible-unless it is too inconvenient. It really is simple, if you don't want a baby, can't support a baby - don't have sex. We are not animals, self restraint is possible. Jus sayin.
@WhatNow858 If you are not going to have sex, then you won't have babies. If you use birth control and have sex, you won't have babies. Either way, no babies. It's stupid to be celebant instead of using birth control. If you need to have an abortion, then have one. Either way (celibacy/birth control) the baby would have never been born.
2 scenarios, same couple: A baby is aborted. Sex doesn't happen. A child was never meant to be born in both cases. Does it matter?
@WhatNow858 That is a really, really narrow-minded way to look at this issue. It's not always about convenience or abstinence or choice. Putting aside the biological argument, what if I DIDN'T want to have sex? What if I was walking to my car one night after work, got pulled into someone's van, and was held down and raped? Am I supposed to pay for their actions, too? Many women whose rapes result in pregnancies that fear the stigma of abortion commit suicide. Think hard about that.
The world population needs to go down. Duh, so tell the indians chinese and africans to stop having kids. And dont criticize one of the most advanced countries on the planet sweetheart.
@HogansDisciple africans, chinese, and indians are different in this situation because they have room and and lots land on their country and can afford to have as many kids as they want. As oppose to the Japanese, which japan is sitting on a tiny island constantly building with little room to grow in population.
@meika9 Good point. But the U.S. and Canada have plenty of room and population is only increased through immigration. When your society reaches a certain point then the population will know its time to slow down reproduction. But, places were they are still living more primative and in poverty especially they simply dont know better. Or it is thier master plan to flood the earth with thier own kind. lol
I believe when you say you are "pro choice" it isn't entirely true, because the choice between life and death is not given to the living human being who is yet to enter the world in a matter of months. Maybe this fact resides in the conscience of those who say they are actively "pro choice," but then say ,when it comes to them personally, they don't think they would actually abort a CHILD--not pregnancy, as many are wont to try to dehumanize so as to make it easy on the conscience, but a child.
I also lived in Japan in the late 1990s and knew several Japanese nationals that had abortions. It was thought no different than a trip to the doctor for a cold. Very common practice. Not really something kept secret either. Birth control pills were just starting to be common as well.
Sadly this is something the man in the equation could help with. Condoms are the simplest form of birth control. Also I think we need to look at women that need or want to work. A lot of Japanese women are expected to give up their careers once they start having children.
I live in the Southern part of the U.S so to me abortion is like a big no no. Seeing as the south is the bible belt of the U.S. Actually it seems more of a taboo for a teen to get an abortion then it would be for them to carry the child and be a teen parent. I also can't imagine schools being empty cuz there aren't any children to fill them.
As a male I have great respect towards females. Whether it be from being objectified from media everywhere they go, carrying life in their womb for around 9 months(Nothing wrong with it, but it isn't easy), or from being forced to face pregnancy not only emotionally but physically.
Women are the ones being pressured into abortion, and many times it is from their male counterparts. Women must also carry their creation everywhere they go. As for a male, that is not the case.
Back around the 1900's and prior, Japan was greatly a farming nation. So people were having many children so they could have helping farmhands. After Japan became industrialized, the birth rate dropped quite a bit from an average of maybe around 6 kids to 1 or 2. This issue was impacted again by the women's rights movement. Women were more career-driven rather than family-driven, so in some cases, couples weren't having children at all. That’s why the birth rate has had such a dramatic decrease.
i'm currently doing a research analysis on abortion in japan, do you mind if i use this video as additional information? What you're saying is very interesting. And it's good to get personal perspective instead of reading statistics online.

@mshalley17 You can get hair straighteners and relaxers in Japan. Ironically, the "punch-perm" is a style among the teenage biker gangs. So it's the opposite in Japan.
My boyfriend is Japanese and he feels the extreme diets women do in Japan is part of the birth rate problem. He thinks aborting all the babies that could have parents who can't have themselves. He feels that majority of Japan is so focused on imagine they forget what really matters? His family is big he is the fourth surving child of 6. he is the youngest because his baby sister (who would be 22 now like me) died of an enlarged heart or something. also his older brother was a twin.
a complication that can arise with having an abortion is possible infertility. I believe it's because small foreign objects may remain in the uterus, and foreign objects in the uterus discourage implantation. and maybe the infertility among Japanese women is caused by so many abortions?
i guess its a consequence from such a expensive life style country to have low birth rates, and if abortion is legalized than it means even less ppl ll be born, plus it is very know that japan is becoming more and more a country of eldery ppl, eldery cant have childrens :/~
kids are expensive and the economy has always been tight on a island.male dominated culture too. i guess mamasans have to cover for all this hence the enculturation pressure on the girls... I am grateful abortion is not my habit. poor babes.
Its so sad that their is even such a thing as abortion. People think its okay to end the life of a child just because it hasn't been born yet. That child could of done wonderful things to help people but never got the chance because its mother payed a doctor to kill it. If the baby is lucky its not killed in a late term abortion.
Well, the Japanese are entitled to their beliefs. The world is overpopulated as is,and in the long run...children not being born via abortion is a good thing. People get all sappy over it all the time, but a fetus isn't even a sentient being until they hit a certain time period.I do think birth control is important, but maybe they're more conservative about sex or something so they don't promote condoms as much? That's interesting...
I also live in Japan. And I think, that is a very conservative country. There are a lot of taboos, where neither a single mother nor a divorce woman is accepted. Single mothers and their children usually suffer rejection from sociaty. So parents are very strict with their kids and make their daughters have an abortion if they aren't married.
Also, adaption is never a choice for couples that can't have babies. Is not part of the culture.
them the teens will know more of what is expected of them. so really it more of the children needing to see their parents more and talking with them instead of having just the teachers teach kids this stuff. im sure this is only part of the problem though and that there is more to it...

. Current tv did a special on the birth rate in Japan. I think the title is "Robot Nation". It doesn't discus abortion, but more about the population issue.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Japan has a population problem. Their cities are very densely populated and there is very little living space available. If you compare a typical living space in Japan with that of the US it is much smaller. Having negative population growth at this time is NOT a problem for Japan, but rather a blessing. If they can get their population down to a more manageable level all the better. I wish the United States was as smart about its population, but oh no, we have to have 3-4 children per family...
Historically and culturally speaking Japanese do not have a moral aversion to abortion. In fact, many small towns still have ceremonies and festivals to pray for aborted children so that their ghosts do not come back to haunt them. Many of the scary movies, stories, and anime in Japan are based on this myth (i.e. the ghost in your toilet, the possesed little girl doll, etc.)
This is not a christian-based country so you cannot expect the same values. It is not wrong, just different.
@ranmachan4 So they know that it’s wrong to abort children and to make themselves feel better they have festivals for them. Are you kidding me???? It is wrong and based on their actions; they also know that it is wrong. That’s like a person saying, "I'm going to kill that man over there because he's an inconvenience, but I'll pray for him once he's dead." What kind of sense is that? It's not different, just wrong.
lol I wonder if i'm the one who told you about Around 40.
In regards to teen parenting "Jyuu yon sai no haha"(14 year old mother), Is a drama focused on a teen parent and her stigmas.
I, myself, am pro-choice. I don't find it surprising that Japan has a high abortion rate as its directly related to their population issue. The two go hand in hand, not to mention other factors that I don't have time to discuss here.
also if you're a pregnant teen you get looked down upon so it is kept a secret, but usually it spreads anyway and some girls and their family resort to moving somewhere else for a fresh start. if you get found out by a new friend i believe its seen as a betrayal, but that I'm not so sure about.
coming from a Japanese friend, he stated that when it comes to dating, either the guy or girl would actually ask their partner whether or not they want to use a condom...most time they usually don't. a condom is the last thing on their minds and the guy always asks the girl if she is okay - meaning if he could have possibly knocked her up.
As for condoms in Japan it would seem that they are seen more as sexual enhancers rather then contraceptive devices, hence there is a store right in the middle of harajuku called condom mania!
And I am yet to personally see a pregnant woman there (though it could be due to their size).
Hi there. How were you able to find an orphanage in your area? I have tried time and time again to volunteer at an orphanage around the Tokyo area. Peace
Interesting topic. I guess adoption is considered taboo in Japan. Most couples will hide the fact the child is adopted. Also most children living in orphanages aren't available for adoption because they are expected to carry on the family name.
i agree with alot of the people saying that the reason could be lack of care they can provide for the child. there are already too many children with out parents so why keep bringing them into this world to risk being without someone to care for them. i say be smart before having sex but if a child is conceived then abortion is only okay if its really early like w/ in the first month. but if someone keeps having multiple abortions then clearly they need sex ed.
I also think it's better to abort than bring a child in for more certainty of a very disadvantaged life, moe than would be if the parent(s) were ready. So many kids are already here to adopt! Sometimes it turns around and the child actually gets a good/great life but you know... They dont give money to young single parents do they? like here in england teenage moms get benefits
if condoms are unpopular then would there be a large amount of people with stds? being a single mother in japan is taboo, so that could be part of it. i would think that with the large sense of responsibility in japan there would be more willing parents.
I have heard and read about a lot of the things that you have said. A drama to check out if you are interested is one called "14 Sai no Haha". It caused a big stink when it came out but was very popular because of the controversy of abortion and teen parenting. Great topic.
And your hair looks absolutely fabulous! The style also compliments your face! Whatever you are doing please share it with the rest of us!
I hadn't heard the bit about so many women being sterile before. I wonder if this will ease the acceptance of Korea-Japan and China-Japan relations (In my Japanese history class it was said that a Chinese or Korean bride was frowned upon) They better get on to making those babies!
Japan is like a pitbull, they're days when that pit bull is the coolest creature on the planet, then they're days you look at that animal, and it watches you with eyes that says; 'if you come near me i'll rip off your head.' Then you go inside and play kick the cat with kitty. True story, but that's Japan, some days it seems cool, then other days, you're not sure what you're looking at.
ABORT! ABORT! ABORT!! whew!- that was close!: japan was cut off from the rest of the world for a long time, thats why there culture is so unique. they have not been under the strong influence of the "church"(uprise in roman-catholoism) so the mentality of right and wrong is different in there eyes. they dont have the programed views of abortion, and sex as we, but there culture is so unique that it still holds strong moral values- weird huh!?
I don't think that's really the case because even in catholic societies around the world there have been entries of aborted fetuses found under convents. I'll have to look at it again so don't quote me......0_o. But the reality I find very endearing about Japan is that at least they find the abortion of a child more humane than being a horrible parent unable to take care of it or ashamed. Again, right and wrong is relative in any society
about a year ago i read that many women in the US have abortions for the same reasons. its not mainly teenage girls, but women in their late 20s and 30s who feel like they cant provide properly for their child so they abort. i guess that can be a common feeling for any culture.
Japan is a very developed country. maybe that is the reason why the population growth is slowing down. Places like India and Mexico are devloping countries with a larger scale of povert but their populations seem to be on the increase yearly. I dont know why. Maybe the Japanese can afford abortions and other preventative measures like people in unlike people in Mexico or India for exmaple.
I did not know that the population was on the decline but Japan is not the only place Sweden's population is mostly made up of people in their 40's and nearing retirment. For some reason reproduction is low there. I could only guess in Japan's case its mostly about culture, maybe many Janpanese are moving overseas what i have seen is that people who do not have kids are usually too busy establishing themselves with a career and by the time its time to have a family their in their 40's.
Very interesting. As fast as Japan is depopulating, the trend can be seen in most industrialized countries <---are we still even using this term? The only thing keeping the United States from losing it's total population is the fresh supply of immigrants that come into the county. Otherwise, our population woes would look a little more like those in Europe.
"If you can support that child you abort that child..a simple matter of fact.. isn't it interesting, the decisions people make when not influenced by religious and social indoctrination?
Japans population is dropping but isn't it over populated at present? Because of automation we will no longer need a working class.
Abortion is wrong because people have had a lifetime of being told its wrong.
in the next couple of years...japans population is gonna be low...and the people have to cut time to get off work early to make whoopie...and cutting hours in these economic times of destructuion aren't gonna be so good for them...
Some of my GF's told me there is a popular belief that the aborted child will be given to a more able family by a higher power. So it's a necessary sadness, but the child will have another chance. Also I would visit temples often, In Enoshima there was a temple that women would leave a figurine to honor the aborted child. This also allows the child the chance to be born again. My GF's are Japanese so I figured they would know ... Ja mata
In short the japanese population is getting smaller and smaller every year and the old people are not being replaced by babies at a rate high enough to have a stable working class.
In my experience it seems as if condoms ARE the contraception of choice, but they aren't used as commonly with long-term couples. Two people hook up at a bar or something, condom. . Current tv did a special on the birth rate in Japan. I think the title is "Robot Nation". It doesn't discus abortion, but more about the population issue.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
Japan has a population problem.

It is not wrong, just different.
ranmachan4 2 years ago 23

The two go hand in hand, not to mention other factors that I don't have time to discuss here.
winDragon79 2 years ago
also if you're a pregnant teen you get looked down upon so it is kept a secret, but usually it spreads anyway and some girls and their family resort to moving somewhere else for a fresh start. if you get found out by a new friend i believe its seen as a betrayal, but that I'm not so sure about.
cece1sakura 2 years ago
coming from a Japanese friend, he stated that when it comes to dating, either the guy or girl would actually ask their partner whether or not they want to use a condom...most time they usually don't. a condom is the last thing on their minds and the guy always asks the girl if she is okay - meaning if he could have possibly knocked her up.
cece1sakura 2 years ago
As for condoms in Japan it would seem that they are seen more as sexual enhancers rather then contraceptive devices, hence there is a store right in the middle of harajuku called condom mania!
And I am yet to personally see a pregnant woman there (though it could be due to their size).

Hi there. How were you able to find an orphanage in your area? I have tried time and time again to volunteer at an orphanage around the Tokyo area. Peace
khalilahinjapan 2 years ago 2
Interesting topic. I guess adoption is considered taboo in Japan. Most couples will hide the fact the child is adopted. Also most children living in orphanages aren't available for adoption because they are expected to carry on the family name.
slh1900 2 years ago
When it comes to condoms, apparently, a man will carry one in his wallet because it looks "cool" but they don't use 'em.
Oh and Off topic: Girl your hair is on point. I love it.
MistressTarantula 2 years ago 3
i agree with alot of the people saying that the reason could be lack of care they can provide for the child. there are already too many children with out parents so why keep bringing them into this world to risk being without someone to care for them. i say be smart before having sex but if a child is conceived then abortion is only okay if its really early like w/ in the first month. but if someone keeps having multiple abortions then clearly they need sex ed.

I watched a documentary about japan and how there are no kids and it was talking about the effects it will have on the country in the future
citygirl000 2 years ago
wait they see condoms us "taboo" but aborting and killing a human life is "okay"
citygirl000 2 years ago
I also think it's better to abort than bring a child in for more certainty of a very disadvantaged life, moe than would be if the parent(s) were ready. So many kids are already here to adopt! Sometimes it turns around and the child actually gets a good/great life but you know... They dont give money to young single parents do they? like here in england teenage moms get benefits
Scurvyforall 2 years ago
if condoms are unpopular then would there be a large amount of people with stds? being a single mother in japan is taboo, so that could be part of it. i would think that with the large sense of responsibility in japan there would be more willing parents.

Since many Japanese view condoms as taboo !!

StarlightLullaby 2 years ago 2
Aren't any wives that aren't Japanese frowned upon in Japan??
I thought Asian wives were more acceptable than western at least, right?

The2ndKrezzz3 2 years ago 2
I don't think that's really the case because even in catholic societies around the world there have been entries of aborted fetuses found under convents. I'll have to look at it again so don't quote me......0_o. But the reality I find very endearing about Japan is that at least they find the abortion of a child more humane than being a horrible parent unable to take care of it or ashamed. Again, right and wrong is relative in any society
intro2the1 2 years ago 4
well in my mind im right and society is wrong :). im sure those fetisis found under convents belong to the nuns( yea i said it)
The2ndKrezzz3 2 years ago
about a year ago i read that many women in the US have abortions for the same reasons. its not mainly teenage girls, but women in their late 20s and 30s who feel like they cant provide properly for their child so they abort. i guess that can be a common feeling for any culture.
sofloverpyro 2 years ago 3
@The2ndKrezzz3 abortion is new its not part of there traditional culture. in every culture a women is shuned for having kids and not being married

ZROD84 2 years ago 2
I did not know that the population was on the decline but Japan is not the only place Sweden's population is mostly made up of people in their 40's and nearing retirment. For some reason reproduction is low there. I could only guess in Japan's case its mostly about culture, maybe many Janpanese are moving overseas what i have seen is that people who do not have kids are usually too busy establishing themselves with a career and by the time its time to have a family their in their 40's.
ZROD84 2 years ago
i would love to go there and help out the popluation :)
The2ndKrezzz3 2 years ago 6
Very interesting. As fast as Japan is depopulating, the trend can be seen in most industrialized countries <---are we still even using this term? The only thing keeping the United States from losing it's total population is the fresh supply of immigrants that come into the county. Otherwise, our population woes would look a little more like those in Europe.
RueBroadway 2 years ago 4
"If you can support that child you abort that child..a simple matter of fact.. isn't it interesting, the decisions people make when not influenced by religious and social indoctrination?
Japans population is dropping but isn't it over populated at present? Because of automation we will no longer need a working class.
Abortion is wrong because people have had a lifetime of being told its wrong.
AuShawster 2 years ago
in the next couple of years...japans population is gonna be low...and the people have to cut time to get off work early to make whoopie...and cutting hours in these economic times of destructuion aren't gonna be so good for them...
ohmiyahchubber 2 years ago
Some of my GF's told me there is a popular belief that the aborted child will be given to a more able family by a higher power. So it's a necessary sadness, but the child will have another chance. Also I would visit temples often, In Enoshima there was a temple that women would leave a figurine to honor the aborted child. This also allows the child the chance to be born again. My GF's are Japanese so I figured they would know ... Ja mata

they need to send their women to Africa. the Chinese need to stop killing the babies and send them to Africa
Azzaiel 2 years ago
Why doesn't Japan want more babies?? :(
zoomboomafoo 2 years ago
they are foolish, they have subscribed to the gene purity ethos of hitler, and from tht their genes have begun to turn off.
purity = extinction (pay attention white people).
what these fools fail to realize is that they need to rejoin the source. to save their genes and not kill off whole bloodlines in genetic suicide.
they have to intentionally mix with other races. your culture may change a bit, but your genes will live on.
instead of both genes and culture dying.
Azzaiel 2 years ago
In short the japanese population is getting smaller and smaller every year and the old people are not being replaced by babies at a rate high enough to have a stable working class.
intro2the1 2 years ago
that is a great question ... they sorta stopped populating, which kinda sux!!
