Mike keneally coined the phrase,"controlled chaos",when describing some of zappas guitar improvisational linesAnd I agree 100%.A great description.Combined with vince on drums,,it was controlled chaos at its best and if you ask a mediocraty musician such as anthrax or most of them, they won't even get it.
It is ludicrous listening to these guys commenting on Zappa. It is like preschoolers talking about Beethoven or Mozart. They should try to be half the artist he was. But then if they did they might not make as much money as they do... Never mind.
Some of these guys know what they're talking about, dude. Sure, they are not the virtuoso musicians he was, but they were great too. Listen to what they're saying. They have a pretty damn good idea what Zappa was about.
What a stupid list. Whoever put it together should be taken out the back and beaten with a phonebook. Majority of the 'bands' in that list are complete bollocks. And who decided all of those metal guys are the authority on Zappa? I guess it is VH1...
I agree with that about Motley Crue, RHCP, and JA not being greater. But don't say shit about AIC. They're another great band who never quite got the recognition they deserved, much like Zappa.
Fair enough, Alice in Chains are totally worthy of their high-ranking. It's a bit odd ranking bands in order drawing from all these different decades. I would compare 60's bands to other 60's bands, 70's bands to others from that decade, etc. The music industry keeps changing, which doesn't exactly make for a level playing field.
People who compile top 100 lists of Greatest Artists or albums or whatnot usualy know fuck all about music which is why they compile lists, as dear departed uncle Frank once sang about music journalists that they should
the three things that suprised me were the fact that Yes was all the way up at 94, they were much better than that, Zappa should be in the low twenties, and so should Rush, and why the hell is pearl jam at 21, they should be in the fourties at best
the list is absolutely terrible, whoever thinks otherwise has no god damn fucking taste. even though zappa's better than pretty much every single artist on this list, he's not a hard rock musician. and i have no idea what black sabbath is doing in front of hendrix. this list is a joke
That's what he was. You don't have to like everything he did as a musician, but he will be remembered as one.
And again: This list doesn't make sense at all, some of them could be positioned side by side, if you like, Listening to music is a matter of taste, lets think about that.
36 my balls the greatest composer of the 20th century bar none....like that one cat said if you're not a musican you're not even gonna get it.....Beethoven for rock
Nirvana? Guns and Roses? the sex pistols? what the fuck are all these bands doing that high up on the list, I mean, they even beat Rush, f-ing Rush, this list is horrible, and why is Pink Floyd in the list, there not hard rock, God! and Frank doesn't deserve to be on this list, he's to good.
Nirvana's music is better and will be remembered long after Rush's. If that doesn't answer your question, along with the rest of the bands, I don't know what will.
Despite my name I love all kinds of Rock, not just grunge, and Rush is indeed one of the Greats. But my point is technical skill and musicianship equals not the power of songs that ring throughout entire generations' ears.
thanks, not to detract from Rush, but Kurt Cobain and the likes of him are still being talked about to this day, and he's been dead for 13 years, you know? They were just that memorable
this fucking pisses me off nine inch nails beat pantera and slayer and metallica is number 2 they should be at least in the top 3 what fuck vh1 u piss me off u stupid bitches
Man, this clip is almost a perfect example of what's wrong with VH1 "list" shows. (Except that they're interviewing people I recognize instead of annoying young hipsters for a change, that is.) But all the quick-cut fragmentary editing doesn't let you get a real sense of either the music they're discussing or the commentary. Boo VH1.
experimental? bizzare jazzbo? wont get unless yr a musician? unstructured? get the fuck outta here---- who are all these fuckin idiots anyway and why have they been asked to talk about frank? totally clueless
Say what you want about this list, but I watched it when I was a kid (had a broken leg) and discovered a whole bunch of bands I would not have, such as Bad Brains and MC5
most of lists like this are bullshit. Take Rolling Stone's list of the 100 greatest guitarists... The fact that they placed Stevie Ray Vaughn at #7 totally kills this that lists credibility...
I don't aperieciate that list very much, i don't believe that you can rank guitarist, perhaps you could put them in "leagues" or somethin' like that, but you can't really place someone on a spot on some list.
I can tell by your name that anything I say will not convince you, so I'm not going to try and argue, but Rush has 3 astounding musicians, their skills reach far beyond any band member of Nirvana. I'm not saying Nirvana is bad, I listen to them, their just not as talented as Rush, and this list sucks
To me, the most listenable album of all time is London Calling. Frank Zappa is by far the more technical, wittier, and the most prolific of the two, but to me, London Calling is a perfect record. I don't even think Zappa could taouch that record. But, Frank Zappa would be number two on the list, for sure.

The Next day, captainfink was hospitalized with 3,4987 broken bones in his body. Nobody really knows what happened, although some people speculate that Frank Zappa's ingenuous music caused so much damage.
inokpati a psychopath with a Multiple Personality Disorders, he has about 8 other names he uses also inok your a fucking little cockroach hiding behind your computer the world knows you are insane tell music fans you rip down bands as a pass time, cuz you are fuckin evil and a demom from hell.
Musically,Frank was "controlled chaos at it's best!" He did copy alot of other musical themes and ideals but restructured it in his own unique style. That's the definition of a musical genius. He was our Modern day Mozart.Too bad he's gone.Probably the dumbest part of Zappa was his lack of interest in trying to live a more healthy lifestyle,12 cups of coffe a day and 2 packs of cigs.Dumb all over, frank!
respect to BLS, who sounds like he might have difficulty tying his own shoelaces, coming up with the Dali analogy, respect to the Bon Jovi pomp rocker with a cool tribute, respect to all the others too.......how endearing to hear a musician of substance given the funky, fast editing treatment that is usually reserved for groups that stupid magazines/opinion formers have decided are REALLY GOOD!!!
people who traded on their hairstyles/facial hair talking sense for once about someone who traded on his love of Bartok (and his farcical hair)...,.also
I find it insane that when I first heard frank in 1973,a few of us in junior high recognized his greatness but most of the world didn't! Now it seems more and more people are now brasing his musical greatness and his legacy. He's more popular now then ever.Besides being our modern day Mozart, he was also the ultimate secular progressive. What the fuck took the rest of the world so long to recognize this irreverent musical icon genius beethoven of pop music?????
As far as I can remember, he has always been popular (although, don't take it from me, I was pretty avant garde back then). Although, (due to his lyrics) the songs were usually on the radio blacklist. Nowadays, people really enjoy irreverence, and that's why he's becoming popular again.
Musically,Frank was "controlled chaos at it's best!" He did copy alot of other musical themes and ideals but restructured it in his own unique style. That's the definition of a musical genius. He was our Modern day Mozart.Too bad he's gone.Probably the dumbest part of Zappa was his lack of interest in trying to live a more healthy lifestyle.
yeah, (Mustaine?) call him "bizarre jazzbo" which is unaccurate and pretty stupid too. But what do you want? it's hard rock and metal guys talking about zappa.
No I just say that because you basically said metal guys are stupid. Just for laughs search for the Rock Jeopardy with Dave Mustiane and Moon Zappa where she totally looks like a moron and how smart Dave Mustaine really is.
well she made herself look like an idiot by stating things like "you have weird taste in music" because the guy had knowledge of all types of music. It's just funny that she sayd "weird" taste in music because her dad experimented in genres of obscure and weird music. Bottom line is Moon is a filthy hippie.

The dude from Anthrax said "unstructured".
If he was talking about Frank's music, he doesn't have a clue.
larkydozer 2 years ago 3
Anthrax guy meant franks 12 tone orchestral music. Some of it is chaos.
But he was our modern day Mozart!
fadethetrade 2 years ago
Which record? Do you mean "Civilization" ?
larkydozer 2 years ago
civilization,many 200 motel parts,etc
fadethetrade 2 years ago
Ah, well in that case, I'd disagree with your earlier comment.
There really isn't any work of Zappa that is chaos. Improvisation within a written structure? Absolutely.
It would make sense that a metal drummer from Anthrax would confuse the two, as he's not versed in jazz or classical composition.
Make sense?
larkydozer 2 years ago
Mike keneally coined the phrase,"controlled chaos",when describing some of zappas guitar improvisational linesAnd I agree 100%.A great description.Combined with vince on drums,,it was controlled chaos at its best and if you ask a mediocraty musician such as anthrax or most of them, they won't even get it.
fadethetrade 2 years ago
Keneally has some funny songs. Great guitarist, that guy.
I think that most jazz music just sounds like unstructured chaos to the casual observer.
I think that the same effect occurs with some of Zappa's music, or even Indian Classical music. It takes some time to come to understand the forms.

Yeah not a wise choice in any way. But, it was what he wanted to do, so I support his decisions.
GrungeRock1991 4 years ago
Yeah he was miles ahead of everyone else in Rock Music, and still is. Sucks that he died. At least we have the music forever.

Didn't know Bruce Dickinson liked Frank Zappa,
This video is great.
Thanks for sharing!

lol the dude that says "bizarre jazzbo", I'd like to buy him a pint (or a ton of cocaine, whichever is more appropriate)
in the picture of Zappa with the top hat, that's not Mama Cass (who apparently he knew) in the background perchance..??

respect to BLS, who sounds like he might have difficulty tying his own shoelaces, coming up with the Dali analogy, respect to the Bon Jovi pomp rocker with a cool tribute, respect to all the others too.......how endearing to hear a musician of substance given the funky, fast editing treatment that is usually reserved for groups that stupid magazines/opinion formers have decided are REALLY GOOD!!!

people who traded on their hairstyles/facial hair talking sense for once about someone who traded on his love of Bartok (and his farcical hair)...,.also

What the fuck took the rest of the world so long to recognize this irreverent musical icon genius beethoven of pop music?????
fadethetrade 4 years ago
As far as I can remember, he has always been popular (although, don't take it from me, I was pretty avant garde back then). Although, (due to his lyrics) the songs were usually on the radio blacklist. Nowadays, people really enjoy irreverence, and that's why he's becoming popular again.

i have a problem with unstructured as well as jazzbo....
jackdelawack 4 years ago
yeah, (Mustaine?) call him "bizarre jazzbo" which is unaccurate and pretty stupid too. But what do you want? it's hard rock and metal guys talking about zappa.
fruhko 4 years ago
Dave Mustaine is pretty smart
sprimusp 4 years ago 2
good for him
fruhko 4 years ago
No I just say that because you basically said metal guys are stupid. Just for laughs search for the Rock Jeopardy with Dave Mustiane and Moon Zappa where she totally looks like a moron and how smart Dave Mustaine really is.
sprimusp 4 years ago
no, i've never said that, read my post again.
fruhko 4 years ago
yeah, doing well on rock and roll jeopardy makes one smart, lol, jesus christ...
antidote7 3 years ago
i didn't say it did. my point was that moon zappa made herself look like an idiot.
sprimusp 3 years ago
And looking like an idiot on rock n roll jeopardy makes one an idiot?
antidote7 3 years ago
well she made herself look like an idiot by stating things like "you have weird taste in music" because the guy had knowledge of all types of music. It's just funny that she sayd "weird" taste in music because her dad experimented in genres of obscure and weird music. Bottom line is Moon is a filthy hippie.
sprimusp 3 years ago
A filthy hippie? Ha, now you've proven you are an idiot. Nice job...
antidote7 3 years ago
and she's not a hippie? she's a dumb cunt
sprimusp 3 years ago
Ha, my goal was to show your stupidity and it only took two posts to reveal it...
antidote7 3 years ago
well if you lay with hippies, you are a dirty hippie.
sprimusp 3 years ago
Nah, just wanted to prove you were an idiot and you are going great lengths to solidify that point.
antidote7 3 years ago
yeah i second antidote....sprimusp is a obvious jerkoff lmaoplane.
