Absolutely wonderful! My favourite performance of this beautiful, moving aria along with Sherrill Milnes'. Truly beautiful voice with great tone and the acting alone is enough to move you. Shame about Domingo though, his acting's usually so convincing that he becomes his character, but here like people have said he just stands there as his best friend dies. I think the blame here is to do with the director, and this is actually the first time ever I have been left cold by Domingo's acting.
But how far we have come as opera actors! The reaction of Don Carlo to the death of his best friend is non-existent. He might as well sit down and have a cup of tea......!
Bruson once said that Verdi was easier to sing in many ways than other composers because, although he wrote for very specific voices and pushed his singers to their limits, he wrote very well for the voices he wrote for and he never placed unnatural demands on the voice (like verismo is apt to do)
Grande, grandissimo Bruson
LOL indeed. "Earth to Carlo - your friend has been dying for three minutes!" It's a shame. And I thought Domingo was one of the few tenors who can act decently. Seeing as this is La Scala, maybe the director told him not to? ;-)
Domingo's Carlo was chained to the floor and couldn't move, poor thing! You can't see it properly here, but later, when the guards come in, they untie him.
@lavendicata The tenor in this performance was Domingo??? Really???? I can't believe it!!! He is such a great actor in the other roles and now that... Don't know what to say...
Best rendition !

this, this is why people are awarded things like the Kammersaenger by the Wiener Staatsoper.

Bruson is a great Verdi baritone. But this Carlos is an @sshole. He's just standing here and makes nothing! My God... he should embrace Rodrigo!

la trovo migliore.
Herlea irragingibile.
