ODdly enough, I discovered Yma because of the movie "The Apple" when reviewing the cast list on wikipedia and was intrigued by how it said she had a 5 octave range. Certainly I have never heard a female singer with that deep and that high of voicem with such good tone and quality and power before. Not sure I like the song, but the singing is superb!

@divad1mc And...? I know this, and I also have a whistle register, you can hear it in a few of my videos. My point wasn't to invalidate Mariah's voice, read all my post before you jump in to a convo. I was merely say, her whistle register, and she does have a much lower voice than Mariah, as well as being able to go just as high. That is all I was saying. Though Mariah's whistle register, while good is a little more airy as well. But I am not criticizing her vocal talent, as she has a lot.

The lowest Yma goes recorded is an A2, I think.

Mariah goes down to an E2 (which is about half an octave lower). Although, I do think that Yma has a better sounding lower register, and if she had had access to today's excellent microphones at the peak of her vocal health, she probably would have been able to go that low.

And some argue that Mariah's whistle isn't a "true" whistle because the nodules on the top of her folds make it much easier to vocalize those notes.

My parents were big fans of hers in the late 50s & 60s, I grew up listening to her incredible voice after we moved back to the US and could get her recordings.

No other known human has had such an incredible vocal range. Though perhaps some sopranos could reach higher notes, none had (or have) her sweetness and purity of tone. So many of today's sopranos are just sceechers...
