The guy worrying about "real japanese" sounds like people down here in Alabama worrying about because of such and such that there won't be "real americans". That just sounds hypocritical from someone not from Japan, with no Japanese heritage, to worry about the Japanese people.
For example, I am born in Sweden, but none of my parents are born here, and they don't speak the language very well. (They are from Belgium) - But I am a real, true swede. No one can say that I am "Half belgian" or anything like that, because.. I have not even been there, I am born here in Sweden, I am fully swedish with belgiam parents.
So, what makes an japanese? In my opinion, you are a japanese just if you are born and raised in Japan. Well, I don't think many people would agree with me.

Because i myself am a "Mut" so to speak, i am half german and half indonesian. but i have a german passport but have a greater connection with indonesia and its people. so i would say i love germany as a tourist and indonesia as an indonesian. on another note, how are gaijin's treated in tokyo? and how would see a person like me, going to study there in april, fit into society there?

Well, the argument of what is a 'man' and what is a 'woman' lies in the fact that gender (not sex) is a social construction. In a Westernized society, there are specific gender roles that people have to follow, or else they get categorized as an 'other' (like you clearly stated. I think the term you might be looking for is "intersexed" possesing both male and female organs, but in almost every case, one set of said organs was underdeveloped. Being a man to me, is being a male who takes accountability and responsibility for those under your care. How you do so is irrelevant. I did this with military service, but other professions or means of responsibility are no less "manly"

Well I hadn't really paid much attention to the Semenya issue until now but I would imagine that the controversy is not so much because people in the world HAVE to be either male or female. My guess is that it's because she competed against women, and if she's a men AND if because of that she has any particular advantage at the sport then she doesn't really deserve the win.

Well, the argument of what is a 'man' and what is a 'woman' lies in the fact that gender (not sex) is a social construction. In a Westernized society, there are specific gender roles that people have to follow, or else they get categorized as an 'other' (like you clearly stated. It is really interesting because in some indigenous cultures, there are multiple genders...not just men and women.This is a very interesting look into some of the Japanese history!Thank you so much for the info. First off let me say, one great blog and I haven't said that to anybody in quite some time. I think the experience of your life is what makes you who you are. So if this woman was treated as a woman her whole life and grew up that way, she is a woman. Nothing will make her any different even the discovery of testicles inside of her. Same as how being Japanese would have to be with the experience. Labels are confusing mostly because they probably don't work that well.

Races of people do what you spoke of in respects to your Bulldog there, they try to hold on to some illusion of purity because it's aesthetically or socially pleasing. The problem is, DNA, evolution and such cares little for these things and the closer the breeding pattern the more chances of genetic flaws have at occuring. I'd say that is a good argument for mongrels of all sorts really.

too my understanding it's a a paradigm, basically rules and conditions we use to understand the things we perceive so a framework of what's wrong or right, good or bad, hard or soft ect.

I think the physical part of ourselves is just a part of what makes us visible and functionable, but it definitely doesn't define us. It's not impossible to change our outside appearance (with hormones, surgery, etc) There are also many people who do not feel defined by these gender identities and are "in between" .

I think the term you might be looking for is "intersexed" possesing both male and female organs, but in almost every case, one set of said organs was underdeveloped. Being a man to me, is being a male who takes accountability and responsibility for those under your care. How you do so is irrelevant. I did this with military service, but other professions or means of responsibility are no less "manly"

There is no Japanese (or other) race, there is only the human race. People who think some "race" is superior to others or "worth saving" lack the insight to the fact that genetic difference between any human alive is extremly small.
I may be wrong but associating sex between humans of the same sex with being gay (and hating them) is most common with people follwing Abrahamic religions. In ancient Greece people had same sex sex and they were not necessarily gay at all.

well same for my own country man..im australian and as a joke white australians like to say you can go to Sydney (one of our capitals and popular place incase you dont know much about aus) and play "spot the aussie"..because it is over-run with chinese and lebanese and middle easterns..im not a bad person :)
