  • Sweet and haunted voice she has here..

  • Instrument = Appalachian dulcimer.

    Lisa Hannigan = Hot

    Song = Epic

    Me = In Love

  • wow, am female hetro but smitten xx

  • her instrument seems to play only one note xD

  • @bignose155678 you try singing this and sustaining that One note .

  • @BeltaineRose I didn't talk about the singing, I talk about the instrument. And I sing and play bass to the original song, there's more notes in it.

  • Depech Mode would be proud of this girl

  • Thank you for posting this. Amazing, hairs on end.

  • Great song, great version - pity it stops just when it seems about to lift off with those Tomorrow Never Knows drums.

  • Marilyn Manson Sung this

  • Nice to hear a song covered this way, slavish remakes get old.

  • Lisa H. H is for headbang

  • She and the band performed this song in Toronto last night! :)

  • el de las campanas se tiro a perder alo ultimo jajajaja

  • Wow! Like a Rolling Thunder! Loved it!

  • What is the name of the instrument she plays? Sounds like a Birimbau.

  • @elmodecipio Its a Dulcimer....

  • Watching for the first time and that was FUN!!!!!!! Yeah!

  • Frickin' awesome.

  • @Oderwat

listen to her originals, your opinion on her voice will change, very very quick and vast

  • This is just perfect! :o) I love Depeche Mode's original song with all my heart but I've enjoyed this version very, very much!

  • that's rock, Beavis, definitely!

  • Her interpretation of this song completely escapes me. I think she was musically pulling our leg, at least that's the only excuse I can make for her.

@offalyfan, explain where her timing is off, or as you say "All over the shop", The structure of the song leaves a lot of room for different feels so I just don't see how, under those parameters, one can be "all over the shop", unless you're refering to meter, and then, there's not much change in meter either. So, please explain to me.

  • Comment removed

  • Wooooooooooooooooooow el mejor cover que he escuchado

  • Her timing is all over the shop but fair play she gave a good account of herself.

    Good woman Lisa

  • Wow! This cover is so lovely! She is so lovely! Please, Lisa forgive Damien for being an asshole and go back to him!!!

  • i want the lyrics!

  • Amazing..

  • pleaseee, Damien Rice, take her back, pleeeaseeeee!

  • @zoxz9 I'ld rather like her like that. Musically and else (nothing against DR, but he is repeating himself a bit, isn't he?)

  • this is my favorite thing today

  • she sounds a little like Hope Sandoval here, but she moves.

  • I'm In Love...

  • I was on her concert in Poland! She is great!

  • go on love !!!! give it some :D

  • Such a fantastic performance by a truly extraordinary singer. Lisa has made a point on being original and authentic even when doing a cover she puts herself in to what she is singing.

So many so called "artist" now days need lights, smoke machine, weird costumes, dancers on stage and so on to perform.. Just give Lisa a guitar and a Mic and you can be amazed.

  • 15 people didn't watch till the end

  • Nice..thanks for uploading!

  • she messed up the lyrics in the beginning.

  • Cute :-)

  • My favorite version of the song

  • is that a hurdy gurdy too?

  • Shes got such a haunting beautiful voice

  • A very powerful and creative cover of a classic song. And oh my, is girl cute!

  • i always find myself marveling at how a person with so much creativity, who is actually putting herself out there is not already successful worldwide..it is a strange world we live in..amazing performance

  • u hit de nail on de head but she has a wide and varied followin, she is mesmerising

  • Unreal

  • whoa

i would love to see Lisa&Cocorosie perform together

i think that'd be pretty amazing...

  • @calliegurl12 yeah! everytime I listen to her I can´t stop thinking about the same idea! glad I am not the only one :))

  • Brilliant cover! Stripped down passion - love this interpretation. Love the geezer who comes in on bells bang on time at 3:36, freaks out for the ending then stomps off when he's done.

  • Amazing song and the best performance I've ever heard!!!! Pure ORGASM =) .... specially for the combination of the music at the end and the smile of Lisa... Perfect!!!

  • imho best voice ever.

  • @crazyRyoga word

  • just to add to the mix--nina hagen covers this on her new album, entitled the same.

  • this is in the same vein as Heartbeat by Massive attack...or the house md remix.

lisa you have done it again.

p.s. i've always wanted to know the name of that instrument that is on a table and is sort of like an accordian

  • Comment removed

  • And shades of early Floyd there too, methinks.

  • Intelligent, affecting and reverential........

  • Wow ... what a great cover version! Thank you Lisa Hannigan!

  • This is to the Johnny Cash original what the Bob Dylan cover of Knocking On Heavens Door is to the Guns N Roses original.

  • @SirAylmerBostock

aarrrrghh - original is by Depeche Mode, written by Martin L. Gore released 1990 on Violator!

Johnny Cash covered Depeche Mode, NOT the other way round!

  • @karimamilena Yeah and the version of Johnny Cash was WAY better than the original.

  • @Volgin93 this is obviously a question of taste ;-)) Johnny Cash loved the original so much that he decided to cover it. And he even said that he wished he would have written this song.

  • @karimamilena & than Marilyn Manson!!!! =p lol

  • @karimamilena I can attest to that but as the saying goes Johnny Cash makes others songs his... it's the deep deep soulfulness he brings to almost everything he does.

  • @SirAylmerBostock omg are you freakin serious? what are you, 12? find your facts before speak.

  • @SirAylmerBostock omg are you freakin serious? what are you, 12? find your facts before speak. i suppose you think metallica did the original "turn the page" too, hmm?

  • @SirAylmerBostock

    Exactly

  • I love how that guy comes up at the very and just shakes the bells!

  • Lol at incongra....a footbball team.....undignified?......i dont think my comment was at all meant for you so take a chill pill.ronnysoeberg i totally agree with you....i seen a comment on a cover she done of a nick drake song and some dude was saying she couldnt sing and was out of tune....suppose theres always gonna be haters that hate stuff just to be antaganists and go against the grain.

  • You know those films, where you see the final scene, and then the music starts and the end credits roll… and you get crazy goosebumps all over your body… as you realize and see the whole world with different eyes…

This is that kind of music.

I even know a film I might make, that would fit perfectly.

  • A different side of Lisa Hannigan!

  • Words cant describe this.....johnny who?.......she is music.....full stop.brilliant lisa.....keep changing their minds.amazing.

  • Reach out and touch faith ..... flesh and bone

  • Something this reminds me of: I realized, that instead of following the values of others, you can write down your *own* principles and philosophies in a book… and call it “the bible of me”. If you then do “bible studies” on *those*, you gain deep insights and to grow personally. But in *your own* interests.

Because in your world, the most important thing, is you. (Those who disagreed in the past, all died out. Sorry.)

  • LOVE!!

  • FUCK YEAH DULCIMER FTW!!! CAINTUCKEE INSTRUMENTS!!!

  • wow

  • Hipster scum

  • @Bluedeanie /sigh.......idiot

  • @AndthentherewasJason The most hipster response.

  • Lisa and Damien always knew how to completely transform covers into their own. I was pleasantly surprised when she played this in NYC back in October. So goosebump-inducing.

  • If I were to believe that aliens exist among us, she would be the one and only candidate, so different, so simple, and so sweet! watch till the end, turns crazy towards the end!!!!

  • Thanks for the vid! do you know if there's an official mp3 version with better sound quality?!

  • Soul-searching voice with a personal touch for her talent...not afraid to just do her thing. Beautiful....

  • Interpration is an art into itself, , an that drone effect on the dulcimer kind of suspended the emotions of the song creating a tension, which was released by that fabulous crashing effect drumming at the end. Well done Lisa n Band, an thumbs up for originality, Cunla

  • hot!

  • Super, thanks for sharing ;0)

  • @fashklash just enjoy the song you self righteous cock

  • @Scientician look, It just wasn't such a life-changing experience for me. I guess I'll have to wait for my next life when I come back as andy warhol's husband or something. Till then I'm quite satisfied with my view that the emperor needs to find himself some clothes

  • @fashklash oh my! you have such a big idea of yourelf right? you can see the things we dont dare to admit. she is not an emperor, and the absolut truth does not exist. so you can say its crap and I can say that its mindblowing . so keep your view for yourelf and I can keep mine

  • @zemaraime *shrug* tbh I didn't expect much more from a bevy of scenester yuppies;Indeed, I uh, (cleaning my nails gloatingly) I foresaw this angry barrage of responses. I was simply making an observation. and judging by the reaction, I have clearly hit nerve that is particularly tender for the hipster community. Also, I would like to point out that the "emporer" I was referring to was a personifation of the hipster culture as a whole...

  • @fashklash how many months do you get in to leave your comment? It certainly does nothing to you. you are totally indifferent, "hipster community scenester yuppies" it comes out that you have no ability to judge people unless you generalize them. and after all why so much anger? how old are you mentally? you remind me of some old miserable men/women who endlessly leave bitter remarks about everyone. what about start focusing on your inner world for a change?

  • @zemaraime in fact, I do like her. I like her dress-sense, her music etc. I just thought I'd shake things up a bit. and to some extent some of her listeners ARE the agonizing hipster types, but I can' t judge HER for that; Like most Danish people I know, she is also a very nice person; And I'm a great fan of all things Irish so, I actually have no qualms with her or her music

  • @fashklash May I ask what on earth a hipster is?

  • Comment removed

  • @fashklash Lol, so 'cause you know "nice" Danish people? I laughed when you emphasized on Danish people, as if being Danish made people nice. Haha. Good stuff.

  • @Sam034 lololol, Yah Danish people are way cool; take things too seriously sometimes but I love them cos they good people and they are funny :D

  • @indegruv her accent is just another drawcard for superficial, ultra-fashion-concious, art noveau worshipping, in the scene, know-it-all, student types. It does nothing for me. nice voice though

  • @fashklash I haven't made my mind up about this particular lady but I did enjoy your ( rather caustic) comment so thanks for making me laugh!

  • @incongra IF if you dont like this you havent got an ear for good music........this is haunting and also very similiar to the doors build up of drama in a song.......the end comes to mind....whats up with you haters saying she cant sing?.....she would sing yall under the table and then eat you for breakfast.....have some respect....this lady is a genious

  • @exteriorzulu09 oh so she would "sing yall under the table" because she is a "genious" eh? And where did I say I didn't like her?

Yor'e right about one thing though. "The End" does come to mind. But not the Doors version. More like the end of sanity. You shouldn't support musicians as though they were a football team or something. It's undignified.

  • @exteriorzulu09 People who don't think she has a good voice are the kind of people who think a good voice lies in spotless technique and intonation. Which is all good and stuff. But what REALLY matters in music is your own sound. People who can convey emotion with their voice have more to offer artistically than someone who has perfect pitch. Alas, some people only care about skill. Which is why bands like dragonforce have any fans at all.

  • @fashklash so her being from Ireland automatically makes her complicit with "hipster" culture? whatever that is. just listen to the sounds and get over yourself. which is probably gonna be tough since you feel the need to justify your insecurities by flashing pop-psych analysis on a video of a nice girl singing.

  • Comment removed

  • @barrya78 oh well then, maybe I'm just insecure :)

  • but they way she sings it, it sounds more like 'bersonal'

  • @fashklash never heard of accents, stupid?

  • where can i get this track?

  • i worship this cover.

her voice and the way she really gets into her music is a true gift.

  • Great cover. Saw it first on Carson Daly during cover week!

  • yup saw this late late last night.. woke up and had to have this... amazing

  • whats taht on her left?

  • @Simonc319 the box-thing? I think it's a harmonium.

  • @herecomeoldflatfoot hey foul one, how about flushing yourself off my internet. Geesh. Where is the draino when you need it? Lmao.

  • Wow!

  • Amazing artist - voice, style, skill!!!

  • Deadly electric double bass

  • she tore it up in the end, fucking amazing!

  • i just saw her perform this on last call. amazing. :)

  • Lisa, you sound so much better when your band is playing with you. That rinky dink little instrument is almost boring to hear after a little while. But all gets great when the full band chimes in.

  • @quemo2009 she's building incredible suspense... :) me likey

  • she sounds so much like the singer from mazzy star here

    wonderful

  • she was very good when she performed in NY last year at the Gramercy Theatre...I am a convert now :P

  • I love the Dulcimer!! I wondered when Lisa would use. I haven't seen it in any other song of hers but she always uses interesting intrumentation. It makes her unique and that is why I listen to her

  • She truely is one of a kind. Long live Lisa!

  • Thats my new favorite version of Personal Jesus. I love Johnny Cash version as well but this is just amazing.

  • Wow! Thanks for the link

  • I was at this show! I was unbelievable! Lisa Hannigan is amazing!

  • how long was she on for?

  • About 45 minutes

  • Nice ending! Wasn't expecting that!

  • The instrument is called a Dulcimer and it's actually American... :)

  • She has it tuned DAD (one of the dulcimer's regular tunings), which she uses as a drone throughout the song. I hope she uses this instrument more in the future. Some really great musicians have used it in the past, such as Joni Mitchell and Richard Fariña.

  • what is the instrument she is playin??????

  • Im just back from the gig what a night!!!!! All I can say she is a World Whistling Champion Clearly best LH quote EVER "The rack is in tact"

  • she rocked NY too.... i also got to see her back when she played with DR... and she kind of stole the show with her voice, though damien is to me also a great artist.

  • love the way ya think the songs ending cos the roadie comes on at 3:41 but then sure doesnt he join in lak

  • I really like her voice ... Damien rice is an ass.

  • hot shit....this song explodes....awesome

  • She just makes it her own. It's amazing!

  • Just saw her last night in Vicar Steet in Dublin and she finished with this song. The floor was shaking at the end. Pure Magic.

Great quality video and audio on this btw...what camera did you use?

    Thanks for uploading :-)

  • breathtaking....and yeah,simply amazing!!

I just love an atmosphere in this song...Lisa is so talented !

  • Simply amazing! ;o) great to see Lisa finally making giant steps in her own right. Fantastic debut album and great lives shows. This cover at the end was just brilliant. What a star! ;o) x

  • The guy who comes on and does the bells..genius! tight ending too.

    I love you Lisa !

  • but it seems so spontaneous but he does it ever time lol

  • amazing!!

  • wow...very interesting

  • oh my god the end! crazy good!

  • My goodness she fucking rocks like anyone!!!!

  • amazing!!!!!!!!!

  • she was incredible tonight in san francisco. this video is awesome. i hate depeche mode, so i was glad she did such a great job with this song. very cool atmosphere. great warmup to david gray. i would definitely pay to see her again.

  • We heard Lisa and Band at the Rhythm Room in Phoenix. They rocked the place. So fine.

Come back to Arizona, Lisa. We love your music and creativity. You were amazing in person, so real, authentic, especially in a small venue as the headliner.

  • She takes a song and makes it uniquely hers. Im a great fan of hers and have seen her live. An amazing musician and person! Well done Lisa!"

  • what is this monotone instrument?

  • Just saw them open for David Gray in Seattle. Fantastic show. LOVE this cover. Just picked up the CD too. :-)

  • ha, seriously?! I was there too. i hadn't heard of her but i like her!

  • Anyways, I disagree with some of you. Any song she sings sounds simply amazing whether it be one of her own or a cover.

  • Simply a fantastic rendition of Depeche Mode's classic. Don't hate on her. Cover songs are a form of flattery. Saw her open for David Gray at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall (Portland, Oregon) on Nov.4, 2009. Just the kind of song to get the crowd energized for David's performance. Watchin' for your mainstream debut Lisa!

  • @erattix well she has a solo album out already and an ep.

  • I bought her album yesterday....but I wouldn't say she's gone "mainstream" in the U.S. (obviously). She's got a great sound, and I think this cover as well as her other recordings hold quite a bit of potential for stateside exposure.

  • @erattix I am happy you got it. Enjoy it, because it is my favorite album and she is my favorite singer. I still have not gotten to see her live though :(

  • @erattix ....Johnny cash mate not depeche mode

  • @erattix ....Johnny cash mate not depeche mode....with a hint of the end by the doors.....brilliant

  • @exteriorzulu09 i'm confused... are you saying it sounds more like the johnny cash version, or are you saying that the song "personal jesus" is originally by johnny cash? cuz "personal jesus" is definitely by depeche mode...

  • Depeche is way better !

  • lies.

  • True !
