  • 2:58 OS X feature not found in OS X

  • wow u made the first song? i love it!

well... ok about the video. Wich one is faster? Im using compiz on my slax, a smaller version of slackware. It is really good but sometimes, rarelly it crashes, and well, i would like to know if kwin is faster cuz i never used it before.

  • KWin is good, just i think its a little slower than compiz on KDE, But since KDE 4.5 KWin is really shaping up. Only thing that bothers me is that compiz is slightly harder to get working in KDE flawlessly :/

  • looks like kwin isnt crap anymore.

  • @robyboy718 yeh but try to run some video while effects are enabled and watch the tearing and bad to none full screen performance. Compiz is so slow in gnome with video, especially in kaffeine i get audio sync issues while watching dtv. With Kwin I can run the videos but still some tearing in the video. But Kde is so but ugly compared to gnome. The Kubuntu/Kde guys need some style. I just upgraded my monitor to a 24", now all I see is ugly grey. Ubuntu has better integration, better fonts too.

  • It's a shame cause compiz is so fast and smooth compared to Kwin. But Kwin is much more stable.

I love looking at gnome after using Kde, it's just so much better integrated, like firefox scroll bars, amarok and synaptic look way nicer too than in Kde. Kwin 'scale in' doesn't seem to turn on when you want it too, i love that feature and works shit. I'm using Windows 7 more and more...might delete Linux way too much effort, it's such a hack job of a system.

  • if u are moving windows in expo you just have to right click on the window that you want to move, I don't know if u were using " alt " to move the window

  • @AngelSite10 i don't need to hold "alt" or anything... just use the regular left click mouse button and move the window around. thanks for watching

  • @hananiasq your expo doesn't work ... I thought that "alt" was the problem :P

  • What is a title and artist of second song ?

  • @templarjusz Title: I don't know... but the artist is, Mihimaru GT.

  • @templarjusz I was watching this video in my Windows 7 Dell laptop, trying to figure out which desktop to use (Gnome Shell, Kde + Kwin, Kde + Compiz, Unity + Compiz...) and stumbled on your question, so I used my iOS 4.3.1 powered iPhone and the U$ 4.90 app SoundHound to to discover which song it is: "Theme of mihimaLIVE" by Mihimaru GT, on "Best of Mihimaru GT" released in 02/05/2007.... That's what I call OS diversity... Not to mention that I'm listening to music on my Android 2.2 Galaxy Tab!

  • what is a tile of music?

  • @szatkus 1st song, I made it. Recorded my guitar a couple of times, and use some drum beats from Garageband. The second song is by Mihimaru GT, I don't know the name of the song : ( but I love that beat!!

  • What I find upsetting is the effects touted in Kwin already existed through Compiz. It's rather silly to impliment their own versions while pretending Compiz is utterly worthless like Gnome is trying to contend. Someone said this all comes down to trying to make a name for themselves, I would say it's partly true. And another user said they should've spent time making their shells more stable not worrying about the compositing that Compiz already has mastered. Oh well RIP compiz

  • @litemirrors Compiz was never intended to be a permanent fixture. It started out as a hack that was fully expecting KDE and GNOME to implement their own full featured compositing sooner or later. KDE did just this. Also, Kwin is much better for KDE as its already a fully integrated part of KDE when Compiz has never integrated properly with KDE (when KDE users use Compiz they actually lose some window management features that are part of Kwin).

  • Well, I don't know about everyone else... But the fonts, window decorations, menus, etc... Just looks cleaner and crisp in KDE than Gnome (gnome I don't understand, not as crisp and easy to read...). "Why?" I don't know... but stability goes for Gnome. To solve the problem, I have Gnome install and KDE desktop as option. If your are a complete noob, I recommend Gnome. KDE needs work on the config System settings (confusing and limited!!!)

  • @hananiasq System -> Preferences -> Appearance -> Fonts ,

    Choose Subpixel smoothing

should do the trick for crisp fonts

  • In case some wonder...I kept the kwin manager...but updated to 4.4 beta 2. I'm in the process of making a video on it. In my opinion, it is more stable than Compiz. I can watch movies with out glitches, and play games with out turning off any effects. (like I have to do in Compiz). I got tired of turning Compiz ON and OFF, just to use do some casual things, like watch a movie or play a game. Compiz is powerful, but too unstable right now.

  • IMO Compiz is more powerful with more features and settings, but Kwin is simpler to use and better integrated. Also the future of Kwin seems BRIGHT to me :)

You have to bear in mind that effects in Kwin are VERY young. The real test will be how good they look in KDE 4.4 and .5. The biggest current advantage of Kwin IMO is mostly ease of use.

  • Well, shortly after recording the video. I installed KDE 4.4 beta 2. And it seems to be pretty stable... (no crashes yet.)

They added a few features in their configuration, that I complained not being on 4.3. So I agree with you, their "future... seems bright." If they really take notes from Compiz, Windows, OSX.

If they can pull it off, they can put a better 'name' for linux than ubuntu/ gnome has done so far!!

  • I agree :)

Although I am interested in seeing what the Gnome project pull out their hats for Gnome 3 :)
