um no it does not!!!! his voice is freakin amazing! do u know how hard it is to sing the way he does live!!! its very hard!!! and from my perspective he was on key
I knew steve back in the day and for example when he did the song Only Solutions for Tron he told me he deliberately made his voice sound different because he thought the movie would be a flop, and didn't want to be associated with the movie! And yes when u do the amount of concerts they did back in the day,1- your going to blow your voice out. Or 2- you will tone it down a bit so u can make it through the tour! He could hit the notes in the studio when he needed to!
So the "late start" was a slight disadvantage? I always wondered if Steve started singing in Journey at 20 instead of 28, would his voice be any different?
@Gregsynth You,ve got a very wise head on young shoulders! All your comments are so true. Its a testament to how good Steve Perry's voice was that after Journey had worn him out he managed to have any voice left at all. Most singers would be totally mute by just 1 year of extreme touring let alone year after year!
@Gregsynth I love his voice too! What amazes me is how a singer can end up with a much lower, raspy vocal range with a totally different tone to it-Alien Project stuff or Infinity album slowly changing through the years to how he ended up sounding on his FTLOSM album........but still sounding totally like Steve Perry!!! How can you sound different but instantly recognizable? Takes real talent to reinvent yourself everytime your vocal range changes, and Perry's got it in heaps!!!!
His voice deepened slightly in 1983 (age), and he sang material that was suited for his voice (Frontiers). But then in concert, he had to sing songs that had a HIGHER range to them (Keep on Running, Lay It Down, etc), and with the deeper voice, he had to really "go for it." That's probably what started the raspiness/nodules!
Oh yeah, by Street Talk his voice was completely different from the Escape era (even noticeably different from the year previous). He lost his earlier clarity and started getting into that "chesty singing" problem that happens when your voice is either declining, or wearing out. It happened to Freddie Mercury to an extent.
I'm sure Steve knew his voice was giving out, but did he really know as early as 1983/4?
Steve did say in a 1983 interview that he was "tired of singing high," and "wanted to try new stuff." On Frontiers, his voice is a bit lower (probably age), but on the Japan 1983 leg of the tour, his voice sounded almost the same as the escape era!
I love Steve's lower tones. Regarding the discussion about his voice change, Steve has established himself, on firm foundation, as a phenomenal vocalist and as THE voice of Journey! He could stand on stage and growl, talk, whisper or burp and that would be his style and absolutely supreme to his fans.
perry said in a street talk interview that he was tierd of singing high and wanted to beef up his voice for himself. he would record most of his street talk solo songs in the morning when his voice is maturest ....... i beleve perry didnt loose his voice., he wanted to try new things
I'm a huge Journey fan and I mean no disrespect... bigges Perry fan out here. But, I often wonder about his voice and what happened to it. You can even here on the records that it started to "give way" around Frontiers. This is a great example of him not being able to hit the high notes anymore. Does anybody know what happened?
I don't here it "giving way" on Frontiers. But I do occassionally hear it give way in some boot legged videos and even this one. The vox is a sensitive instrument. It's affectd by exhaustion and fatigue. I'm sure the next day he could sound totally different.
His voice really didn't start wearing until the '86 Raised on Radio Tour. He could still hit most of the high notes but certainly more strained and raspy. After the ROR tour his voice was pretty much shot. When he came back in '94 for the FTLOSM tour he had to sing all the Journey songs 1 to 2 keys lower. Sad how all those years of constant touring took their toll. Without a doubt one of the greatest voices and singers of all time.
As a countertenor his voice was destined to get lower as the years went on. It is just how tenor vocals are. However, I think it's commendable that instead of trying to hit the high notes that he used to be able to, he instead welcomes the lower sound to produce a different sort of music. In this way he was able to sing the songs and make them sound good as opposed to straining and making them sound terrible.
his voice sux really bad here, as well as in a lot of other places that i have heard

Yeah it is sad: Most singers are in their prime for at least 8-10 years, Steve lost his original countertenor only after 5 years!
Least it was only clarity and range that went--his live pitch was always consistent!

Years of touring. From Infinity through Frontiers it was 9 months on the road and 3 months in the studio. I guess it took its toll.

Oh man, you're right. I've never heard Perry's voice like this before. His voice is shot from all the touring I guess.
