For those still wondering, no, he is not drunk or incapacitated. He is performing and the particular crowd was amazing by letting him do it. There is nothing wrong with it, really. He is probably replicating how he felt or acted when he first conceived the song because of what he felt (drunk and dejected). It is a rare glimpse at the process of an artist working. Cherish it!

I blame myself for not knowing the signals and not acting on stuff. But I was pissed, losing my mate sent me into a bollox turmoil. Then lost the love of my life. His voice, and this performance reminds me of the horrible days prior to splitting up - and me questioning. And now, I live in a city which is not mine and see him enjoy his life. x

This is one of the best versions that I have seen. The audience didn't laugh to much I guess, I just can't stand to watch it. This is such a sad song, and when the audience laughs as if he's joking it kind of hurts to watch.
one day i'm going to play this song, the difference is that i'm going to be really freaking wasted... i'll remake this song for damien to know you shouldn't pretend to be drunk... that's unethical.

By becoming the character, listeners who are going through similar situations will feel even more of a connection

I think you might be missing the point. Self indulgent and drunk... it's the humour of the condition that appeals, even though that's the saddest thing about human beings. At least we can have a little laugh with eachother at our own expense.
