Technicallly, a pirate would normaly carry a "Blunderbuster," which shoots one bullet at a time. So, it wasn't at ALL automatic... Thats why they carried up to fifteen with them, along with a CUTLASS, ARTHUR. You may have run out of "bullets," BUT YOU COULD'VE STILL USED YOUR SWORD IF YOU HAD HAD ONE.

1. Japan should not have reflected bullets off the edge of his blade. Sure, it looks cooler; yes, the Japanese had superior sword-making skills and their steel was unrivaled at the time, but the bullets are most likely still going to nick the blade.
