Not part of the drug culture but if I was id definitely choose this over modern house and trance, I don't see whats so soothing about intense beats :L
LOVE THE VIDEO. THIS IS MY FAVOURITE TRACK OFF OF THE BEST ALBUM THEY EVER MADE-SECOND BEST WAS FOR GIRLS WHO GROW PLUMP IN THE NIGHT. SAW THEM LIVE 5 TIMES BACK IN THE SEVENTIES - FANTASTIC !
I agree with Rob, "In the land" is one of my favorite albums of all times as well. I think I heard it for the first time in 1975, bought it then bought it again when released on CD.
I met Richard Sinclair a few times, For me one of best musicians and, most of all, singers of England. Check the first Caravan albums and also Hatfield and the North records.
Caravan have been interviewed by the legendary snooker player Steve Davis in this months AOR presents Prog magazine. Brilliant stuff, looking forward to seeing them at Lydney later this year.
Never did the smokey stuff, but always loved Dave Sinclair's keyboards and the whimsical excellence that is Caravan...eeeeee, they don't make 'em like this any more lad...
this is one o those songs that you know every comment in the room, was left by a stoner. what would life be like without a set o headphones and a smoke?
This is just so GOOD,Love the Cd.Only been into Caravan for what 2 month. One of my top bands from yesteryear..And just getting in to the Strobes and Camel. This is what weed was made for lol
Yes, there aren't many musical forms that are so peaceful and worthy of appreciation as the psychedelic rock of those times. Why won't anybody produce more of this fantasy-like music today? If you're serious about listening to some cosmical genius, try Michael Manring's 'Adhan' or Jason Ricci.
Man im gettin old but i still want to go a night wander in the woods full of mushrooms again before i die. drop the shackles of the middle age responsibility for one weekend of madness.
UIVMM I think Caravan's kepboard player was David Sinclair (a la Matching Mole) not either of the Dave Stewarts! there's a lot of muddle in these posts
In the land of grey and pink where only boyscouts stop to think.....they'll be coming back again....those nasty grumbly gremlins....and they're climbing down your chimney...yes they're trying to get in......come take your money...isn't it a sin they're so thin..................
There is something joyous about this song.A hangover from 60 s pysche, but thats no bad thing.Bands were prob doing more drugs in the 70 s than in the 60s!.This and Golf Girl are my fave Caravan tunes.Too young to remember this first time round but i got into it in the 90 s at around the same time i got into Nick Drake. The two always remind me of what iwas doing then, although they are very different artists. Both very English tho i guess.
Caravan is by far my favorite group. They, and the Moody Blues are the best music I've come across in my 61 years of life. The British have created the best music. God bless The Isle of St. James.
when i listened to caravan in around 1976, i said caravans ambience meant what it would like to be a whimscal hippie. brillant.. having a carefree and childlike attitude to life. then I grew up. thanks for the memories.
in the land of the grey and pink and from gils who plump up at night are two really good album, can someone recommend me another???, id like to listen more of this band
Caravan only did three albums worth listening to - the two you mentioned (their 3rd and 5th) plus their 2nd 'If I could do it all over again...".
I bought every album they ever made, but I've got rid of all except those three because they are terrible - especially 'Cunning Stunts' and 'Waterloo Lily'. Hideous and annoying.
But 'Grey and Pink' remains my favourite album by any band, ever. Which goes to show you can't produce consistently good music for more than two or three years.
there used to be times when I listened to that song with a friend of mine, all day long.... now when he commited a suicide I can't stop thinking about him when I am listening to this beautiful song.
Great stuff, many thanks. My sister used to play this album when it was new and I was just 6, and I remember it even from then - especially Golf Girl. Thanks for the vid and nice work on crediting everything involved - something far too few people do on here.
Yep! And just for those who don't know: This is NOT the Eurythmics guy, but David L. Stewart - the one who had a No. 1 hit in the UK with with his cover of 'It's My Party' together with Barbara Gaskin in 1981...
yeah it's a shame he has the same name as the lame eurythmics guy, making us have to explain that to others so we dont look like we like that pop crap when talking about prog.
Er - it's Dave Sinclair on keyboards, actually. His cousin Richard Sinclair is on bass and vocals, Pye Hastings on guitar and Richard Coughlin on drums.
This is from a truly great album; easily their best.
@progjazzfusion I'm pretty sure it is Mike Ratledge who began the entire fuzz (and wah) organ trend that was later utilized by a large amount of Canterbury bands.
@Tengent - Yes I agree mike was the innovator of fuzz organ in canterbury (and probably of all music back then), and I love soft machine the best of all the canter bands, but mikes fuzz organ sounded much different as he played a lowrey organ, where egg+caravan used hammond organs that sound the same to each other with fuzz. I have both kinds of organs and run them with a fuzz pedal + you cant get mikes sound with a hammond, and cant get egg or caravans with a lowrey.
@progjazzfusion Ahh very true. When Dave was in Egg, he used two different type of distortion pedals. One that Mont also used on his bass, and another one used solely for the organ.
righto Mr pedantic .......the mans from Russia and making positive comment about this song..and you reply with a snidey little comment about the geographical error..what a pole smoker
