  • I HAVE THE TEDDY BEARS VERSION OF THIS ALBUM I GOT IN THE LATE 70'S (ON AN ALBUM CALLED "TWENTY ONE HIT WONDERS" AS WELL AS OTHERS LIKE "RHYTHM OF THE RAIN AND BIB BAD JOHN BY JIMMY DEAN) SEEING THAT EARLY PHOTO OF PHIL SPECTOR.. WHO'D THOUGHT HE'D END UP IN PRISON FOR MURDER.

  • BEATLES AT THEIR BEST !!!

  • It's quite something to think that here is John relatively known outside Liverpool, singing a Phil Spector song, who a decade or so later would go on to produce John's solo stuff.

John must have thought "Geez it's Phil Spector, I loved his stuff" and Phil must have thought "It's John Lennon from The Beatles"

And somewhere in the studio there would have been some 16yr old making tea, just completely oblivious to it all.

  • the hamburg version of this is better.the drums are more powerful.

  • @jayfey77

    Link?

  • what kind of messsage does this show?

  • i love this so much.. but where's Ringo.. For me Ringo sounds better than Pete (:

  • i like this version so much.. but Ringo.. should be here (:

  • las cuatro personas que marcaron mano abajo tienen problemas auditivos jeje..

  • The Teddy Bears still rule but nice version...I do love you Ree

  • Beatles music - MORAISITO AMOR BIODEGRADÁVEL - the best

  • i tought their name at this time were the silver beetles

  • Not as refined and polished as at the BBC - but wonderful. Filled with raw spirit and soul.

  • They sound nervous in this version. Maybe the nerves is making them play a little faster. Sweet take though.

  • hey that versem is form spector... but he original is " to know him is love him" ;)

  • Damn Pete, slow down brother. It's a moderate ballad not Long Tall Sally.

  • This is NOT the Beatles! Their version on Decca was slower, unless there's 2

  • thats john lennon the lead vocals

  • the beatles bbc sounds slower and lovely check it out

  • GUS4BEATLES, the pitch here is wrong.

  • @Melchersson ooh thats cool i think i like you!;) u know everything i want to know.. but i do havwe like a million huge book about them that i read alot!

    *MY.LOVE.PAUL*

  • Christ. John's voice when he says "Whhhhhyyyyy" @ 0:52 Like velvet. His voice was so beautiful.

  • @electrocuteanna "is" so beautiful

Anna,he still is with us...now go and hear John's velvet vocal sing "Anna"

  • what are the odds that the worlds greatest musicians lived in the same place

    :)

  • Lennon sings (:

  • I knew that but i didnt know the name was The Silver Beatles

  • @DevilsLuck34 They called them self everything from "The Beat brothers" to the Beatles! But during this era they simply called them self The Beatles!

  • wait... silver....

  • @DevilsLuck34 that was their first name before The Beatles because best was the drummer but then eppy:D lol Brain told them they had to get a better drummer

  • The original was by The Teddy Bears, featuring Phil Spector. I love this version!! There's also live Beatles at the BBC version. One of John's best early performances.

  • I heard they regretted doing this, because they knew it would come back to haunt them when Please Please Me came about, or something...

  • who sings???

  • of course is lennon????

  • It's definitely John :)

  • I think is George.

  • the slower version is much much better, listen to it, johns voice is awesome

  • by the way the drummer for this one is pete ringo star came later, when the band decided to officialy replaced pete.

  • John Lennon singing the lead on this one,

George sings Three Cool Cats and Sheikh of Araby.

  • a really great song i think it may be about cynthia

  • nope, it was written by phil spector in like 1958 ....

the band The Teddy bears (wich phil spector was in)

  • @thehappyhippie1 No 'cause The Beatles didn't make this song

  • This is the BBC's Sounds of the Sixties Beatles A to Z song for week starting 28Nov 2009. A short history of this song can be heard 38 mins into the prog & can be heard again on line for 1 week by clicking on listen again at the prog

  • it sounds like john singing the lead and paul and george sings the harmonies.... which year is this from?

  • 1962 janurary 1st

  • okay, awesome

  • @viceisthename oops, didn't realize so many people have already answered your question ... sorry!

  • @1982pencil Hehe, it's alright.. the 11th answer ;D

  • @viceisthename the song was first written in 1958 by phil spector, and the beatles sang their version in 1963

  • @viceisthename 1962. Yes, John sings the lead vocal. Mostly at that time John sang the lead vocal.

  • @MistrBedGaj Okay :P

  • @viceisthename 1962 I believe

  • @viceisthename January 1 1962! They must have a hangover?

  • @Melchersson Hehe :)

  • @viceisthename The Decca-session was 1.1.1962.

  • @timotastic Haha, I've got 5 answers to that now.

  • @viceisthename January 1, 1962 (says so on the picture) when they auditioned for Decca records, and didn't pass. Don't be sad, though: the Beatles did go on to become fairly popular ;-)

  • @ITILII Oh, I didn't see that.

  • @viceisthename from 1962 Decca auditions, John singing lead, Paul and George harmony, with Pete Best on drums.....this audition they didn't pass, but I think these guys did have some success in any event :-)

  • @ITILII i know

  • @viceisthename January 1st, 1962

  • @diegoloxa92 OK, I've got 7 answers now!

  • @viceisthename Jan. 1962 from the audition at Decca

  • @ITILII Already got 8 answers to that

  • @viceisthename it is the 1962 , in the Decca audition ...

  • @laloisaac That's the 9th answer of that question now... i counted them. :)

  • @viceisthename I think it's from the Decca audition, which was January 1, 1962.

  • @viceisthename its from 1958-1959

  • @iplaymusic369 "its from 1958-1959" I believe it's from the Decca audition, January 1, 1962. I like this version better than the BBC version from a year or two later.

  • sin embargo, prefiero la version de Amy Winehouse! =)

  • hahaha eres idiota, esa pinche pendeja que parece de la calle hecho a perder la cancion

  • good lord!!! paul & george are singing the harmonies but that's got to be PETE singing the "da-da-da-das in the background.

  • I've been listening to these Decca audition songs for some 25 years. I never realized until reading your comment that, yes, Pete must actually be singing in the background here- Quite clearly as well.

This must be the only instance of a recorded Beatles song featuring Pete singing in the background.

    Now THAT's historic!

  • john an chuck did this song live in 73or 72

  • woow john your asome nice vocals john

  • This is definitaly John Lennon singing. "love love her' voice is John. Dont think George has a part lead yet maybe backup.

  • to think the A&R man at Decca Rejected the Beatles!!!!!!!! He must have been kicking himself in the Back for that one.

  • this sounds like the 50s!!! Go John!

  • These Decca tapes evoke a long lost world.

  • how can any true beatles fan mistake this for george? john's beautiful voice is SO distinct that you shouldn't even have to second guess that! unless if you are a beatles noob.....

  • lol noob! pwn!

you are so very cool with your cool words!

seriously man, it's an honest mistake. George's voice does have a hint of John.

Great song, thank you for posting it!

  • ringo was bettr... best wasn't bad though

  • John.

  • john lennon sings this infact he re record in mainlab avenue correct me if im wrong

  • no thats john lennon 100 percent

  • at 1:22 paul was sawed a spider on the roof! lol

    beutiful song :)

  • wen i 1st started 2 listen 2 it i thught is was john but as i got farther i thought it was george but then it started sounded like john again. soo im just not sure cuz i just dont wanna make an assumption then be wrong in all

  • It sounds like John, I`m sure it is. He has a totally different voice, kinda like if it were Ringo singing, you`d know it. But the style is like George`s but it`s John singing.

  • Its john singing just listen u guys r not true beatle fans or u would know imediatly that it is john.

  • O`GOD I miss u laura...

  • Damn, I was wrong THAT IS JOHN!! He sounds much or should I say MUUUUCH more englishy accent here (very young), but yeah it is John. Plus before they were famous, as if John would let george do the lead lol! John was the boss back then! LOVE THEM ALL!

  • Pretty sure it is George singing, John had a more raucous sounding voice then. George's was always soft and subtle. Only listened to it once, but right away I was like: That's George! Shall now listen again, but you know good ole first instincts and I have been listening to them since I was 6! :-D Even did reports on them in school (this was in the 70's BEFORE their resurgence, kids thought I was goofy lol, am lol)

  • It's John singing. It sounds exactly like him...he sings it on the BBC recordings too

  • About the "who's singing this song" argument, John or George, try listening to the "Live at the Star Club" version posted by Beatlesuploader2000. It has a spoken introduction and count-in that sounds exactly like George to me.

  • It is John though.

  • I love this song....

  • the BBC version is better =) but this one r ocks too

  • When I listen to these Silver Beatles songs it is obvious to me that Ringo is a far better drummer than Best.

  • @whathoney73 I don't agree with you. Best was good enough for beat-music.

  • @whathoney73 Yeah just listen to the Live at the BBC version and the drumming sounds better. Overall I prefer the BBC one.

  • @whathoney73 Rubbish !!

  • @altersachse you must be daft

  • @whathoney73 keep in mind what you hear of ringo is many years AFTER these recordings. What i hear of john lennon in the beatles>>> what i hear here.

  • @whathoney73 wouldn't say that, Pete Best was probably replaced because Ringo is more personable than the quiet Pete

  • @whathoney73 You are so right. This song screams for a backbeat and there isn't any. Compare it with the way Ringo plays this song on the Star Club bootleg. Now THAT's a backbeat. Plus, he adds terrific dynamics -- building up to a climax and then releasing it. That's what a good drummer can do for a song.

  • this is the earliest song I remember, Phil Spector was on the original

  • Comment removed

  • John sings lead on Baby its you. Anna, You really got a hold on me. there's 3 songs that you would swear its George. but its John. Listen to them.

  • Those songs sound like John to me, don't sound like George at all. What about Do You Want To Know A Secret? THAT sounds like George.

  • 'do you want to know a secret?' is certainly George... George has a slightly lazier sound to his voice, they are similar though

  • do you want to know a secret IS george paul and john wrote it for him

  • With a user name like that, it has to be good! I love it! Keep "up" the good work!

  • Such a LOVElY song!! ^_^ One of my favorites from them.

  • good song

  • y didnt they keep this rocker image

  • the Quarrymen

  • Johnny and the Moondogs.

  • Comment removed

  • They were NEVER called the Silver Beatles, though they did toy with the idea of calling themselves Long John & the Silver Beatles

  • Yes, it's John, but his vocal is better in the Live at the BBC version IMO. This is slightly rushed, that's more heartfelt.

  • Agreed. The slower one is better. I think it's the way he wanted it, just that the fans wanted stereotypical rock 'n' roll.

  • Is that really John singing? Can't believe it! It sounds like George...

  • Yeah that is John

  • It was Silver BEETLES, not Silver Beatles!!!

  • Many people ask what are Beatles? Why Beatles? Ugh, Beatles, how did the name arrive? So we will tell you. It came in a vision a man appeared on a flaming pie and said unto them From this day on you are Beatles with an «A». Thank you, Mister Man, they said, thanking him.

    -John Lennon, Mersey Beat, 1961

  • In this song squeeze a sweet john

  • esta version se escucha sensilla

  • aww the beginning of the best band ever silver beetles-the beatles

  • you say right, I can add other word. Bravo for your comment !

  • so sad.. i used to have this exact cd, i still have the cover but the disk was stolen from me..

  • the later BBC version i much better. John's (and the others) voice sounds better there

  • its john, when john sings soft lovey songs like this hisvoice sounds different.Plus when he was famous he dubbed his voice so it sounded different to his real voice.

  • This is from the Beatles Jan.1st 1962 Decca audition. John is singing lead

  • Thats Lennon all the way!

  • The Silver Beatles were John, Paul, Stu Sutcliffe, etc. and were a very early version of what ultimately became the Beatles.

  • no????? are u kiddin'???? *ironic*

  • It's John. I've heard this same recording years ago. I remember a Beatles movie that was on TV maybe 5 or 6 years ago about the first year or two of the group(pre Ringo days). "To Know Her is To Love Her" was one of the songs they performed in the movie...and John was the lead singer.

  • no, listen to nunneds, it's definitely John by no doubt. I know, but early Beatles sounds like this...promise

  • lol how does this NOT sound like john? i can recognize that angelic voice in any song :]

  • Ah, I'm with you on that one!

  • It does sound like john but I can't here Paul or George in the backing vocals. If this was them then they sure improved it by the time it was recorded for their BBC show.

  • not legit, if that's John it's John Swartz

  • wrong idoit

  • I have a stupid question!!! Why and when were the called The Silver Beatles?

Se quedaron con "Long John and the Silver Beetles"... Que tampoco les gustaba, pero de todos modos lo usaron porque querían el trabajo.

  • ROUGH TRANSLATION....:)...Daddysgirl54 A: The first time he touched as "Silver Beetles" (with "e" and not "a", as Paul said) was in 1960 in a room in a basement in Hamburg, thanks to a certain Brian Cass. "Beatles" was not a very attractive name, so Cass wanted to be called "Long John & the Pieces of Silver," but they did not want. They stayed with "Long John and the Silver Beetles" ... That neither liked, but they used it anyway because they wanted the job.

  • Definitely John.....George was never the "lead" singer....no lead singer in The Beatles....George sang a few tunes...but not nearly as many as John and Paul...

  • its george he was the lead siger back then with like this, take good care of my baby, and and roll over beethoven i dont know.

  • Their harmonies are superb for way back then.

  • I've only heard this by a girl, this is so nice!

  • amy whinehouse I suppose^^ or the teddy bear

  • Checks videos in related ones. Mom's is the Teddy Bears one. :)

  • George is singing!!!!

  • Is George singing!!!!!!!

  • John is singing

  • i also think it's john^^

  • thats john ^^

  • Drumming is amateurish. It's off just enough to spoil the groove.

I don't know which one is singing but it's ethereal given the restraints of the genre.

  • John is singing. And what the hell are you talking about?

  • Oh really sorry. I thought you were dissing Ringo until I saw that it was the Decca audition and it was Pete Best. I thought I was listening to 'Live at the Star Club'. Yeah Pete's drumming really dragged them down. When you hear stuff like this, it's no wonder they fired him. Anthology 1 also has some examples of his amateurish drumming. John sounds great though.

  • Ringo forever, Pete Best never!

  • The problem with Pete can be heard at this audition. He seems to be drumming independently from the band. He was very limited in his choices. Ringo was far more inventive and attuned to the subtleties of the song. Just listen to how awful the Pete Best version of "Love Me Do" is as heard on ANTHOLOGY ONE. Ringo's work in the Beatles is quite underrated.

  • I have Love Me Do on CD with Pete Best as the drummer with he was a Beatle.

  • I know! I often come across comment threads that talk about what a raw deal Pete got, as if those Beatles were so sinister because they fired him. Jeez, just listen to the guy! There are many examples of his drumming. And then compare it to Ringo's. He couldn't keep time and his drumming swallowed them. Why wouldn't they fire him in favor of Ringo?
