Just got a new (2nd hand) car, which has a cassette player ( google it those younger than 30 :-) ) First one I played was Darklands really really loud. Brilliant !
"and we looked so good , and we lived our lives in black" - kind of summed it up. A mix of depression and euphoria....
Oh take me back to 1987...black clothes....crimped hair..acne.... Red stripe lager and my first girlfriend watching these guys at Newcastle...perfect.
The band doesn't attempt to make it look like they're playing the instruments in this video. It's like they're mocking the whole process. I love this band.
I guess growing up in East Kilbride means they Reid brothers didn´t have much choice regarding whether they were happy or unhappy when it rains. Having grown up in Western Scotland I know it isn´t really an option :-)
This song got my attention back in 1987. Great stuff even now! Stands easy out with the guitar riff and the fast paced rhythm. Brilliant! Timeless, indeed...
i love this song and the music video. isn't it sad how the creativity, quality of music videos/songs/songwriting devolves as time goes on? shouldn't it be the other way around?
@bobismesothere It's not that it's devolving, it's that history remembers the good and forgets the crap. Trust me, there was a LOT of crap in yesteryear. The 80s, by far, had some of the worst offenders. If you look deep enough, you can still find quality songwriting.
Brothers and Sisters, I had a dream last night and Jesus Christ came down out of a golden cloud. He had a bottle of J Walker Black, a carton of Marlboro's, some good clean speed, and a fold of china white. He said; "My son, let's get fucked up and listen to the Chain." So I put on my vinyl copy of Darklands to begin, and slowly and surely we entered the gates of heaven. The last thing He told me, was this; "There will always be poor stupid people who feel threatened by greatness. Fuck em."
@hihihippl Not acid, but X, meth, Oxy, and Wild Turkey 101, although most anything will do. The only things I would discourrage are; ANY FORM OF RELIGION, an accidental OD on shrooms which is too fucking easy to do, and people/assholes/people/assholes/ etc. And probably 90+% of people are complete fucking assholes,
A final thought; think about the best; who in their lifetime never impressed: Christ, Van Gogh, Vlad the Impaler. Thanks for the note,......B
Man, I saw these guys on the second Lolapalooza tour...they belted out song after song, without mercy. One song ended, the next kicked in.They were drunk as hell,as they always were, but they did not miss a note...and Jim did not say word one to us.It was one of the defining points of my life, seeing them live.
Several years ago I read somewhere that they were trying to schedule The Jesus and Mary Chain at 'Dollywood' (Dolly Parton Country theme park) because they thought it was a Christian band. Now THAT would have been funny.
Actually they appeared on a Dolly Parton TV show in 1987. Amazingly, seems Dolly loved the Darklands LP, she'd really champion it around. And while the Mary Chain aren't a Christian band at all, they aren't exactly a satanist band either, are they? William has repeatedly stated he believes in God (in many interviews) and at the end of the day, the band''s name is considered offensive only by people who choose to be offended by it.
I remember this party at night and at the backyard was a handmade halfpipe, people skating to this song and I love when Jim belts out "Plug into her electric cool, where things bend and break and shake to the rule"...Scotland rocks!
This is like chicken noodle soup for the soul when you've been dumped. It makes you cry, but it's a good cry. I'm happy this song is here for me when I need it.
Still influencing bands today.....but the clearest influnce is Shirley Mansons Im only happy when it rains....fellow scotts......psychgrunge rules....are you sure what shoes you have on....I can tell ya
@noveltyme How exactly does this share ANY resemblance at all to the Garbage song, or for that matter...grunge? Psychgrunge? What?
Have you ever heard a single song by ANY grunge band that sounds like it can be considered similar enough to be classified in the same genre? If anything they're much closer related to post-punk revivalist contemporaries like Bloc Party
@negatyve No way.....JMC....we made up pycho grunge when I was like like 19......almost 20 yrs ago when a radiator sounded like music with a squealing cat. I love JMC and such.....it was more a comic book reference than anything....and I was drunk as hell.......the only tie in with Garbage was origin. And as for brothers fighting....fuck Oasis...JMC was the first.....you make good points.
