About Alagna being French - his mother's father immigrated from Sicily to France with his family and his father also immigrated to France from Sicily. His first language was Sicilian/Italian, and he went to school in France and of course learned French as any child in school would. So you will see he & his brothers speaking Italian in Italy and French in France. When he speaks English he has the heaviest French accent you can imagine; almost a parody of a French accent - it's very endearing.
@ezayi , pourquoi dites-vous cela?! sa voix est belle, il chante bien (en plus en francais, je l'adore!), la musique est magnifique... qu'est-ce que ne vous plait pas?!
Did he take lessons in musical flatness from Domingo? He does have a soul, which comes through in his singing, but his voice is coarse, too much of the sfogato baloney for what was once a lovely though poorly trained voice. His French is better than it used to be, but it's really not pleasant to listen to him or his gun moll, Angela G. She sang all this dramatic coloratura music at a Met concert and omitted all the cabalettas. She gets her training from I-don't-give-a-shit Caballé.
i'm interested in your comments. do you think he has lost it? or did you never rate him? i used to think he was good but now, aftre reading numerous comments, im not sure. i respect your opinion.
Oh, don't mind me, there is a lot to the voice of Roberto Alagna but he could rescue his voice from perdition if he would take a year off and study with someone really good, as his entire middle voice is placed very poorly and is starting to affect his upper notes, but technically his true problem is one of bad vocal production because vowels are more difficult in French and he sounds like he is crooning the aria rather than really singing with a good piano. God bless him anyway.
@RoyKa2010 Not his pronunciation but his rhythms and intonations are of the quality of thill or vanzo. In other words he uses italian belcanto instead of la voix mixte. He should chase down regine crespin by pigalle, who knew them both well.
Its not the b-flatshe's avoiding but rather the unkind tessitura of the piece. The aria is ideal for Florez but these days Alagna is a fairly heavy lyric tenor and so the aria is transposed. Now you can go and make fun of the tenors that have recorded the Pearl Fishers aria "Je crois entendre encore" down a full tone for the same reason--Caruso, Gigli, McCormack, Tucker, Peerce, etc. Alagna's singing of the aria is quite beautiful. Get a life!!!
You think Mr. Gluck would have liked his piece to be transposed from the way he intended? No.
Sure I agree it's beautiful, because it is. But I can Nessun Dorma a fifth down too. I really feel it's not the same.
A full tone or a semi-tone down is different from the third that this piece is taken down. Ex- For decades tenors have taken down "je crois ententre encore" and che gelida manina for example. You show me one more recording of a famous tenor taking this song down a third. Its not done.
andrewro2300: Its been a while but try Tito Schipa and Luciano Pavarotti in Italian as a start. Also try to get a copy of "Music For the Voice," by Sergius Kagen where he discusses the lower pitch in Gluck's day and strongly recommends transpoition downward. If you want a real shocker try any recording by Fernando DeLucia. When we consider a piece we have to be fair and I point out to you that Alagna sings normally as written. I have the aria in question in score it's nasty.
gaytenor: That would be cool- I can't find any recordings of Pav or Schipa sining this in Italian transposed down. I still think that you can't transpose this piece down a third, especially with someone like Florez out there who does it so flawlessly in its original key. I think the only reason that Alagna can do it is because he's already an established superstar, but I wouldn't ever walk into an addition with a famous aria like this transposed so far down, even if the tessitura is challenging
andreweo2300: Went to Amazon and found the items Tito Schipa - Airs d'Opera and Pavarotti -page 12 of his listings I think #144. I'm not sure about the pitch but if I had a pitch pipe there would be enough to determine. Both are in Italian and honestly Schipa transposed everything. I think Gigli did it also way down. You seem seriously interested so I looked for you let me know please. Florez does a fantastic job. But really Alagna is the king of french opera and a primo umo.
