A lot of people forget that it's actually about romanticism; the melancholy poetry and style of the Victorian era, the philosophy of life and death. I've met plenty of extremely accepting, compassionate people were aren't goth, and I've met plenty of goths who were pretentious, elitist jackasses who think goths are better, nicer, etc, than non-goths. Maybe you've met a lot of accepting, compassionate goths. That doesn't mean you can make a blanket generalization like that and have it be right. There's as much diversity among goths as any other group.

It made me really upset, because I think goths are really cool. One of the nicest people I ever met was a goth. Actually gothic, as we know it today as a subculture, began with a music called "gothic rock", that originated in the british punk scene of the late 70s. Gothic Rock is considered to be a subgenre of Post-punk, started by bands like Bauhaus, Siouxsie and the Banshees and The Sisters of Mercy. (also Joy Division had a big influence, although they don't belong to the subgenre). The connection with architecture, the middle age and gothic novels was made by the fans of these bands.

A lot of people forget that it's actually about romanticism; the melancholy poetry and style of the Victorian era, the philosophy of life and death. Same with Emo, Chav, Punk, etc. etc. Each are meaningless tags that shouldn't exist. People should be who they are without distinguishing people apart from eachother. True, we're all unique, so why herd people together and look at them as a whole?

@artistwithouttalent Duh, I know that! I've grown up with the pointless discrimination ever since I was 13. Don't preach to the choir. I'm well aware that society has a fucked up view on induviduality and freedom of expression, I've had to endure that fact for years. But if these labels never existed in the first place, we would have nothing to hate against. There's constant dividing of each person more and more with these labels, and it's utterly pathetic.

The points that critics make are true, to a certain extent, and we all know that it is ANYTHING but fair and balanced. That being said, everyone has done it 10,000,000 times already, and no one who has received any attention has said anything about their counterpart MSNBC

The male reporter looked somewhat disappointed when Voltaire answered all of his benign questions, like he was content on the mentality that "Goth" is evil and destructive, I find it funny how showing or telling someone that they are wrong in a very subtle, calm, and "civilized" manor, can anger someone so much..
Remember kids, pride is a crutch for the weak :)

@skepsi1992 I think the problem is, as was evident by some of his questioning, that too many people connect the Gothic culture with things that are evil and demonic. The man probably thought all Gothic people are satanists who sacrifice virgins on a full moon. Too many people are comfortable with ignorance. I am someone who identifies mostly with conservative values and morals, but I like to think I'm fairly open-minded to understanding different cultures and ideas.
