They didn't want to say that he committed suicide cause it would've been in bad taste for the show so Jack said he went away and is never coming back just to make it sound simple.
I was ten years old when Freddy Prinze died. My family watched the show regularly. My school teacher "briefly" talked about the death with the class. "No matter how successful a person is, we never truly know what is happening within them.
Honestly, though I did miss Freddy Prinze, I related a little better tothe boy, because he was in my age bracket. So though the show shifted, it wasn't hard to get in the new character played by Gabrile Melgar.
A Mexican running away from the U.S. to Mexico. Now that IS an anomaly! Usually the only people running away from the U.S. to Mexico are divorced white men fleeing the agents of Satan in black robes of hell or their blue gun thug minions.
@ivegotalongdong - We're still waiting for Your New Show so You can show us how to do it. Until then I find that it is much easier for someone like You to try to pick at a Comic & Actor who came from nothing and worked his way through the comedy club circuit to stardom & has been dead for over 30 years. I've found that most people who speak of themselves in 3rd party or have a screen name touting their supposed pecker size are idiots & Schmeckles. You could be the exception but I doubt it.
@ivegotalongdong ....well, well look at mr. negativity here. i don't know about anyone else, but i see an even BIGGER idiot....YOU. as for your ridiculous name "ivegotalongdong"....YEAH RIGHT. it's usually/always NEVER the chase for the ones who boast about it. let's see....i think i'll change my handle to ivegotaLONGERdongthanivegotalongdong. kinda catchy.
Wonderful scene..sad and well acted! Mr Albertson was showing his true feelings. i am tearing as I write this., My dad past on 11/23/2010.Very depressing.Mr alberston was a terrific actor! Fav show growing up Chico and the Man!I was in 7th grade when i first heard the horrific news! I was so sad!Horrible!
I was a teen when Freddie took his own life, and was in total disbelief. I couldn't understand how someone so talented, so successful, and so seemingly happy could take his own life. Still today, it's one of the saddest things I ever heard.
I felt so bad when I heard of Freddie Prinze's death. I obsessed over it as a kid. I even remember the song that played on the radio in heavy rotation at the time by Rufus (Featuring Chaka Khan), called, "He's on his way to Hollywood". That song always r eminds me of Mr. Prinze.
A story came out that his family had the cause of death changed from suicide to just basically being an idiot with a gun, because of their Catholic background.
@JimmyD4u69 Gabriel Melgar. The show was canceled right after this. They couldn't keep it going after this. It was on life support after Prinze committed suicide.
What you see at 3:05 is as far as the explanation goes. The show stopped production after Freddie's death I believe until this Melgar kid came on the scene.I'll check.
I was like 8 when I started watching this . As they aired. I love old shows like this. The new shows nowdays don't hold a candle to this. Why did he kill himself ? A girl ? Drugs?
WTF would cause him to do that ? It must have been bad ! Soooo sad !
@Lvduggo69 Drugs, depression, his wife had left him and taken their son. It's been said that if he were alive today, he'd probably be diagnosed as bipolar.
@storrs19 First, I saw most of these episodes when TV Land aired a weekend marathon of 'Chico and the Man' about 10 years ago (love the theme song), and to answer your question: the show's always been shot on tape, but the two Mexico episodes were shot on film...
@storrs19 - alot of exterior or location shots were done on film. This practice was quite common in the 70's. The cameras that shot on videotape were not easy to transport, and had massive wires and cables running everywhere. With film cameras, they were easy to transport (most still used lightweight 16mm cameras), and all you needed was a film cartridge and a boom mic. Plus the VTR's the studios were using were bigger than the cameras, and used massive 1 inch wide videotapes.
@RandyAKing Everybody knows how Freddie Prinze died, what would have been the point of making up a story to explain the death of the character? In fact I think it would have been of very poor taste from the show.
@TheBieberbabe95 Ed found the kid and kept calling him Chico. He explains Chico died because up to this point in the show we didn't know what happened to Freddie Prinze's character.
I was just watching Willie Wonka (1972) And I saw THE MAN as the grandfather. That brought me to you tube cause I remembered Chico and the MAn from when I was a kid. I remembered we Loved Freddie!
wow. I never saw this before. Thanks a lot for posting. When this show was being shown on American Life TV a few years ago, they only aired the first 3 seasons when Freddie Prinze was alive. It seems weird seeing Ed being sentimental, because I always thought he was a jerk before. Goes to show that deep down everyone has a heart.
I can tell how hard it was for Jack Albertson getting through that scene, he grew real fond of Freddie, and doing the show without Freddie was not the same.
@LeastLikedCritic75 To me, Jack Albertson (Ed), when he was angry and tore up Chico's van and broke the guitar in Part 1, was not only hurt at the loss of Freddie Prinze (Chico), but also Elvis Presley (who was in "Kissin' Cousins with Albertson)-maybe the guitar smashing was a subtle hint of Elvis' death. In fact, I think at this time Jack was diagnosed with colorectal cancer that would claim his life.
It is sad, How a man that good and that sweet with so much to look forward take his life like that..... I hope when you post part 3 you will let us know, Thanks so much for posting this, I know what it's like to lose a loved one at a young age, I lost my husband at the age of 49.....
They didn't want to say that he committed suicide cause it would've been in bad taste for the show so Jack said he went away and is never coming back just to make it sound simple.
