My cat does this when I try to bring him indoors when he wasn't finished sniffing. I have raccoons in my area, and so I make sure I bring him in at night when they start scavenging for food. Unfortunately night is also my cats favourite time to be outside. So when i pick him up to go in, he growls and hisses, and sings a sad song, but no matter what he never attacks me. I think that is amazing at times he can be so angry and have such an adrenaline rush and he never lashes out at me. :)
