I like. There is a genuine sincerity, warmth and earnestness about her music and vocal delivery. I also like how the instrumentation is very stripped down, the antithesis to the obnoxious bombast of much of today's hip-hop artists. She also exhibits a real, down-to-earth beauty that's a million miles away from the diva-esque posturing of her contemporaries and it's so refreshing to see. Realistically, she'll never sell millions of records, but the best artists never do.

OK fair enough if it's not your thing, but to say Speech is really bad or should be removed from Youtube is crazy. I'm not a huge fan of rap, but from my limited knowledge I know that contemporary rap is all about materialism and fake persona's, with horrible synth beats. Speech is so stripped back, honest, and emotionally engaging. She is diverse and needs to be given a chance to be understood, which is what her music is all about. A contemporary poet if you ask me!!

It's good but I have to really concentrate to listen to the lyrics and not just drift off, listen to the beat and only half listen to the words. That's the way lots of hip-hop is designed: so that you kind of listen to the words but not completely.
That's ok, but I wish there was also more of the story stelling stuff with real narrative force that Compelled you to listen through an interoduction, middle and conclusion.
Well done that Speech has won the Mercury, unfortunately I feel she needs to give more space in the songs, too much stress and too many words over the beautiful music

I'd never heard of her before I saw her in the Red Bull Tent at Bestival. The entire set was brilliant. Her rappor with the audience was spot on and her band were awesome. My friends and I were all massively impressed!
Have to confess not really into this genre of music but decided to see her in Big Top at Bestival and was very impressed. She seemed to have good rapport with audience and I was not alone in being pleasantly surprised. Thought her band were great too. To me she had a healthy confidence about her which did not come across as arrogance - and genuinely wish Speech all the luck in the world.

i think some of you guys need educating, so here goes; ever heard of creativity. the intruments and arrangement is amazingly creative and the better known she becomes as a result of the award the more there will be a shift towards creative arrangement rather than relying entirely on what's gone before such as the currently very, very tired electro pop or guitar pop.
there are a whole raft of instruments out there but most artists are too fucking lazy to create from scratch.

It's good but I have to really concentrate to listen to the lyrics and not just drift off, listen to the beat and only half listen to the words. That's the way lots of hip-hop is designed: so that you kind of listen to the words but not completely.
That's ok, but I wish there was also more of the story stelling stuff with real narrative force that Compelled you to listen through an interoduction, middle and conclusion.

I'd never heard of her before I saw her in the Red Bull Tent at Bestival. The entire set was brilliant. Her rappor with the audience was spot on and her band were awesome. My friends and I were all massively impressed!

Have to confess not really into this genre of music but decided to see her in Big Top at Bestival and was very impressed. She seemed to have good rapport with audience and I was not alone in being pleasantly surprised. Thought her band were great too. To me she had a healthy confidence about her which did not come across as arrogance - and genuinely wish Speech all the luck in the world.

i think some of you guys need educating, so here goes; ever heard of creativity. the intruments and arrangement is amazingly creative and the better known she becomes as a result of the award the more there will be a shift towards creative arrangement rather than relying entirely on what's gone before such as the currently very, very tired electro pop or guitar pop.
there are a whole raft of instruments out there but most artists are too fucking lazy to create from scratch.

This is a disgrace to youtube let alone mercury prize. The award should crown an artists achievements not be a launch pad for a career.
