I wish Harry was still with us. But he would have died at the shit that is going on in this country now. We are definitely a Dance Band on the Titanic. Everybody sing, "Nearer My God to Thee."
he's seriously the greatest singer/song writer who has ever lived. No one can tell a story like Harry. Sadly I was around 1 year old when he passed away. My mom raised me to his music since i was about 9 years old. His albums don't have one or 2 hits, everydamn song I've heard him sing has grown on me. I wish I could have seen him live.....actually hurts that I know I wont ever be able to....I'll see ya when I get there Harry, thanks for your music and for your humanitarisom. Rip my friend
Harry was the best, and the work he did for world hunger was most remarkable. He could never understand why people in this world went hungry ,with all of the things we waste. You can always count on the cheap seats! RIP Harry.
Love the studio version of this song. Talk about socially relevent, this is it. Wish I knew how to blip it but I'm a technomoron. It's just one of those songs that people would really like if more people heard it.
The audio quality on this one doesn't do the song justice.
Love, Love, Love this! I'm sure the way they played it in the movie was close to how they actually, played it but it's the story Chapin tells that is so great!
I'VE NEVER HEARD THIS ONE BEFORE. THANKS FOR POSTING IT. MY GRANDMOTHER'S STEPFATHER WAS WHAT THEY CALLED A 'FIREMAN' -THE GUY WHO STOKED THE ENGINES- ON THE TITANIC, BUT WAS TRANSFERRED OFF JUST BEFORE SHE SAILED.
That's our fed govt. They're in the Dance Band on the Titanic. Only diff is we, the people, see the iceberg but our dear president & govt seem oblivious.
Harry Chapin was both a great musician and humanitarian. If memory serves me correctly, he was 1 of the 1st to set up or support food banks back in the late 70s. He donated much of his income to charity, and was driving a VW Golf when he died. But what I'll always remember are how his songs could make me laugh, cry, touch my heart and smile all in the same song. Not to mention while singing along at the same time. May God continue to bless you in heaven for your humanitarian efforts on earth.
yea I was 18 and I saw him and his brother alone because the band got snowed in... it was awsome I still get a tear when I listen to him..the worrld whould be a better place if he was still here
I'm 42. I cant remember how old I was, then..probably about 10 or 11...Harry played a show and it was just him, no back up band or anything. Small theater, cant remember where. We were sitting way in the upper deck and he requested people from the audience to help sing mr tanner. I ran down but didnt make it in time. He then stopped singing and asked if someone was scrambling down from the cheap seats, the usher pushed me to go. I got to stand right next to him and sing. I will never forget it.
Thanks for uploading. I love this song and the album is a classic. I saw Harry in concert only a few weeks before his untimely death. It was shocking. I'll always have fond memories of this great writer and performer.
Unbegoodgollylievable! This just may be my all time fave from Harry C., in fact the entire l.p. was on the lifesaver list! Harry and the boys pulled me through more than a couple of close calls, since then I honestly have not listened to this until today, pleasantly surprised and equallly grateful, you bet! So, as always thanks to the person responsible for the upload, namely bearznorthCATHY, thanks to you folks at youtube for the space, RIP Harry, and:ROCK ON SHINDIGGERS!
Saw him 16 times live. Awesome. Okemo Mt, Cape Cod, Beantown, NYC....... This was a very special human being. He squeezed 30 hours into every day. If energy and drive could be measured in pounds Harry Chapin had a metric ton on the nearest possible challenger.
Great site. My younger brother turned me onto to Harry. Him and I were to see Harry one weekend but I had to play in my own band that night. That decision I will always regret!! Thanks for keeping this alive.
Hi all new to this site, but as a "Harry" fan from the beginning ( Heads n Tails )and still -- thanks for all the postings.
Saw Harry twice when he toured the UK in the late 70's and he sang this from his then "New" album-- the greatest singer/songwriter ever ,but to see him live --wow--no-one came near. There are few artists?? who truly changed or influenced peoples lives ,but Harry did. My proudest moment was meeting and talking to him after a concert .
I was also lucky to see him live less than a year before he left us. Greatest singer/songwriter ever. RIP, my friend. Can't believe it's been 27 years now.
neither can I. I am 21 and have listened all my life. I love Harry and his songs are beauty in and of themself. I am so glad someone else feels the joy. Peace :)
Hey, my dad got me into this in 1978, I was 13 ! Damn, we loved that music. My dad died this year, aged 70 - the music still stands. It's great. Enjoy !
The Chapin family are still doing shows that keep this music alive. The shows usually consist of Tom, Steve, Big John Wallace and the children of Tom, Harry and Steve. The shows are awesome. You can find the schedule at Tom Chapin's web site.
Thanks for the post! I love Harry. I have two boys who are 7 and I play Harry all the time for them and they love it! I even had a teacher say she was blown away that they would know who Harry Chapin was. I replied "well you know, Harry was the best!"
Thanks so much for posting. I remember being about 10yrs when my big sister saved and bought the record, I loved it. Ahh such great memories from such a great, loving and generous man. Thanks from down under.

Thanks to Harry I became interested in the Titanic.
I discovered I am related to one of the builders and a survivor as well.
I have read nearly every book published on the Titanic without Harry I never would have such a great hobby.
Harry was the soundtrack to my childhood and I still listen to him.

Got kiss Harry at a fundraiser concert for some charity - a buck a kiss. Cool, huh? Heavens that was way back in the early '80s!
