@CelesteK You are right. WTVT was owned by Oklahoma City based Gaylord Broadcasting from 1958 to 1987 when Gaylord sold WTVT to Gillett Communications. In 1993 Gillett filed for bankruptcy and WTVT was sold to New World Communications and the following year the Great Tampa Bay Area TV Affiliation Switch transformed WTVT from a CBS affiliate to a FOX affiliate which led to FOX buying New World Communications and WTVT being a FOX network O&O as it is today.
Man, I have been looking for this for years. WBTV, our CBS affiliate in Charlotte, would show this film during their signoff on Sunday nights/Monday mornings. It was the only day they'd show it, typically, although they occasionally show it on Saturday nights/Sunday mornings. Every other night, they showed the SSB.
Dean Drapin, who worked as an announcer at WTVT, and was also a co-host for their midday show "Pulse Plus" during the late '70s, is heard doing the sign-off.
It sure brings back the memories when WTVT was a CBS affiliate and the days of no infomercials. I have lived in the Tampa/St. Petersburg area all my life and I have seen Tampa area television as it evolved over the years.
By the way, who was the voiceover for this sign off? I believe it may be Jerry Krumholtz but I am not sure.
Thanks for posting this on YouTube - it sure brought back the memories!
Nice. Not many people have reliable, good Tampa TV clips. WTVT became Fox in 1994 after a 3-affiliate shakeup caused stations to be switched left and right, NBC on WFLA was the only one that kept its original affiliate.
very nice to see the old channel 13 logo circa 1976 very nice find if you have anymore signoffs from anymore of the tampa bay tv stations please put it on thank you very much
I think they started using this in '76 also. I was a kid & remember thinking the 13 stars also had something to do w/the Bicentenial Celebrations. I often fell asleep on the couch in front of the TV, & when I heard that hymn, it woke me up, because I KNEW that scary static was about to come on. I'd run & turn the TV off, until the alarm woke me up at 5:30. Then I'd turn it back on to hear muzac & Roy Leep or Howard Shapiro voice over the radar, until Breakfast Beat w/Ernie Lee came on at 6:00.
This has to predate Sony v Universal, since that decision overrides their "you can't video tape our shows" assertion. I concur that this probably predates 1981, when I moved to the Tampa/StPete/Clw DMA.
@NEPatriot That site shows they used a different logo the following year too- this tape is actually one of the older "K" varieties so it could have actually been recorded then, but after this it appears that it was recorded over something else from circa 1982 (I didn't check what speed it was on either, it would've had to have been Beta I if it was taped in 1976.)
Did he say the "Gaylord?"Broadcasting?

This was WTVT's "Original 13" logo, which was used from 1975 to 1978.

@byrd56 Thanks for the tip! I wasn't sure if it was Krumbholtz or Drapin that did the sign off announcement.

This is probably 1976/77, but sometimes stations used these longer despite logo changes.

The Gaylord Broadcasting Company also owned TV Station WUAB Channel 43 (now My-43) in Cleveland,Ohio at the time.

So I see "The Navy Hymn" was used by at least three stations - KNBC Los Angeles, KHQ Spokane, and here.

That logo came from 1976, according to The Big 13 website...dedicated to the CBS-days of WTVT.
