Mike is actually a Conservative Republican, and a Protestant Christian very involved in his church and has studied apologetics and sites C.S. Lewis as a huge influence.
Mike is actually a pretty conservative guy (all things considered). They are all Midwesterners, some have just spent a little more time in the city than others.
Notice there is a huge rift between the cast of that show. I'm not a know all end all expert but I've watched some comiccom vids with Mike and Trace and Kevin and then here is another convention and none of them are there (I think) and none of these guys Joel and Frank and Pearl were at the other event. It's like the serious liberals flocked to Joel and the more normal liberals (because they are ALL liberal) flocked to Mike? Wierd man, just wierd.
He really, REALLY can't write dialogue. At the very least the first few years sucked, no offense to MST3K. It's just for being a stand-up comedian he seems not to have any confidence in the material.
@KingOfUm Well, he had spent all of the previous night making his props and set (Hence his constantly tired expression) for the pitch, so of course he'll be delivering his lines a bit weakly.
Plus, back then, the riffing had no script, it was pure improv.
@femoman I know it was improvised back then, but I mean mostly that he doesn't really seem to 'play the part', so to speak. I'm just not convinced, I guess.
Crow's eyes make him a little bit creepy-lookin' in this one.

And there's no real rift or bad blood between the two. They're just doing their own projects and respect each other's work
