Grew up during the era. 'Also was a lot of futurist architecture going up. If car and building design are a sign, now days Americans have given up on the futurist vision and are clinging to "safe" traditional designs and thoughts.
I remember the Chrysler Turbo. I rode my bicycle to a shopping mall in the next town to see it demonstrated. They would balance a nickel on the engine and start it up to demonstrate how smooth it was. It produced tons of exhaust, though. Just like standing behind a jet engine. A bunch of these in a bumper to bumper traffic jam would probably roast everyone on the freeway.
I remember all of these cars from when I was young. I also remember all the bad press they received! The fins were considered pedestrian killers, the bubble tops would roast you in summer and you'd freeze in winter. The doors that opened upward would hit the ceiling in your garage and decapitate you if the door lift failed. And how would you get out after an accident with those fancy doors? Three wheels was considered dumb from the get-go yet every genius thinks they can make it work.
The car at 1:00 was made into the batmobile for the TV show. Bubble tops never caught on because they acted like a giant magnifying glass and you were the ant.
yeah, better kiss that kind of creativity good by. With the retards designing them today it likely we'll all be driving around in plastic, jellybeans on wheels.
During the late 50's and early 60's. GM made alot of Air-plane inspired car concepts because the CEO/Head desighner was air-plane crazed and obsessed.
I remember most of these cars from my youth. This was an amazing stroll down memory lane, but today I have to wonder WHAT WERE THEY THINKING?? I admit when I was fascinated by these creations, I was still riding a bicycle (anyone remember English Racers?). Today I look at them and try to picture myself parallel parking one, or watching my wife back one into the garage on a dark night. These were all vain attempts to make the perfect car, about a decade before they finally made the DATSUN 240Z!
@StenloseBK dont think u really get the point ,, european cars suck,, they always have , always will .. and if u look at these concepts almost everyone of them has something that actually ended up in real cars .. besides how come american cars from the sixties and back are way more expensive all over the world than european cars ..
there are some cars in the video that look futuristic but they also look old and are detailed to the maximum, today they say make a ball with 4 wheels and its a car it sucks,I wish I was born in the 20's so that I could see the evolution of the car and live trough the good years I would be happy and could die in 1999 4 years after I was really born, the future sucks but I'll still be happy till cars start flying over my head
I was always under the impression that when George Barris built the first Batmobile, he completely changed the bodywork of the Lincoln Futura; I stand corrected.
@Shoknifeman Not all that many style changes between the Lincoln Futura and "Batmobile Mk I." Which is what makes the original Batmobile even funnier than I remember it

Amasing~This cars have more metal in their interiors than a lot of cars are made out of.Way cool~Corvette is about hte only one that didn't get alot of change~
if detroit was smart they would dust off all these designs, update them for modern electronics and safety standards, put hydro in them (lots of space!), with lightweight bodies but sturdy frames and get them into show rooms. I don't know anyone would wouldn't want to drive a really cool looking car reminiscent of these designs.
Women have been driving since the beginning, mind you, they didnt drive in large numbers until Charles Kettering invented the electric starter in 1912 (Cause most women at the time found hand cranking their cars difficult)
Yes, Harley Earl (Head of design at GM from 1927-58) created the "Tail fins" for the '48 Caddy after seeing the twin tail fighter planes during WW2, and soon jet plane design was replacing the art-deco look cars had used since 1934.
Later, jet plane design replaced prop plane design, such as the vents under the headlights of the early 50s Oldsmobile 88s (They were designed after the air intakes on jet engines of the day); and of course, the 50s show cars took that to the extreme
that was the 1955 Ford/Lincoln Futura, 11 years later (1966), it was bought by George Barris and customized into the Batmobile for the TV show(Yes, its the same car, in its original body style)
Besides the cool-looking but impractical twin-bubble canopy and enormous fins, another distinctive feature of the Lincoln Futura was its shimmering pearlescent paint job. Unfortunately, the irridescent effect didn't show up on color film, so the car looks dead white in photos. That's why it was painted red for its appearance in the 1959 movie "It Started With a Kiss" starring Glenn Ford and Debbie Reynolds.
I read years ago in Hot Rod Mag.that many of the concept cars were not crushed as reported. they were sold to oil rich Arabs, many also reside in private collections, not available to the public.some are in corporate museums.Ford has several on display in Dearborn
Yes, the Packard Predictor, with its thin vertical grille, reverse-rake rear window, and "cathedral" taillights, was -- well, interesting, if not exactly beautiful. The styling of the 1957 Packards would have been based on the Predictor had Packard not gone belly-up in the summer of 1956. Instead, the last "Packards" were just tarted-up Studebakers with a Packard nameplate slapped on. It was a degrading end to one of America's most prestigious auto makers.
You can say that again, the Packardbaker was a sad end to a grand car (One of the 3 "P"s)...mind you, it wasn't terrible looking in '57.....would have made a great Stude :p Designer Richard Teague said it best :"When they put my beautiful Packard tailights on that tired old Stude body, it was enough to make a magot vomit!"
Car are awesome, but, where you'd find that Johnnie B Goode track?...It almost sounds like an out-take of the eventual record...Great piano solo!!!; I like this version better than the published version...Thanks!!
I wish they could have used something else for the Batmobile besides the Lincoln Futura. It was "worthless" in 1966 when George Barris bought it and--well, you know...
One concept car was to be powered by a small nuclear reactor stored in the trunk. Can you imagine a rear-end collision?! "Chopper Dave, here. An accident on Fifth and Elm; all downwind residents are being advised to roll up their windows for the next several hours..."
Allot of advanced technology goes into the making of concept cars and much of it infringes on others patents or is just to revealing to competitors. So in not all but many cases manufactures destroy them. Also since the cars are very experimental they tend to fail many safety or emissions test. The reasons they are destroyed can range from styling, technical issues, legal issues & even reasons unknown. But I assure you it's not, as you put it "BS".
