I think people really need to listen to what Bono says about changing up their tone in the late 90's because music, especially Black R&B was creating the best sound, lyrics and had better collaboration that reached diverse audiences...This is the second interivew I heard Bono refer to black music about its quality and impact...
I think R.E.M., Radiohead, and Smashing Pumpkins are all strong contenders along with U2 for best band of the 90's. R.E.M. is also the only challenger to U2 for best band of the 80's, but I'd safely give the edge (no pun intended) to U2 for that decade.
