my grandmother has this song on cassette tape, and she plays it over and over now that she found it. she claims it to be "hysterical" i dont really see the funny side of it
if anyone has ever ben on Lower Broadway in Nashville will understand this song. Everytime I hear this song I see the emptiness and starkness of 4th and Broadway. Politics aside right is right and Larry Gatlin was right with the message of this song.
For me, the best Gatlin Bros song ever. Larry was pure genius. But on a local note. When this was released, Of course local entertainers had to perform it. No one in Augusta Ga would perform it because of a man that fronted Tender Lovin Care of the Oasis Lounge. The man, Carrol Mathews.
saw hjm around 1981, 1982 at the Ryman. He said he took a lot of flack for this song. He went on to explain the motivation for this song came from the stark reality he saw amongst the homeless alcoholics he encountered while in Nashville. If I remember correctly, he meant for the song to be controversial, in hopes to bring attention to the seriousness of matter. As for the Nashville Rescue Mission: God bless you for the bread of life you still break with those in need! Keep the faith!
Heard this in the early '80s on WRSU/FM in New Brunswick, where to this day they have a classic country show on weekends. Later, saw Gatlin 7-4-85 at Hershey Park Arena. for some reason, he left this classic out of his repertoir that night. The concert was the undisputed highlight of a camping trip that lasted 4 miserable rainy days.
Only time at a concert, that i every yelled to sing a certain song, but when I did, larry toldd audience ,that if anyone asked for it to play the song. He then give the intro and went into song . Shame you caint hear this on radio.
The Gatlins lost their rep due to drugs.... Larry was such a smartass, too bad they were putting out some good songs, like this one, all the gold, etc...
Funny thing is, Larry Gatlin was saved and you cant really buy this song any more. Who cares if they have to listen to preaching if they can get food. thats a bit of politically correct bull crap, and you are the problem. Spend a couple of weeks on the street and then decide what you would do for some food.
If the liberal athetist would have a soup kitchen, then they wouldn't have to listen to a sermon. But Fortunately Christians are giving them soup and a place to sleep at night. They can't get it anywhere else.
@lebderm Well said, lebderm. Speaking of which, where exactly does the liberal atheist think they're going to find soup and a place to sleep when this situation befalls them? Remember, the disease of addiction/alcoholism knows no political affilliation, religion, or socioeconomic status. That said, a few of the others posting comments here should be REAL CAREFUL passing judgement on "those people".
Carol Mathews of Tender Lovin Care Augusta Ga. You performed this song as well as Larry Gatlin. I finished accross the street at Mingles and always came you see you. You would go into this song when I entered. LOL I didn t drink the wine but I did and still drink the Tequlia. Much has passed. But the memories are still strong. Carol, you were one of the best. Love to see you again. Your fan Johnny Clarke. Midnight Express
Its just a damn disgrace that here in the U.S. about the richest Country in the World that soup kitchens are even needed or that there are homeless people.
Also noticed in the song that prior to gettin a bowl of soup that they had to hear preaching ect. Sad that in many cases to just eat something, the ones who go to these places have to hear religion pushed at them.

@cowboy145 He does still sing it. Heard him do it live about 6 months ago. I don't necessarily agree with his politics, but he's a damn good tenor.

A CHICAGO RADIO PERSONALITY FOUND HIMSELF IN A LOT OF TROUBLE FOR PLAYING THIS. MAYBE MANAGEMENT SHOULD HAVE VIEWED THIS AS A P.S.A.
