Idris is ace, I love the way he has one foot up just like on the Welsh flag. "Do you know Land Of My Fathars" (trying to type a Welsh accent). I love Welsh dragons.
I'm 17 next week and none of my friends know what the hell I'm talking about when I mention Ivor The Engine! Any ideas why this might be. I remember watching this when I was REALLY young, but maybe I had it on VHS. I dunno.
This was the first episode that i remember in any detail - loved that little dragon almost as much as Ivor. - and I love Wales too, esp North Wales - tis where i am fortunate enough to live.
Ah, yes, we all like Idris the Dragon. This is very nice and I do like Wales. In fact, when I die, I want to be cremated and have my ashes spread there. Ok, a bit extreme but I really, really, really like Wales.
They don't make them like this any more, which is a shame. It's a same they don't repeat these classic shows like they did when I was growing up (I'm only 18 lol)
Frankly, and I say this in all seriousness, I am an Atheist but I hope there is a heaven simply so kindhearted people like Postgate get their just rewards for touching so many.
Does anyone know who provided Idris with his singing voice? It's beautiful.
PS Yesterday after we heard the sad news of oliver potgate's death, my colleagues & I were all racking our brains to remember the dragon's name. Wikipedia to the rescue!
soundzok, I think it is because thy were made with love and a thought for their audience... not for a quick buck and to sell toys, like a lot of the modern stuff.
That's so beautiful. I remembered the dragon hatching in the boiler, but no the choir practice. It was lovely and oddly moving. How weird in a four and half minute children's cartoon. They really don't make anything of this quality now.
I still secretly like to think that if I search the mountains of wales, ( I think it would be in the berwins somewhere) that there would be a "lost" one with a crater and a small wisp of smoke........
I Actually read part of Oliver Postgate's Autobiography, and he was saying about this that when it came to recording the singing, he wasn't sure how they were supposed to do it, but Olwen Jones said she knew of a small Welsh Choir in Hampstead which still sang, so they contacted them and they happily agreed to be recorded singing among other things "Mae Haen Wlad Fy Nhadau"
Cold walk back from school made better with a cup of hot chocolate, a plate of biscuits and Ivor the engine watched with my nose 3"s from the TV...ace.
Just back from a weeks holiday round Snowdonia. I've travelled on The Festiniog railway twice now, first time 8 years ago. My inspiration for going was always this cartoon. Great memories.
There is a mountain in north wales called Gadair Idris which literaly translated means Idris' chair named after a giant in welsh mythology called idris
I was wondering, does anyone know the title of the peice of music sung before "Land of my Fathers"? Many thanks for uploading these.. they are quite wonderful...
thank you i used to watch this in nz as a child 31 now and thanks to you enjoying each night with my 3 year old son

I'd have loved to have been Oliver Postage or Peter Fermin's grandchild. Think of all the great stories they would tell.
The only piece of sanity left is listening to their tales for 5 mins. A thousand thanks for up loading

Loving the cod Welsh accents! Mr. Dinwiddy gets extra points, though - hilarious!!!
"I don't know what it is!"

Lol, I agree totally!
Dinwiddy's line about "I know, I've read books, I am educated!" is one of my favourites in Ivor the Engine! Makes me chuckle every time! :)
