Some nice cuts there for a 1st timer ! Kudos! I hope to have a proper master as soon as i finish my sword collection so far i am bound to my bokken and kendo stick
There are a lot of different reasons kiriyagi cuts don't work. It can be something as simple as being too far away (have to be close so you're cutting with the 2/3rd part of the blade, to far away and you're just knicking it with the tip). Then it gets into body mechanics (lifting and twisting from the hips). There is also follow through (i.e. are you flicking at the end with the wrist or cutting the entire way up almost into Jo-dan gammi. These are the common reasons, hope they help!
I was told tameshigiri was pretty hard doing it the first time (haven't done it yet, planning to do it next summer). Though you seem to do it very well. Good job!
It is very hard the first time. The following times you start figuring out what you did wrong, why things didn't work, and you're less nervous swinging around a sharp pokey think.
Although it is your first time and it is not perfect, you are better than most tameshigiri masters of youtube.
Change your teacher, he sucks.

Would you have finished with a Nami Gaeshi if your sensei had allowed it? Or a Tsubame Gaeshi?

What is the material you are cutting? Are those type of swords always used with two hands?
jekylfoot 2 years ago
We are cutting tatami mats, also called tatami omote.
Yes, these shinkens are typically used with two hands. There are some instances where you strike with one hand, as well as nitoken (two sword).

When you are using a katana, you don't need to use 2 hands all the time. Some people wields it with one hand

Thank you! Of course the video didn't show the mistakes, mostly the yuko (speeling?) cuts that just... didn't cut.
