i saw them perform at all points west a few years ago, and i gotta say--being a PART of the audience when they perform this song was godly. being immersed in the bass, its like you cant hear anything but the SONG, youre deaf to the other people
i love how everyone else is crouching down on the floor and hunching over computer while thom is going crazy. makes it seem like his fellow band members are afraid of him :P
Whinning, acusing him of random shit, all because he wouldn't give an autograph.
Radiohead are one of the most criticly acclaimed groups ever, making it hard for me to believe he walks around trying to make people like him by talking bitching about global warming, if he was trying so hardto make people like him, you probably would have gotten his autograph.

Great performance. I always used to wonder about Radiohead's (rather, Thom's) drug use, but after hearing this song, I think it's pretty obvious to anyone who's ever dropped lsd. Watch Thom during the first repetition of "When the walls bend with your breathing". He definitely knows.
@CplBronson They also refer to the respective colours of democrats and republicans, liberals and conservatives; they are the most common colours of opposing political parties in many western countries. "they will suck you down to the other side to the shadows blue and red"...I think it's a very vivid picture of being sucked into political BS and forgetting about what is true and what is real.
Joy Division is a big influence on this song even the dancing...Just saw radiohead last night in Camden and it was amazing. They played this and it was the shit these guys are ahead of their time and for a band that changes so much to still be together is amazing in itself.
sorry please dont take this offensivley just think of me as a radiohead noob (really i just dont own all the albums and i should but taxes are keeping me from getting their albums :( ) but what album is this on its so fun :)
It's funny, it seems that Jonny and Ed are giving electroshocks with their machines and Thom is receiving them which explain his uncontrollable dance moves.
1. I LOVE THIS SONG SO MUCH! i hope they play it at lollapalooza. (and i also hope i can find enough money to go in time.)
2. AHAHAHAHA @ thom's dancing. oh my god, that's so amazing. usually when someone does something like that during a performance it tires them out and effects the quality of their singing, but thom is god so it doesn't stop him from blowing our minds. :)
My favorite video when it comes to Thom's dancing. Gotta love the contrast between Thom and Phil, especially around 1:27. Phil's thinking "Can't dance, must concentrate ,jealous of Thom..." :P
They did this at V festival in 2006...i started screaming when the bass sample started, people looked at me like i was mental, was worth the scream tho
Love the bass thing that they have added in the live versions. Seriously, I almost can't listen to the album version because I miss the groovy bassline so much!
@NihilAnalysis why do you make clear you like girls? i mean.... there´s nothing wrong if you say the word sexy to describe a man and you are a man also, is there?
Thom most certainly does NOT need dancing lessons!! He dances like no one is watching, it's the music flowing through his limbs and I think it is Love, and some of the most passionate, rythmic, interpretive dancing I've ever seen!
During the Rh concert in 2003 in Bergamo, Thom said that this song was dedicated to the italian right governament. "This song is dedicate to MR. Belusconi"..I was there! Thanks Thom
anyways, i freakin' love The Gloaming live, but still i can't say i prefer it to the album version. i'd say i like them both equally, but for different reasons. the bass line in the live version is kick-ass for sure!
I was at the 2006 show in Boston..the Gloaming was wicked excellent. It was funny though, the bass line was off for about 45 seconds into the song before Thom ran behind the synth to fix it. We thought he was done singing the song or something..hah.
Anyway, to answer your question, yes this song is amazing live. It makes you dance like Thom.
apparently, while introducing the song during one of the gigs, Thom Yorke said that it's about the rise of fascism in the right wing.
it is rather obvious that the song has a political meaning...murderers, you're murderers, we're not the same as you..shadows blue and red...they will suck you down to the other side...etc etc. yes, fascism.
by the way, have you heard DJ Shadow's remix of it, with Bush's "vocals" at the beginning? it's ace.
This is one of the best versions of this song!
