I appreciated this 100%. it was done with clarity and without any bs. It was toned with the proper respect for those who have fought and gave all for our country and he gave the emotion required for that. I've played the trumpet before. Well done Preston. Carry on.

I completely disagree with mymusclecar. Why is it that singers can sing the anthem however they want, with whatever breaks in between. Patriotism should be expressed in what ever form it takes. Not the notes that john phillip sousa wrote 200 years ago. When you have a degree in trumpet performance, i would expect this guy to be better than an average high schooler.
I agree that playing it straight - especially when asked as it seems he was - can be just as impressive as doing all kinds of "frilly" things with it. It is, after all, the national anthem and there's a certain amount of respect that needs to be kept with it. Don't lose the song itself in all the window dressing! There's other versions out here on YouTube (Jesse McGuire and Arturo Benson come to mind immediately) that have "just enough" flavor to it.
I like it when it is played mostly as written but adding a few things. When I play it for a huge crowd, I usually add a few grace notes and a jump to double C in the second to last measure. It doesn't really change the song but it makes it more exciting and makes people remember that it was a trumpet playing it!!!
Excellent! I like it when it is played straight and not jazzed up. There are plenty of other songs out there that can be played jazzy. Too many people get out there and try to prove what they can do but it is not respectful. It is our National Anthem, treat it with respect. Thank you Preston.
@MyMusclecar i agee that going out there and showing off on the national anthem with the crazy stuff is not respectful if its like adam rapa im good but like on this video where he uses alot of tongue on the national anthem in my opinion it sounds kinda beginery cause you try to play exactly how its written on the page at least let it flow out dont try and play it just let it flow out and yes i do know what im talking about
There is a big difference between a double buzz and fatigue. I was gigging 5 and 6 nights a week in New Orleans and the surrounding areas, so believe me I wasn't winded. I played strait because Benson asked me too.
Look, there's a lot of pressure playing in that type of setting. You're in front of thousands of people, on TV, and all eyes and ears are on you, so making it all the way through is a good thing.
If everyone is honest, he BARELY made it through. His lips were shot halfway through the piece and his tone was paper thin.
Thanks for the comments. I turned in several versions of how I could play it to the etertainment director...Benson asked me to play it straight, so I did.

@superbaldcoach Agree, even Mr. Jazz Wynton didn't touch or mess with the national anthem at the superbowl in 85.
