It's important for one team to have a very good goalkeeper for them to win big time, Look at italy , Spain , France (retired Fabien Barthez) etc. This I think the one of the biggest reason why England can't win a world cup. England needs a world class goalkeeper if they want to win but i don't think they even have one. They have Beckham,Gerrard,Terry,Lampard,­Rooney and more and I think the missing piece in that puzzle is a goalkeeper.

The best english Goalkeeper IS Joe Hart. He should've played already instead of James and Green who both make far too many mistakes to be the goalkeeper for a country that is competing for World Cup glory. I still don't think hes among the greats like Casillas, Buffon, Cech, etc. But he still is our best goalkeeper at the moment. About my comment about us trying for the Cup, it's very sketchy...

Without doubt there are some talented English players around but they seem to lack a winning mentality. If these same players were German, not only would I expect them to do well in this World Cup, I'd give them a good chance of winning it! Look at the 2 squads; England's is far stronger but who do you think will go further? Something's gotta be wrong there!

Joe Hart has to be England No.1 for the World Cup. Yeah of course he lacks the international experience but what better way is there for him to learn? Chances are he will make a mistake, possibly fatal but can any one really see either James or Green going through the tournament without doing likewise? Forget about Robinson as well, Hart is potentially the best English keeper in many a year, he's had a brilliant season with a very average team. Capello's got to go with him

And when he makes one mistake he seems to give up and have a whole sucession of them. Hart is probably the best goalie but none of them dominate the penalty box like they should..

Capello has to take some of the blame for this. Hart should already be established by now. Like you say, you can never depend fully on James. Often his performance seems to depend on whether he's happy with his hairstyle or not! Green has made a lot of mistakes & lacks the necessary confidence. I foresee problems.

That said, England have yet again by far the easiest group from which to progress from even with a bunch of third rate keepers.

Looking at that squad, you've got to admit there aren't too many you'd want your daughter going out with. Unfortunately they seem typical of young English people. Gordon banks was a true hero to people of my generation. He had a natural talent that he honed to brilliance. If he was playing today I believe he would still be a world clas keeper whatever his size or what type of ball was used.

I hate it when ex pros say the ball is lighter now. It gives the wrong information. The regulation weight has not changed. What has changed is how much water the ball absorbs (rain soaked leather!) and how aerodynamic they are which is why they move in the air more.

If I was to answer Gordon as to why they allowed it. Get Gordon (legend) to stand next to a modern goalkeeper and see the difference in size. People are getting taller and more athletic but the goals dont change size.

@kevbomb The FA and FIFA rules for the weight of a ball have never changed.  There is a min and max but it has not changed and the last world cup ball was nearer the max weight IIRC. It moved differently in the air because of its aerodynamics, the smoother the surface the more it dips and moves in the air at times. They keep developing ways of making it smoother with less panels. Look it up if you dont believe me.
