incase anyones interested, the toxin the cowfish produces is an ictheocryno toxin called chorline cloride, its a vitamin in the B complex and it breaks down fish cells :)
they say best way to keep these is in a 4ft x 2ft x 2ft species tank if your going to put in other fish nothing boistrous best to go with sea horse's or pipefish
Advice please i am just about to buy a stunning Cowfish, BUT i am also sick of hearing the bad storys regarding killing all your stock if stressed to much ?
Is this true and how likely is this to happen ?
My set up is over a year old now and stocked with nice soft corals and some stunning fish, i would hate to loase any..
I think cowfishes should be called mini-subs. They are my new fascination... They don't swim in water... They maneuver.. like a submarine. I wonder.. Who is the captain in control ;) heheh
Agreeing. Fugu and boxfish are fish with no scales and when hold also in aquariums with small space excessive stress will make them sick. Been keeping boxfish and fugu for 3 years now and these fish need space if you wanna see them happy
for someone that works in a pet shop you dont really know much. Cowfish are not a easy fish to keep at all, for one they are very prone to sickness, can gulp air and not be able to get back down, too much flow in the tank can hurt them, they will eat corals, and they will nuke and kill everything in your tank if they die. so yea, plz dont talk about things u dont kno about
I've had two of these in the past, by far my most favorite fish. I love them, they are so unique and beautiful. I saw one once which was almost a foot long if you count the length of the horns. It was awesome. nice vid. 5 Stars!
You are about 100% wrong...It is just not effective to go out to a reef to catch fish to sell and then illegally sell them to buyers. Fish are incredibly easy to breed and it is much much more cost effective to breed them in captivity and sell them. I'm willing to bet that your sources are extremest groups that really have no idea what they are talking about.
I know huh! these damn extremists have no idea what their talking about! they treat animals better then they treat humans! I own fish and even I know its much easyer to breed them in captivity
Jesus... O_O

Would this do good in a 14 gallon for a salt water beginner?
pistolv2 2 years ago
lol no this is not the fish for a beginner, especially for such a small tank!

would a cowfish be fine in a 30g tank with live rock and a few coral ?
natenate88 2 years ago
@natenate88 no, they need about 120 gallons, are very territorial, and when stress produce a deadly toxin, def not for biginners

Whould a cowfish fit in a ten gallon?
Luke0zz 2 years ago
No way...they need a lot of space even though they are small. Make sure you read up on them before buying one.

Cowfish are actually pretty easy as far as saltwater goes.
But unless you really know what you're doing, don't make a saltwater tank below 30 gal.
I have a 10g saltwater tank, myself but I work in a pet store fish department.

I hope their natural populations are not endangered by the horrific aquarium trade.
