dudes, 2012 isn't the end of the world. Up to a report a saw the other day in History channel, discovery channel, and national geographic, the three of them agreed on one thing. The Mayan, Aztecs, and many other ancient culture books point out 2012 as the year we are gonna see a unknown cataclysm and also we're gonna witness the birth year of a new race. 8.8 was huge, but there was a 9.5 quake in Chile back in 1960. Quit ramping, quakes like these move some ground and change a small balance in the Earth that makes it a few MILLIseconds shorter or longer. :)

Jimmy the way earthquakes are calculated for magnitude was changed 25years ago. Under the richter scale which is what the 1960 quake was measured, the recent earthquake would have been a 9.5. That may not seem to be much of a change, but in reality it is about 1000 times stronger than what was reported.If you are going to talk history of quakes, make sure you use an asterik as to what scale was being used.You're comparing apples with oranges!Search "moment magnitude scale".

@BabyJustWin it's the opposite, man. Chile's 1960 earthquake was initially calculate as 8.6 Richter, later on it came out as Mw 9.5, the largest ever recorded. Mw came out specifically because traditional Richter scale measure would show most major earthquakes smaller than they really are, although in some cases Ms (surface wave measure) would turn out sometimes higher than actual Mw measure.
