  • Yiks! I would never do this!

  • Do you know whether the age of 21 is the same in the UK? Because I heard it was 25? Thanx

  • @xoluvurselfxo I would think that the sooner you do it in your 20's the better. Again, just so they can see what is normal for you and compare that to future results. Holly

  • About a week before my period I get intense lower back pain, and most recently it's been so bad that it keeps me up at night and makes me miserable. I have not seen a gynocologist yet, and I am sexually active. Would you suggest that something may be wrong? Or is this normal for some people?

  • @DanielleCope Sounds like it is hormonal. I really think if you are sexually active you should see a gyn. I don't think the back pain is a sign of problems, but having a healthy check with the gyn and discussing this will give you some peace, and maybe a solution. Then if other problems arise you will have a relationship with your doctor and that will make it easier to have future conversations. Holly

  • what if y period is always lite and i had it for 3 years and it reguler and i missed 5 periods in a roww

  • ooooh, this didn't help me too much, haha i want to go even LESS now! they aren't necessary tests btw, just so everyone knows. there's no reason to go unless you feel discomfort or have symptoms of something "bad", you can examine for lumps or bumps in your vagina yourself, and if you even THINK there might be something, then go. btw, most gyno's are female, and you can always ask for a female.

  • By sexualy active, what do they mean? If you were raped by the same gender when you were young does that count? Does the doctor have to tell your mom if she knows but doesnt talk about it if you dont want them to??

  • @greenmusicgirl101 The doctor can't really know if you were ever sexually active. The hymen can break for lots of reasons (Riding horses, bad falls, etc...). If the doctor suspects anything...it is far more likely in the U.S.A. that he will ask to be alone with you to talk. I want to reassure you that you are a virgin for as long as it takes for YOU to decide to have sex with someone. Rape is a violent act and in my book can NEVER take a girl's virginity. Holly

  • * i meant really irregular periods, not visits sorry. thanks, Awebear<3

  • im 16, really irregular visits, its november 19th and my last period was the first weet of september. ive had my period for likw 3 yrs and in the beginning my period was fine, but its been getting more and more iregular. ive never had sex so im not bregnat btw. my nurse from the doctors called and left a message to call the doctor, and my mom said it might be for a gyn visit so i was worried and looked it up here. thanks so much, i really appreciate you guys doing this vid. thanks, Awebear<3

  • @AutumnAweBear Smart to get it checked out for sure. Probably nothing...but putting your mind at ease is always a good thing. Some women have irregular period their whole life. Doesn't mean anything is wrong with you, just harder to plan for them. We really need to redo this video it is so choppy and horrible quality. It is on my list of projects. Holly

  • what about shaving? like isnt that the worst part? how can we prepare? like be clean

  • @shellyandbri09 A shower before you go is really good enough. Holly:)

  • all i can say is thank you for doing this video i'm 20 and start going next year but this vid definitely helps out a lot

  • @benbarnes89 So sweet. I just went last week and had the best appt. ever. Done in 5 minutes and painless. It feels emotionally like a big deal, but really it is not bad...and can even be easy. Holly

  • I'm 16. I've had my period for 5 and a half years and had trouble ever since. I'm going to the doc tomorrow for my first visit. Both of you made me a little more comfortable. Do they have you sit up for the pap or lying on your back?

  • @Doodlebuggie95 You are on your back on an examination table. Your feet are in stirrups at the edge of the table with your knees bent. It really will be just fine. Holly

  • how old should you be recomended for the first vist?

  • @TheCandycaneable Go to the gyn if you are having any issues with your period or have a concern with your female organs. Or, if you are sexually active. There is no official age though. Holly

  • Make sure its gloved hahahahahahahahaha

  • I've never had the exam, does it hurt the first time?

  • @cannibalisticyoyo No it doesn't hurt. It isn't something you've done before so it will be strange and perhaps a little uncomfortable. But, most women would agree that it isn't painful. Holly

  • I don't know what i'm meant to do in the UK ... I don't even think there's pap tests until your 25.

  • @Twilight19922008 A simple call to your normal doctor to ask when they recommend going to a gyn will help you with that question. If you aren't sexually active or planning on going on birth control, then it probably shouldn't be a concern for you right now. Holly

  • @Twilight19922008 25 is too late !!! o_o !! my mom had weird cervix cells at 17 ans she could have die if she didn't pass the test !

  • I'm so scared to go....I have generalized anxiety and everything, while im not going to be going soon, im still really scared about already...

  • @kitanasbeauty Don't be scared; nobody "has to go" :)

  • In the United States, cervical cancer incidence and mortality rates have declined dramatically with the use of Pap test screening and treatment of preinvasive disease. In a 2001 study, an encouraging 88.3% of women aged 18-44 years reported having had a Pap test in the past 3 years.

Our hosts are spending their time to educate and explain (and remove the fear and mystery) about a simple cancer screening procedure.

  • I do not feel or have any emotions about a cancer screening. Polio vaccine prevents polio, that is a fact, pap smears detect abnormal cells that can lead to cervical cancer. That is a fact. The practice of medicine is based on evidence and studies and not emotions. Routine colonoscopies are reccomended for anyone turning 50. This is a screening test for colon cancer and its effectiveness is based on trials and studies and not feelings. Best of Luck.

  • Another thing to consider is that sometimes doing anything you haven't done before can make you afraid. There is a good reason why we have gynocologists. They are necessary, and the exams have helped a tremendous amount of women. You can try to be healthy on your own, I certainly was, but no amount of trying would have kept me from developing cervical cancer or cured it. I was young, had no symptoms, very healthy. Luckily for me and my family a gyn found it and cured me. Holly

  • @lifelaughlatte I'm glad you had an experience that worked for you, but for a lot of people, there is NOTHING that will make this feel right, and we need to not have guilt and shame dumped on us for that. Why would you think that something that feels BAD the first time will feel better the MORE times you do it? And teenage girls have a lot of normal changes in their breasts and cervical cells, which can lead to false results, more testing and fear.

  • I will get back to you about the stats; some people in my support group carry the printouts to doctor's appointments to show them if they start harrassing them to get exams they don't want. And sure, the treatments are traumatic, that is why we would avoid them too. I am perfectly happy with "the consequences of my decision"; I am a healthy fortysomething with four kids, no exams :) It's an individual choice.

  • Mickeymouser,

Because it is the practice of medicine. Pelvic exams are needed to obtain a pap smear, that helps prevent cancer. Cancer kills people in a horible painful way. People get into medicine to help people and not because they are horny pervs. To the men and women that do this everyday It is about as wierd as treating a gun shot wound.

  • @1dirkmanchest To the doctor, maybe, but not all of us are comfortable with these kinds of exams, and you are only justifying how the doctor feels about it! There are other ways of keeping oneself healthy, and these cancers are much more rare than doctors would have us believe. Sometimes the emotional trauma is not worth the small risk, although I respect that some girls/women prefer to have the exams for their own reasons.

  • @Jojoseahorse

I stated that the pap smear helps to prevent cancer. The test alone is a screening tool to help screen for cancer.

There is also a recent vaccine that shows promise. And if you think exams are traumatic, then you should avoid them. But be prepared for the consequences of your decision. Surgeries, radiation and chemo are far more traumatic. HPV leads to cervical cancer, that is fact. Please supply data on how small this risk is. Please include info on oral HPV lesions.

  • @1dirkmanchest Rate of cervical cancer in USA in 2008; 5.7 out of 100.000. Rate of death from cervical cancer in same year; 1.7 out of 100.000. Pretty low :)

  • Also, pap smears do not "prevent" cancer, any more than mammograms do! If that were the case, no-one would get cancer if they had those tests. They only find changes that are already there, and that would not necessarily turn into cancer. Some doctors are very misleading.

  • @Lifelaughlatte thx and I'm glad you have a very happy life with 3 children who I'm sure are beautiful

  • Hi Mickeymouselover - I can't say anyone looks forward to their gyn visit but they are absolutely necessary for girls that are sexually active or think they might have a problem. Thank goodness we have doctors that make this their specialty. I for one would not have had my 3 beautiful children had it not been for an excellent gyn finding a problem I didn't know that I had. So, don't be afraid of your first gyn visit.

  • Why exactly do women have to do this I mean who really besides horny pervs want somebody to be to touch you in some of your most privet spots I mean that means that that person will see all of your matured body for the first time and frankly that is just discusting

  • Nope...no blood tests. In rare instances they might want to check your hormone levels...say if you are pregnant...for that they draw blood. But, not on routine gyn visits.

  • do they draw your blood?

  • I really dont want to go to a gyn appointment cause im really shy when it comes to showing my body!!!!

  • The disgust on my boyfriends face before I leave the house to go, the paper gown and the stirrups... always make me feel like a princess.

  • you guys must be awesome moms. kudos :)

  • admit your girls like it
