  • to bad this caliber is so exotic and expensive :-(

  • Not bad at all, but requires more evidence in more scenarios. Seems doable at longer distances, but at close range, you're more apt to go through your target...that's scary, if it's a person! Where do you draw the line. I think I'd rather jump up in caliber for the knock down power then penetration. I'm wondering about the the 38 Special or 40 S&W, usng hallow points?

    Best regards

  • @1LonePuma The deeper penetration in this test is the result of denim tnoutdoors9 uses in his videos; usually adds 2 or 4 inches of penetration, or just clogs the hp so it passes completely through. And this specific Speer cartridge tends to penetrate deeper than other 357sig rounds, because of the shallow hp cavity and design.

  • The extreme velocity gives the 357sig it's effectiveness, allows for less penetration in soft tissue, and better penetration through intermediate barriers & bone, and tends to overcome any hollow point clogging tendencies you see in other calibers.

At longer distances, the velocity would drop, and the bullet would penetrate deeper in tissue.

Most other 357sig hp's penetrate 8-12 inches in bare gelatin. Some of them fragment in the body, which is a good thing, imo. :D

  • @ftxpanding: Exactly, I think you just made my point. Penetration is a good thing, but only to a point. If it exceeds that point, an innocent bystander may become injured, if I understood your answer correctly. I'm not sure if the specific gel used is used to simulate human tissue, but current laws would say, if you injure or accidentally kill someone as your bullet passes the assailant, you'll be charged with 2nd degree murder. We must all consider these consequences.

    Best regards

  • @1LonePuma Those who carry have to consider liabilities. Imo, 10-12" of penetration in gelatin is enough for most concealed carry encounters. (but even those could over-penetrate) Some guys want 14" and higher, carrying heavy-for-caliber loads.

I think tnoutdoors9 calibrates his test media to ballistic gelatin.

    But I believe there's more risk of over-pen. w/the 165 & 180 grain 40, & 158 grain 38sp than most 357sig. Besides the other benefits I mentioned, the Sig leaves a nice wound.

  • @ftxpanding: I reckon so. Maybe that's why we carry the .380's. With the right ammo, their more then enough. Bigger calibers--we know what their capable of.

    (Though and Through Another, Woops!)

    Best regards

  • Hey when are you going to give in and buy a 357 revolver and compare 10mm and 357?

  • you have a damn good channel man !

  • I wish they would make a carbine in ..357 sig (IE something like a Marlin camp carbine or AR carbine).

This is one round that would benefit from a longer barrel.

  • its a shame that .357 sig ammo is so dam expensive and hard to find but, this may be my next purchase for a ccw caliber gun. to compliment my .45 acp.

i like to have choices :) its been said by some that with all these edc videos a guy who has a dedicated edc load out is like a woman picking out her out fits in the morning lol.

i can see myself now standing in front of my safe in the morning like which do i want to carry today then onto the knives and lights.

  • That ballistics gel looks delicious.

  • where can i buy a g31 or a g32 at?

  • @GODS17ngi75WARRIOR

A gun store, they can order it directly from Glock for you.

  • LOL

  • @ jadx21- The sig rounds fit in the .40 mags

  • Is the bulett made of gold?

  • @TrollingSux Yes, it's made of gold. The DOT indicates that the Department of Transportation approves of the handling of the gold.

  • @aluisious There is no stupid question, maybe you should have legitimately answered @TrollingSux question.

  • great reveiw !! very professional !! thanks !!

  • The duty version of this ammo is 25ftps faster and opens up slower, The duty bullet has 6 sections in the hollow point and a thicker jacket while the personal protection has 5 sections and a thinner jacket. I recommend the Duty version because it is better at defeating barriers.

  • This is one of the best terminal ballistics tests I've seen on YouTube!

  • Excellent review!

  • gold dot will never fail us.

  • I carry glock 23 gen4 with 357 sig barrel

  • @4everInaDay520 do you have to use glock m ags for the sig or just pute them in the .40 cal mags?

  • I carry a glock 23 with 180 grain federal hst. I was thinking about getting a barrel to carry and shoot a 357 sig. I am not sure if its a good carry round. I worry about overpenatration. What do you think?

  • Is it possible to shoot a .357 sig round through a glock 22 or glock 23?

  • @bulltastik Yes change the barrels

  • how does the shoot-ability of this load compare to the Hornady 357 sig you tested? (you mentioned that the hornady felt like a 9mm, but still out performed) Also, bring us a 147gr 357sig test! keep up the good work!

  • @KurtP00

The Gold Dot has more felt recoil, but I could probably say that about the Gold Dot vs. Hornady in any caliber based on my experience. I I consistently clock a wider gap between advertised and actual velocities with all Hornady ammo, all calibers. 147 Hornady, the only factory 147 load I can find in .357 SIG, should be tested in December. I'm very curious about that one myself.

  • I can't speak more highly of the gold dot. I have tested a lot of ammo in reloading for handgun hunting and it has turned into a "does this come close to the gold dot?" question. I handgun hunt Javelina with a 357 mag with a 6" barrel loaded with Win 296 and Everything I shoot at makes awesome "VERY" (your words lol) symmetrical expansion through everything I shoot them into. Very impressed, wished they were more available than they are here in Tucson.

  • Dear tnoutdoors9

I would be interested in seeing ballistic tests for the .327 magnum. I would be willing to donate the funds for a box.

  • sadly this ammo is not legal in my country :(

  • @4Methylendioxy Leave your country and come here. We could use your help to fight the asshats trying to make them illegal here too. Much love from the US.

  • @arizonaafield i would love to but i went to a top university for 600 bugs/per year and have full health insurance for free. don't think thats possible in the u.u. =(

  • @4Methylendioxy u pay for it with taxes. it isn't free

  • @jadx21 i just pay sales tax and nothing else, so its nearly for free :D

  • @4Methylendioxy i mean the insurance isnt free not the university. the taxes you pay arnt sales tax on it, its whatever it takes to cover the cost of your country. it is cheaper because your docters arnt making as much as ours but your still paying for it.

  • Comment removed

  • @4Methylendioxy they dont mae the same the UK median salary is less then the USA our docters are paid more. thats why docters want to go to the US because they make more. i may not know anything about ur back asswords land but you know nothing ofmine as well. all i know is nothing is free. sombody has to pay for it.

  • @tthomp57

I'm trying to confirm that BB is indeed loading Gold Dots. Hard to tell from the photo on their website. After browsing various forums tonight, I think their availability of having Gold Dots to load is hit or miss.

  • Comment removed

  • Please test the 54234 load when you have a chance. I would be interested to see the differences (if any).

  • @RMGoogle I'd like to see it too!

  • Good test. I definitely do not want to be on the wrong end of one of those puppies. I think if .357 Sig practice / plinking ammo were as available and as "inexpensive" as 9mm or .40, more folks would give it serious consideration.

  • @hickok45 agreed. It seems as if the .357 SIG is gaining a good reputation as a "fight stopper" among agencies who use it. But I've never found FMJ for less than ~$.35/round, so it's just too expensive (for me) to shoot as much as I do 9mm.

  • Hm... Do you have any gun calibrated in 7.62x25? if so, PLEASE do a video on it, including penetration tests. Thanks!

  • @Dragunov1185

Sorry, nothing in 7.62 x 25 and no plans to go that direction.

  • @tnoutdoors9 Awh! Why not? :(

I bought my Tokarev TT for 280$, if you're talking about price. The ammo can get a little expensive, it's a really fun caliber.

  • Another great vid !!!

    Thanks

  • I've been waiting a long time for this vid and finally came, i refused to see anyone else's video's....TNOUTDOORS you are the man and thank you very much for finally uploading this vid your video's are by far the best. This is by far my most favorite round and will get another G32 for my carry to replace my G19C the .357sig is one of the best self defense round money can buy!!!

  • Federal guard dog!

  • @jopoy456

9mm FGD video is in production; up by Oct. 1 if all goes well.

  • @tnoutdoors9 Sweet! Can't wait!

  • @jopoy456 Sucks unless your gun can't feed HP reliably!

  • 9MM ON STEROIDS....

  • @Blk05titan26 I would say Crank... cause it's not any bigger... just a lot more energy :P

  • Thank You for the test.

You may know this already but.... The 23918 in this test is one of the versions of Gold Dot Speer offers. The bullet in this test is a 5 petal 125gr. GD @ 1350fps. This round is Speers lower penetration .357sig round which is more for shorter barrels.

Speer also offers a 54234 .357sig round which is still 125gr. but uses a 6 petal GD bullet @ 1375fps. This 6 petal bullet is known to give deeper penetration. If you could test the 54234 round also that would be great.

  • Thanks for that, good to finally see some decent .357sig testing on here. Obviously I have my own opinion, but I wondered, do you thing the extra 35 ft.lb of energy is worth loosing the expansion, since most .40 are expanding to the high .70's?

  • @gilgamesh8717

You have isolated one of the criteria of choosing between .357 SIG and .40, a factor that I am evaluating as well. I would tend to favor deeper penetration, if proven in the .40, vs. the additional energy acquired in .357 SIG. Additional testing will help myself and I'm sure others.

  • @tnoutdoors9

From your test of the 180gr .40 the penetration was ~13.625" w/ expansion of ~.684", this .357 Sig round is only 125gr & achieved ~14.5" of penetration w/ expansion of ~.572". I'll take proven better ability to handle intermediate barriers, deeper penetration & increased tissue damage over ~1/10" increased expansion but less penetration, less tissue damage & less ability to deal w/ intermediate barriers any day. 147gr test will be good, but not bonded = not good @ these energies.

  • Excellent video and info!

I do have a question; not being a Glock owner, I have heard that you can change the caliber of a Glock 9mm, .357 sig & 40 S&W with just the change of the barrel & magazine and that's all. Is this true?

  • @ristin59 its not just Glocks you can do this with its most pistols. You can only swap .357 for .40 and vice versa or you can buy an after market barrel to go down to 9mm. You can not change up from 9mm to .357 or .40.

  • @gilgamesh8717 Thanks for the info!

  • Sir thanks for the vid testing the Sig .357; however is it possible for you to do a vid comparing the .40 Speer Gold Dot with the same brand in .357. I am in a quandary as to whether to get a Glock in .40 or .357. the .40 having the advantage of being more available and less expensive. Would really like to see how they perform through barriers. By the way u go by the name Trout are you a fisher of fish or a fisher of men?

  • @ross512009

Check the .40 Ammo Test playlist for the 180 gr Gold Dot video. Yes, the .40 is infinitely more available and cost a little less, and that alone might sway people toward that caliber.

  • @tnoutdoors9 Doctor ;)

  • @ross512009 I'd try and get a glock in .357 or .40 for the cheapest price you can find, and then get a conversion barrel for the opposite caliber. I do believe the magazines are interchangeable since the .357 sig is just a necked down .40 S&W but i'm not 100% on that

  • @fomocowboy yes, they are. With a Glock 23, you can get barrels and run .40, 9mm, or .357 SIG all from the same handgun. Very cool stuff.

  • @roentgen571 Agreed. MY Glock 31 (357SIG) has a .40 cal barrel and 9 mm Bull Barrel so in effect I have a Glock 31, Glock 22 and Glock 17 capabilities in one handgun.

  • @fomocowboy Same magazine fits both. I have a Glock 31 that uses 357SIG magazines and Glock .40 cal magazines interchangeable. Does not matter if I load 357SIG for .40 caliber in either magazine. I do have the .40 cal barrel - no problems with either magazine.

  • @frankgon4 I figured they were, thanks for the clarification.

  • Do you think you could ever test the 410 shot shell personal defence ammo made for the Taurus Judge. Federal 4 pellet 000 buck and the Winchester PDX1. Very interested in what effects this ammo would have in the SIM-TEST. Thank You in advance.

  • Great video. The .357 Sig is truely a great round. Great start to a great review.

  • Excellent. Thanks for the review, I'm getting a G31 and this information helps a lot. How much does the box cost? Thanks again!

  • Comment removed

  • i think many people dont take in consideration that energy transfer is a big deal. like you said. a bullet that has 400 foot pounds and travels 12 inches has actually deposited more energy than a bullet with 400 foot pounds that travels 16 inches. this can be the cause of many factors such as the speed of bullet expansion, the finished (expanded) diam. or the time spent in maximum expansion (before over curl begins). just a note to prove your theory :)

  • I have heard about that shooting a 357mag from a short barrel yields velocities comparable to a 38sp. Do you think that maybe you could do a comparison with 38sp, 38sp +P, and 357mag? Even if it was with plinking ammo I would like to see how much barrel length affects velocity and just how comparable a 38 is to a 357. thanks

  • @MrKozbor

I will probably add a .357 Mag to the collection early 2012, then I can post those types of comparisons.

  • @tnoutdoors9

wow spending ur own money on guns you'll probably only use for youtube ammo tests that's cool don't know about anyone else but i for one like what you're doing for your viewers

  • @tubevideoguy762

Thanks. In that sense I prefer to remain independent. It gives me the ability to do what I want, when I want, and how I want. All with the viewer in mind, void of corporate guidelines. I am the CEO here, LOL!

  • Just alittle info ... I contacted hornady and they are developing a 357sig round in the critical defense

  • lol i think i already know the answer to this but will you ever test a 12 gauge slug?

  • @Glockcrazy19

Only if I have 3 feet of this test media!

  • Comment removed

  • can you possibly do rifle calibers for a ballistics test

  • Cool stuff TN, you continue to set the benchmark for ammo tests on the net.

  • sorry just saw the hornady tap test but any other 40 ammo in the future

  • any possibility of testing some hornady tap rounds in the .40 cal

  • goodness! whatta great vid! TNO9 always comes through, but this round tested here proved so great that it just made the vid a whole lot better! The whale blubber comment was hilarious. And I haven't seen such uniform expansion in a round since the black talon tests (all without the little talon spikes of course). I'm gonna seriously look into this round for EDC thanks to this test. I miss TNO9's vids of the zombie santa and the special agent costumes shooting a whole lot of rounds.

  • Great review

  • OUTSTANDING effort !!! great info...THANKS

  • Outstanding. 14 inches of penetration. 4 to 7 inches of cavitation. Turns into a 0.57 caliber. I recently purchased Glock 31 (4.49 inch barrel) and have been waiting for this video. I am convinced now to purchase a 6 inch barrel for my Glock 31. Many Thanks for this long awaited video.

  • @frankgon4 A six-inch barrel on the Glock 31 is a great idea. I'm always amazed at how much velocity you can pick up with just a slightly longer barrel...especially with any cartridge launching a fast 9mm projectile. I bet you'll break 1400 FPS with defense loads.

  • wow... Another winner for Speer Gold Dot.

  • Thank you for the best ammo reviews on you tube...

  • ★★★★★

  • Cool round, alot of power in a small package, makes for a good carry gun. ****

  • Really like your testing. Very accurate.

  • Damn YouTube I missed this in my sub box

  • You media-tested my primary carry load; thank you. I did some static barrier testing with .357sig, 9mm, 40s&w,and 45acp; used some approx 1/8th inch steel with jacketed solids (standard strength loads). The sig was the only one to penetrate (the 45 blew it out of its moorings though). The sig round is very good at that (it's much like the 125g 357mag loads). Of course the stronger 357mag, 10mm, and 44mags, I tested blew it away... but they are much bigger and recoiling guns. Anyway... thanks.

  • i would like to thank you very much for starting 357 sig id like to point out that this is the lower power version of the gold dot round and i think it would be great if you would test out the full power round as well # 54234

  • Very cool! Assuming all other factors held the same (ammo capacity, recoil management, etc) and going off pure ballistics, would you go with 9mm, .357sig, .40s&w, or .45acp?

And any chance you'd test Hornady 124gr XTPs in .357sig? :)

  • @JAndersonIV

All of those you mentioned are fine. I currently carry 9mm but could likely to go .40 or .357 SIG.

I have in the house for testing both the Hornady 124 and 147 in .357 SIG. I'm really interested in the 147 myself.

  • Your videos are just always awesome...keep it up !

  • Good old Gold Dot's....nice test again!

  • It would be interesting to see this compared to .357 Magnum at some point in the future. .357 Magnum has always been considered a proven defensive round, and this is supposed to be it's automatic equivalent. I'm curious how good of a job it actually does at replicating the .357 Mag's ballistics.

  • @wcropp1 Also, I forgot to mention, the Gold Dot seems to be a pretty darn consistent thus far, expanding even when plugged with denim, etc. Thanks for these interesting and informative videos--great job.

  • I have considered 357Sig but I think between 9mm and 45ACP I have it well enough covered. If I wanted something faster I'd go 10mm. That being said it's always interesting so see how different loads compared. Thanks for do the test.

  • I will like to see a media test on the PDX1 9mm 124g +p. You have one but it was with water and it fail. I will like to see a retest! Thanks for all the great education!

  • Seriously, can you do a better review? Great job again.

Looking forward again to your tactical wheel barrel.

  • Very nice, one of my carry guns is the .357 sig in a G32 as well. It is also loaded with the gold dots, they seem to be a great bullet, your videos back that up perfectly. Thank you for everything your doing. I have subscribed to all your videos for some time now.

  • 22 lr test please

  • @jimbarbwe1985

There will be more .22 LR tests once the temp drops here and I make some smaller blocks for just that purpose. We continue to have too many days in the mid 80's or higher; the block will go soft and begin to melt above a certain temp. I have considered adding a .22 LR handgun, but I would do that only if a large majority of people confirmed they use .22 LR for carry. I don't see that. Otherwise, tests will be with the 10/22 from a small game hunting perspective.

  • Fantastic ballistics test. My first thoughts were that it was going to go all the thru the SIMM test and would not expand. However, much to my surprise it did stop in the SIMM test and the expansion looked great. I need to see if my local gun store has a Glock 32 in their selection of test guns. I wish I would have thought about that today while I was there testing a Glock 20 10mm. Keep up the awesome ballistics test.

  • Excellent test of the .357 sig.

  • In my opinion, this series of videos are some of best and most educational, here on Youtube.

  • I just attended an ammo company demo for law enforcement. They utilized ballistic jello and advised that the first 4 inches of penetration were equal to a bullet passing thru skin; therefore when considering penetration, they subtracted the four inches. I have not seen this before. Reference your ballistic media, is there any subtraction consideration for skin?

  • @bwtmlt

I do not subtract anything for that obvious aspect, nor have I heard of that calculation used in ballistic testing. Can you give us the name of the ammo company?

  • finally some real test data on .357 sig !!! thank you

  • Okay. I finally have to ask. Why have multiple layers of denim? People don't usually wear 4 layers of denim. What am I missing?

  • @rmordica

If you ever visited Dollywood in East Tennessee, you would see alot of people wearing 4 layers of denim.

For ammo testing this is an IWBA standard; simulates heavy clothing or possible worse-case scenario. Run a Google search on IWBA, as I'm not able to post a link in the comments area. Just to appease alot of folks, I will in the future run a test or two using a cotton t-shirt or sweatshirt.

  • @tnoutdoors9 lol. I've been to Dollywood. Saw a bluegrass concert and rode the water ride twice. It's a very interesting place!

  • Another great test.

  • I use this load in a SIG 229R, I love this load and the platform I use. There are numerous agencies that use this caliber and this specific load. Texas DPS, Texas DCJ, Federal Air Marshals and the U.S. Secret Service. This is by far the most accurate caliber I have ever shot as well. If ya'll choose this caliber you won't be let down.

  • Informative video testing as always...any future plans to gelatin test 5.56 and 7.62 rounds? I'd be happy to forward some samples...

  • @BountyXP

I do want to test .5.56 but it has to be a clear block. It's not worth the effort to test rifle ammo in blocks where I can't see anything. .308/7.62 would be way down the road, as I would need to purchase a rifle. Actually, I would lean toward a Remington 700 and let someone else do the 7.62 testing, I would focus on .308 .

  • @tnoutdoors9 Well, if you decide to do it I can supply you with loads for the 5.56 and perhaps a rifle for the 7.62 as well.

  • Very interesting! Nice video.

  • That 5 shot average is not that far off from Advertised, that's why I prefer Speer Gold Dot, it's a round I have yet to see fail, and almost all of the Speer Gold Dot is not to far off Advertised, good test as always

  • That's the test I've been waiting for! The LE version is a little hotter, coming in just under 1400 fps from my model 32. The lot # is 54234. It's available from Matre Arms and Ammunition in Seven Mile, Ohio. I bought from them for many years before retiring from law enforcement. 513-726-5164. Last I checked it was $27/box of 50. BTW, your test methodology is excellent, consistent and relevant. You may consider it amature, but frankly it is quite professional. Thank you.

  • expensive

  • Great test tnoutdoors9. Would it be possible to fire more than one round in the testmedia? According to Dr.M.Fackler shooting a block multible times is ok as long as the bulletpath is not overlapping. BTW Speer made several bullets for the .357 sig both in five and six padel designs. Apperently they have now settled on two: 3918 and 4234. Your 23918 is the non LE 20 round box with the first number being boxsize and the shorter penetrating five pedal bullet at nominal 1350fps.

  • @MADCATMR308762

I am familiar with Dr. Fackler's work. I'm not willing to attempt a second shot. If the first track is affected in any manner, everything is invalidated. These tracks are usually pretty straight, but at times I also see the bullet making a turn up or down toward the end of the path. If the blocks were wider, I would give it more consideration. When each test requires 10-12 hours to produce, I'm not willing to take that risk.

  • @tnoutdoors9

No problem. I know that those tests are very time consuming and make a lot of work. Your effords are highly appreciated and are the most professional test the a private person has put on the internet up to date.

  • Great ammo videos. I'm a fan.

  • WIT CAMERA R YOU UES E MILL THE CAMERA NAME

  • Do you have any 10mm ammo tests on video?

  • @CD318

Nothing on 10mm. However, I am considering that down the road, mid-2012 at the earliest.

  • @tnoutdoors9 Why don't you just borrow a Glock 20 from your friend hickok45. Problem Solved! :)

  • @tnoutdoors9 Good idea.. =))

  • Excellent vid as always!

  • I underestimated this caliber.

  • I've owned the G32 for about 3 years now and it's still my favorite to carry. Thank you for being one the few respectable gun reviewers on youtube to demonstrate the this great pistol and cartridge.

  • another great review

  • Does Winchester make a pdx 357 sig? That is what I want to see.

  • @Doc6mm

Yes, Winchester makes the PDX in .357 SIG and I have a box in the house for testing.

  • If a wounded bad guy decides against going to a ER or Dr. that denim in there will cause a nice infection. Thumbs up.

  • Man, Speer ALWAYS expand, this thing plugged and still expanded perfectly.......no wonder so many people carry these....

  • Awesome!

  • even with the denim plug it still worked..others failed when the denim plugged the hollow point..id say this round works..

  • A very impressive cartridge . Great vid

  • Sub box is still broken...

  • @tnoutdoors9 Just out of curiosity. What camera are you using?

  • @QuattroStig its in the description section

    CAMERA: Sony HDR-CX560, 60p, 28 mbps, 1920 x 1080 HD.

  • @wisechineseguy You really are wise :)

  • @tnoutdoors9 Keep up the good work. I watch more of your videos than any other channel I am subscribed to.
