i have watched vids that fitted the player up until 8/4/11 ,but after that day alot of vids now wont fit .and its nothing to do with what ive uploaded .this is vids in my favorites ..can you tell me what this is or what i have done wrong?
The problem occurs with cameras that shoot in 720x480. YouTube doesn't recognize it as full widescreen and encodes it in 4:3. So you have two choices. Export at 854x480 which is what YouTube prefers for 480p. Or export a 640x360 which is standard YouTube widescreen.
See, people think widescreen is usually higher resolution than a squarer monitor, when in fact, when comparing a traditional 1280x1024 monitor to a 720p screen, you'll find that 1280x720 is pretty much a 1280x1024(square) monitor with the top and bottom cut off, so you get the raw end of the deal. Too Bad.
2BunnyReturns - No, I don't think people think that at all. Resolution, and aspect ratio are two entirely different things.
Widescreen, as an aspect ratio is larger than a regular 4:3 ratio. If you happen to be stuck with some old and busted 4:3 monitor... well, that would be the "too bad".
2BunnyReturns - I think the main problem here is that you're applying film principals of video formats to computer monitors - where such things don't matter.
Again, I don't think anyone thinks widescreen is higher resolution than square monitor - everyone KNOWS it's a higher resolution than square film/movies. This is nothing to do with monitors.
See, you're confused again: A screen is a screen regardless of PHYSICAL size or inputs that it has on the back.
A computer monitor and television screen are essentially the same thing. All I am saying is that Widescreen is not necessarily higher resolution than squarer resolutions.
1280X1024 (square computer screen) = 1,310,720
1280X720 (720p "telly" or computer monitor) = 921,600
Is 1.3 Million not larger than .92 Million?
Now, a MOVIE taken on FILM instead of modern standards is different.
2BunnyReturns - I'm not confused... you're creating an issue where one doesn't exist:
If the monitors are of comparable physical sizes - the widescreen monitors will always have more pixels. It's as simple as that. You're literally just arguing that 2 is more than 1. Yeah... we know!
For example, the resolution on one of my monitors is 1920x1200. That's more than 1600x1200... isn't it? Obviously. Again, NO ONE doesn't know this already - you're confusing people's opinions with nonsense
@2BunnyReturns the square of the two might have more pixels but us humans usualy have 2 eyes which means we see in widescreen so the wide picture will actualy be a better quality because it is a more natural shape to focus on than a square. you notice the effect best if you for example try to play a game on a phone like a nokia n95, if you have the game on tall screen you can barely focus and your eyes blur out after a few mins but turn it round to widescreen and its much easier to focus.

@JPizzle1122 jon i film on a 720p hd camera and edit on a monitor that lets me watch 720p videos and i render my videos in 720-30p and when i look back at the footage its all widescreen for my viewer's viewing pleasure is that ok?
@2BunnyReturns compare it to the same VERTICAL resolution you twit, don't compare 1280x1024 to 1280 x720. try 1024x720 to 1280x720. the example you are giving is not valid, but on the slightly right path. In the example you gave, you are right, but would parts of the image get cut off when you go from 1280x1024 to 800x600? no, computers (and TV's) are made to make the image look the same minus the detail, no matter the resolution.
Look, calm down. 1280X720 when compared to 1280X1024 is smaller, "Twirt" ☺.
Give me one good reason that it makes more sense to compare 1280X1024 to 1024X768 than it is to compare 1280X720 to 1280X1024 and I will send you $100 dollars via PayPal to you. YouTube users, are you seeing this here?
When you go from 1280X1024 to 800X600 a LOT gets cut off because its a way smaller resolution.
And that last line, "made to look the same", what a bunch of crap.
@2BunnyReturns do you even have a degree in video? I think not. The comparison you gave is only valid if you kept the vertical resolution to the same. so I will be looking forward to that $100.
I may not have a degree on videos, but it would appear that I know how to use a calculator correctly.
The response I gave is only valid if I kept the vertical resolution the same? Duuuh, but if you can find a time when that isn't the case, I'll give you the hundred.
Sigh, what has YouTube come to? I thought the YT Comment system and new layout were the worst things that happened to the community; apparently, I was wrong.
@2BunnyReturns You're argument is that 2>1. When you compare monitors of different aspect's and the same horizontal resolution the wider monitor is of course going to be shorter. But, if you compare them properly, (that is to say, comparing the vertical resolution), guess what? The 1.33X1 is cut off, and the 1X78:1 is wider! For example: 1920X1080 (1.78X1) 1440X1080 (1.33X1)
That's not how the resolutions are. The only way they could be compared using the vertical resolution was if the vertical resolution was the same (I.E. 1366x768 versus 1024x768), but if you are comparing 1280x1024 to 1280x720, all "720p" is is cut off. See where I'm going? It can be either one, depending on if your monitors in question have a consistent horizontal or vertical resolution.
@2BunnyReturns The thing is that, you're comparing one sidedly and incessantly and it only serves to make yourself look bad. It also doesn't help you that the biggest monitor on the market is widescreen (clocking in at 2560X1600).
Eh, not quite: I'm comparing both horizontally and vertically (unlike what you just wrote), and it only serves to make yourself look bad. It also doesn't help you that the biggest monitor on the market is aspect ratio independent:
Sony G90 CRT Projector. Maximum resolution of 2500x2000 (total of up to 5,000,000 pixels versus your "amazing" 2560x1600, only 4,096,000 - almost a full million less) and a nice 92+" Screen size. Better contrast ratio too.
@2BunnyReturns So, we're talking about CRT projectors now? I thought it was a discussion of how 4:3 monitors were larger than their widescreen counterparts.
BTW the Red Epics kick the ass of Sony G90 which is 28000X9334 (261,352,000). Isn't that just the slightest bit more?
I don't know where you got either of those from. We weren't specifically talking about CRT projectors or about 4:3 monitors being of better resolution than their "widescreen counterparts".
As for your 260 Megapixel monitor being "so great" (I don't own a Sony G90 either, for the record, although I do accept donations ☺), what would you display on that? We hardly have any content bigger than 720p or 1080p.
We're not talking about particular displays, we were talking about resolution. And before you get too wrapped up in talking to yourself about other nonsense, let 2 Bunny lay down the bottom line:
Having a certain aspect ratio does not necessarily automatically guarantee a higher or lower resolution as you seem to think. Any calculator could tell you that.
Sweet, now that we've got that out of the way, would you like to subscribe to my channel? ☺
@2BunnyReturns a wide screen isnt a 4:3 with the top and bottom cut off, its 4:3 with more width (because humans see in widescreen sicne we have 2 eyes so widescreen is more natural and reduces eye strain) 1280x1024 isnt a comparable size to 1280x720, when comparing aspect ratios you go by the smaller of the two numbers so 1280x720(16:9) compares to 960x720(4:3)
Correct, but we are comparing 1280x1024 to 1280x720. In your 1280x720 versus 960x720 example, the vertical resolution is the same, whereas in the example we are actually talking about, it is the horizonal resolution that remains the same. Your eyeballs focus on whatever is in front of them, and you're not seeing any "less resolution" because you're watching a different aspect ratio. To your eyes it doesn't matter; Resolution is Resolution.
on some of your old videos som of the speach bubbles are completly cut off and IDK if you know that or not but if you could try to fix them when and if you have time that would be great but befor this video i always wonedred why that was happaning so thanks.
I was wondering why your loder videos looked like they had black bars all around them, I thought it was some sort of glitch in the system at the time, as I didnt have an account yet.
i actualy like the effect that happens w/ the 4:3 videos because when i watch them on my wii all i have to do is zoom in to get a full screen efect rather than strugling w/ youtube XL or trying to make the full screen work (which it rearly does)
im don't no probably when u r makin a vid the software will have some sorth of agustment if u record with a camera u should check the setting in the box or some shit to see if it recorsds in 16:9 if it says youtube campatable then it should shoot in 16:9
hey try this is yt:stretch=16:9 much easyer then softwear related stuff . all you do is put in the tags box when you editing the description setting etc
ok jon i see what you mean but like some of the other youtubers i havent got the money or credit card to buy softwear online unless you have any good alternetives please let me know ??
Thanks to the codes most of my old videos have now fit the viewer. I usually use the crop code, but for some that have text or important things on the bottom I'll use the stretch code.
I like the new widescreen, and I figure, this is all free shit, so if something is retarded because of the switch, whatever. Free means I put up with stuff. I also has a fast internets
No offense or anything, but if your gonna bag on somebody else you should know that you spelled "comma" wrong, did'nt put an "is" after "there," and the firs sentence doesen't even make any sense!
Well, If you add yt:crop=16:9 as a tag on one of your old videos were there are black bars on the top, bottom and sides of your videos, It'll remove them. Try it out, It worked for me!!
My camcorder can do 4:3 (default) or 16:9, but it's a 4:3 camcorder, so 16:9 looks squished on the camera well before being put on my laptop, so I just use 4:3, plus I like 4:3, cos you don't cut the tops of people's heads off with it unlike with 16:9... :D
That said though, I can convert it all in Adobe Premiere (never use Windows Movie maker (for us Windows PC users) as it screws 16:9 up), if I wanted to... :P
I Dislike it because most of my video's are shot with a unoptional camera or a screen recorder the wide player with black pillars makes it hard to make annitation's point at for example Hq Option.
my videos on my camera have the black bars on the bottom even berfore uploading to youtube then youtube, makes it on the sides why on the bottom????????
It has HD now! It takes twice the video length to load, but there's HD video now! I love the widescreen viewer, and I don't really mind the added letterbox.
i cant seem to get it to work, i captured my videos in 4:3 then stretched them to fill 16:9 but i uploaded and got the bars still, i use premiere pro cs3
I think YouTube just made it widescreen because most tv shows and professional people use fancy expensive hd cameras. YouTube's just trying to make it better for the big companies that go on here.
tehRENEX - I'm not entirely sure what you're trying to say....
All widescreen videos uploaded before a certain date (sometime in Spring, 2008) were NOT corrected to fit the 4:3 box - after this magical date, the videos were.
So my... SIZE is KING! - Lets fill out the part of the screen we can... But I agree that Youtube should add user convertion script / feature so all videos are GOOD!
What about all the frames linking into YT in standard size? .... Widescreen is here to stay!! LETS MILK IT!
personally i dont see why people be hatin on vids that there not interested in.. they say bad stuff and its just cuz they dont have an interest in the vid
but dude
nice vid and my thoughts are widescreen is a little confusing id say but i like that all videos can be hd now :)
Great video, I like the change personally. It takes some getting used to, but most of the videos I watched before now fill out the screen. Which is great.
The bars on the side don't really bother me. Framing is nice.
I like it for most of the stuff that I watch which would include, Is it a good idea to microwave this? Like someone else said, I think they should have added it back in 2006 and given an option for users to watch it in 4:3 or 16:9, kinda like what they do now for low and high-res.
I seriously think (and I have been for more than a year now) that the programmers at YoT should be more careful and actually betatest the new features they put in.
Everytime there's something new, it breaks something else up. Comments still don't work properly, browsing the videos of a user is a pain because there is no way to jump directly to a page (a month ago we could modify the URL; since they went Flash on it, it's not possible anymore).
They should have done widescreen in 2006. They should add some information about uploading widescreen in 16:9 and add a letterbox zoom function like on TV. 640x360 looks better than 320x240 though. But if they do add an HD option, they should add support for any res between 320 and 1080.
Zacheroo - lots of people care, this video was featured, actually.
And COMPLETELY MISSED THE POINT OF THIS VIDEO! Everyone knows the viewer is wider - the point of this video to educate people on the difference between 16:9, and 4:3 letterboxes - and also to inform people that YouTube has actually been in Widescreen for over 8 months now.
Well where you there when they where giving away ipods? Where you there when it wasn't just a white background? You wern't there man, you weren't there.
Personally, I wasn't too happy about the change because 97% of my videos are in 1.33:1 aspect or less. I could not crop the video to meet the new 1.78:1 aspect, so I went out an bought a camera that could shoot in that aspect. Other YouTube users overseas use the 1.60:1 aspect for their aditing, so there will be some slight pillarbox for those videos. There are some other YouTube users that go way beyond and use the theatrical 2.38:1 aspect for their videos which will cause slight letterboxing.
I do watch movies but on a regular sized screen(aka, not widescreen). I dislike wide screen because I feel like I am missing out on the black space on the top and bottom of the screen whenever I watch it. Plus it looks squished in the space.
Javillonaressex - I fail to see how YouTube's new Wider viewer effects your iPod at all.
They adopted Widescreen videos nearly 8 months ago, as I mentioned in the video. You've been able to download videos to your iPod touch (which doesn't even have a 16:9 screen... stupid Apple) since April.
i does not like this cause i makes my computer totally lag and so whenever i watch your vids it skips sooo much so they should have a 4:3 or 16:9 option on the page.
cheeseandpickles666 - I trust you're aware that the video file sizes are exactly the same as before - so the lag you are experiencing is not any different than before they added the 16:9 viewer.
i am so psyched about the whole 16:9 thing. when i make flash videos, i make them in 640x360, which is the exact size of the player! yay! youtube looks amazing now!
also, i noticed that more videos have stereo sound! that's awesome as well. all more steps to the new age of hd.

I think you have misunderstood me here:
What you'll find, is that aspect ratio is independent of resolution.
Example in a common myth: 720p is "higher definition" than a 3:2 aspect ratio square monitor from 2004.
BUSTED.
Multiply it out:
1280X720p=921,600
1280X1024p=1,310,720
921600<1,310,720
720p <1024p
See? Oh, its not an old busted 4:3 monitor at all. Although I've got one of those too...

Yea and i will. But YouTube should return 4:3 player for 4:3 videos, nobody whants black lines.

It's a cool feature, but I think YT should have added an affect that lets your 4:3 videos go widescreen. Like a button you press.
knarfxgamer 3 years ago
knarfxgamer - that doesn't make any sense...
You want YouTube to have an automatic catch-all "crop to 16:9" feature?
That would be more than problematic.

I think YouTube just made it widescreen because most tv shows and professional people use fancy expensive hd cameras. YouTube's just trying to make it better for the big companies that go on here.
nothing 3 years ago
nothing - well, yeah - it was obvious *why* they did it. Still could have used a warning, or some letterboxing zoom options though.
- Jon
JPizzle1122 3 years ago
I uploaded a widescreen video after May 2008, but before this change, and just on high quality (fmt=18), it fulfilled the entire player.
tehRENEX 3 years ago
tehRENEX - I'm not entirely sure what you're trying to say....
All widescreen videos uploaded before a certain date (sometime in Spring, 2008) were NOT corrected to fit the 4:3 box - after this magical date, the videos were.

good video but seriously you need to clean that shit off your face. Looks like you have been eating dirt!!
fleshe 3 years ago
I seriously think (and I have been for more than a year now) that the programmers at YoT should be more careful and actually betatest the new features they put in.
Everytime there's something new, it breaks something else up. Comments still don't work properly, browsing the videos of a user is a pain because there is no way to jump directly to a page (a month ago we could modify the URL; since they went Flash on it, it's not possible anymore).
I feel this WS problem is the least of 'em.
Nanashi85 3 years ago 2

Most people didn't know that.

JBlair1982 3 years ago
hey how do you change the 4:3 to 16:9 if you upload the video 2 months a go

I do watch movies but on a regular sized screen(aka, not widescreen). I dislike wide screen because I feel like I am missing out on the black space on the top and bottom of the screen whenever I watch it. Plus it looks squished in the space.

Javillonaressex 3 years ago
Javillonaressex - I fail to see how YouTube's new Wider viewer effects your iPod at all.
They adopted Widescreen videos nearly 8 months ago, as I mentioned in the video. You've been able to download videos to your iPod touch (which doesn't even have a 16:9 screen... stupid Apple) since April.
JPizzle1122 3 years ago
i does not like this cause i makes my computer totally lag and so whenever i watch your vids it skips sooo much so they should have a 4:3 or 16:9 option on the page.
cheeseandpickles666 3 years ago
cheeseandpickles666 - I trust you're aware that the video file sizes are exactly the same as before - so the lag you are experiencing is not any different than before they added the 16:9 viewer.
So... maybe its time to upgrade your internet?
JPizzle1122 3 years ago

i am so psyched about the whole 16:9 thing. when i make flash videos, i make them in 640x360, which is the exact size of the player! yay! youtube looks amazing now!
